Beer Garden Tour through Germany:
From Munich to Freising and Bamberg

Beer Gardens in Germany

Countless castles and beautiful landscapes make Germany a tourist magnet from one year to the next.

German Beer GardensGermany is home to many different regions, all with unique aspects to their dialect and culture, making the country a very interesting place to visit. Bavarian culture stands out in particular in many ways. The art of beer brewing has been cultivated in Bavaria for more than 3,000 years. Whether you are visiting a small village or a big city, you can sense the lasting effects of the legacy of beer brewing in the state of Bavaria.

There is no better way for a visitor to get to know Munich, than to visit Oktoberfest, the legendary beer festival. On your road trip to Munich you should not, however, forget to visit Freising, as this university town is also home to the Weihenstephan brewery. The perfect end to your trip will be a visit to Bamberg, a town so picturesque one would think it was taken straight out of a fairy tale.

Book your car hire in Germany with Auto Europe and discover all the most legendary brewing metropolises on our beer garden road trip. This road trip through Germany is, of course, also well suited for wine drinkers.

Beer Garden Road Trip Day 1: The Oldest Brewery in the World

Beer Garden Tour Freising

For a grand beer garden tour, you should start where it all began. Freising is not only one of the oldest settlements in Bavaria, but also home to the legendary Weihenstephan brewery. The monks first started brewing beer here in 1040. Today the beer produced in Freising is exported to all different corners of the world, including the UK and USA.

Freising is a great place to visit for its historic brewery and because of its status as a lively student town. The University of Technology has a campus in Freising, and is also educating the next generation of master brewers.

Freising Old TownIn Freising, you can find a vibrant night life scene thanks to the numerous students. There are many popular restaurants, cafes, and bars. Some of the most popular meeting places include B. Abseits, Schneider Weisse, Carlitos and B-Trieb.

There are, of course, many other leisure activities in Freising besides the enjoyment of beer. Take a scenic bicycle tour along the Isar river and take a break at Mühlenpark, a popular beer garden in Garching. After a lovely meal and a refreshing beverage you will pass Domberg on your ride back. This hill's Roman cathedral is worth a visit and home to the Bishop of Freising. You should also take a look inside the impressive library and Diozesanmuseum, which houses a large collection ecclesiastical artefacts and art.

Although Freising is a university town, there is a large number of hotels and other accommodation on offer, all of which are within easy reach with a car hire in Freising. Well-heeled travellers will enjoy a stay at Corbin Feng Shui Business Hotel. Travellers with tighter budgets will, on the other hand, find what they are looking for at Pension Abestal Garni. Or if you feel like you would like to get to know more about Bavarian culture also when it comes to accommodation, we recommend local inns such as Gasthof Schredl, Zum Loewen or Gästehaus Buchner.

Beer Garden Tour GermanyA road trip to Freising will also allow you to try out numerous high calibre restaurants. Especially worth a recommendation is Weissbrau Huber on General-Von-Nagel Straße, Braustüberl Weihenstephan, located directly on Weihenstephaner Berg, and Weihenstephaner am Dom. Of course you can also find many restaurants offering international cuisine in Freising. Great Thai food is on offer at Lucki's, Indian specialities can be enjoyed at Indian Palace, and Trattoria Ca del Bosco dishes up Italian favourites. Lovers of Greek cuisine will find their wishes fulfilled at Irodion.

After you have thoroughly explored historic Freising, take the A92 motorway or Landstraße B11 to Munich. Both routes take 35 to 40 minutes.

Beer Garden Road Trip Day 2 and 3: The Beer Metropolis

Munich Beer Garden Tour

Though beer brewing may have its roots in Freising, Munich is the world's beer metropolis. During the yearly Oktoberfest, Munich's best and most famous breweries offer their creations to thirsty visitors from all over the world in enormous quantities. These last two weeks of September are when the party at Oktoberfest never stops, and also marks the most popular time to visit Munich.

If your plans do not allow you to go on a road trip to Munich in September, there are myriad other ways for you to experience Bavarian hospitality and culture. More than 180 different beer gardens invite you to sit down around a delightful meal and a fresh brew. Some of the most popular beer gardens in Munich are Hirschgarten, the beer garden at the Nymphenburg Castle, Taxisgarten, Augustiner Biergarten, Aumeister and the beer garden at Chinesicher Turm.

Munich is a great place to visit not only because of its beer, but also thanks to its many festivals and tourist attractions. The famous Marienplatz and Rathaus draw many tourists each year. Another tourist magnet is the historic Viktualienmarkt, where you can purchase a vast variety of delicacies from fruit and vegetables to cheese, meat and wine.

With so many opportunities for day trips, made especially easy by using your car hire from Munich, your beer garden road trip in Bavaria will be an experience you will not soon forget. Go on a trip to Neuschwanstein, the castle that inspired the Disney castle, the Alps, or visit Fünfseenland with its pristine lakes. In Munich, you can relax in the Englisher Garten, one of the first inner-city parks in Europe. For a historically significant and more sombre trip, visit the Dachau concentration camp.

Night owls will be thrilled during a visit to Munich. Whether you are heading to Schwabing, Ostbahnhof or the Glockenbachviertel, great clubs and bars await you. But take note: many clubs in Munich hold up high standards at the door. So dress to impress, or at least a little more neatly than you might elsewhere.

Munich Germany Road Trip

Foodies will also not be disappointed during their stay. We recommend avoiding typical tourist restaurants, and rather visiting establishments frequented by locals. You will be able to save on money and patience. Ask for recommendations from Munich residents! No matter what time of year you are visiting Munich, the most important consideration is to make plans in advance. Early booking is absolutely necessary particularly if you are planning on visiting during Oktoberfest. Most hotels will raise their prices and become fully booked early on.

It is a good idea to book early also if you want to visit the other beer festivals in Munich, particularly Frühlingsfest and Starkbierfest. Hotel Uhland has been selected as one of the city's top hotels on various online platforms year after year. The hotel is located close to Theresienwiese, where Oktoberfest takes place. Travellers who are looking for a cosy atmosphere and a reasonable price will find Hotel Laimer Hof Munich well suited. For luxury stays, we recommend Mandarin Oriental Munich or Rocco Forte Charles.

The next stop on our beer garden road trip in Bavaria is Bamberg. After a two-hour drive on the A8 we will reach this picturesque town, located on top of a hill. The drive itself offers visitors beautiful vistas of the Hofoldinger Forst forest and Seehamer See lake, with a view of the Alps as well.

Beer Garden Road Trip Day 4: Bamberg - Bavaria's Northern Treasure

Bamberg Beer Garden Road Trip

On the fourth and final day of our beer garden road trip, you are going to be able to experience the full beauty and diversity of Bamberg. The many traditional Bavarian houses and cobbled streets invite you to stroll through the town.

One of the reasons for ending our road trip in Bamberg is that the town is not overrun by tourists, which will allow you to experience the ambience the same way a local would. Highlights include the Old Town, the old town hall, and the Romanesque cathedral. A great way to spend a relaxing afternoon is to visit Altenburg - wander through the lovely castle grounds and sit down for a wonderful meal at the restaurant.

Beer Garden Tour Bavaria Bamberg

Although Bamberg is not a huge tourist hotspot, the town has some great restaurants for visitors to enjoy. Kachelofen is a particular favourite, as well as the Italian restaurant Fellini Ristorante, or the typically Bavarian Schenkerla. Bamberg also offers, of course, numerous fantastic beer gardens. Some of the most popular include Griefenklai, Spezial-Keller, Bamberger Weissbierhaus and Volspark.

Some great beer gardens are also located a little outside of Bamberg, such as Landgasthofen Heerlien close to Wildensorg and Weierich in Lugbank. With your car hire from Bamberg, you can reach them all with ease.

Bamberg Germany Road TripTourists looking for vibrant night life are unfortunately not going to find what they are hoping for in Bamberg. The town is better suited for a cosy night at a restaurant or bar with friends. If you absolutely want a more lively night out, you can make a spontaneous trip to nearby Hallstadt, where you can visit Pio, a popular party destination among the region's night owls.

In line with our beer garden road trip, we have chosen a fitting hotel recommendation for your stay in Bamberg. Fässla has a brewery, hotel, restaurant and beer garden all under one roof. In 2014 the establishment was awarded a Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor. Another great choice in Bamberg is Barock Hotel am Dom, where old-world elegance is combined with modern amenities. Budget-concious travellers will be able to overnight at an affordable price at Best Western Hotel Bamberg. Furthermore, the location of the hotel is perfect, as you can reach the centre very quickly, and the best breweries are only a short walk away.
