UK Golf Tour Day 1: Aberdeen, Scotland - The Granite City

Golf Road Trip UK Aberdeen Scotland

As your tour begins in Aberdeen, Scotland, opt for a flight to Aberdeen airport (ABZ). In Scotland, there are some of the most famous courses in the world - a perfect start of your trip! Pick up your car hire at Aberdeen Airport and drive directly to your first destination, the Royal Aberdeen Golf Course. There's no better way to start a golf-inspired road trip in Aberdeen than with visiting this famous golf course. Naturally, a car hire in Aberdeen will give you all freedom on the road you can wish for.

Golf Road Trip UK Aberdeen ScotlandYou will pass many interesting sights along the way: The Aberdeen Central Library, St Mark's Church, the Salvation Army Citadel, the Duthie Park or the Johnston Gardens are worth more than a glance. A total of 45 gardens and parks can be found in the city. Equally impressive is the architecture inside and outside the city. Most buildings in the city are made of granite, which is why the city is called the "Granite City". However, all that can wait until you have played at all 18 holes at the Royal Aberdeen Golf Course.

The sixth oldest golf course in the world was founded in 1780 on the North Sea and has been used as a venue for numerous championship tournaments: Scottish Open, the Walker Cup and the Senior British Open, to name just a few. The course is known for its unpredictable wind conditions and tricky greens, especially the last nine holes being among the most challenging in the entire golf world. Complete the game and focus on the sights afterwards: the Gordon Highlanders Museum, Aberdeen Maritime Museum, the fantastic Linn O 'Dee or the breathtaking views from the Bullers of Buchan are not to be missed.

If you want to treat yourself to a cold beer for refreshment after your day on the course, you will find a variety of pubs, bars and various clubs in Aberdeen. The Office Bar is particularly popular and so are The Moorings bar and CASC (Cigars, Ale, Scotch, Coffee) as an excellent choice. Aberdeen also offers an excellent selection of first-class restaurants, many of which offer globally inspired cuisine.

Whether Italian dishes in Mamma Mia, tasty seafood at Moonfish Café or Indian food in Shri Bheemas Indian Restaurant Bridge of Don, Aberdeen offers something for every taste. Before you continue your road trip from Aberdeen, count the impressions of this exciting day at one of the many hotels where you can relax for the next day. Among the most popular tourist attractions there are Britannia Aberdeen, Hilton Aberdeen Treetops and Mercure Aberdeen Ardoe House Hotel & Spa.

UK Golf Tour Day 2: Famous St. Andrews Links

Road Trip UK Golf Tour St Andrews Scotland

The next stop on your trip is the legendary St. Andrews Golf Club at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. Take your car hire from Aberdeen along the A90 and drive to the south. You will drive through the villages of Stonehaven, Laurencekirk, Brechin, Forfar and Dundee. After a two-hour drive along the coast, you will have reached your destination and you'll be ready for the first tee.

Road Trip UK Golf Course St Andrews ScotlandFounded in 1754 St. Andrews Golf Club is officially known as The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, and is one of the oldest and most prestigious club in the world. In fact, the club is often referred to as "the home of golf". The massive clubhouse is nowadays one of the most impressive facilities of the entire golf court. Since the year it was founded, eleven major competitions have been organised here, including the Open Championship, the Walker Cup, the St Andrews Trophy, the Senior British Open Championship and many more. St. Andrews has so much for you to discover: The West Sands is oneof the most beautiful beaches in Scotland and a perfect place to take a relaxing stroll or surf the waves.

The St. Andrews Cathedral, St Andrews Castle and the Museum of the University of St. Andrews allows for interesting and deep insight into the history of the region. As everything revolves around golf during this road trip in the UK, a visit to the British Golf Museum can not be missed. A visit to St. Andrews Aquarium or the Campo Estate Gardens is also worthwhile.

Once you have seen enough of the sights, there is the city's nightlife awaiting. Among the numerous bars and pubs, the Whey Pat Tavern or the Tavern at Strathkinness are a good choice to end the day with a cold beer.

Also cozy: The Jigger Inn or the Road Hole Bar. If you want to spend the night during your road trip in St. Andrews, you will find many wonderful accommodation options throughout the city. For a luxurious stay, book a room at Old Course. For a more relaxed hotel choice, opt for the Rusacks or the Fairmont St Andrews Hotel.

UK Golf Tour Day 3: Championship Course in Gullane

Road Trip UK Golf Course Gullane Scotland

The drive from St. Andrews to Muirfield takes about an hour and 45 minutes on the A92. If your itinerary still allows for a break, we recommend a stopover in Edinburgh. The Muirfield Golf Club is located in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland, overlooking the Firth of Forth. Like the other clubs on your road trip in the UK, Muirfield has been host to important tournaments several times. It was founded in 1891, although the history of the club actually reaches much further into the past. The most interesting fact, however, is that the Open Championship was held right here in 1892 for the first time. Since then, a total of 15 tournaments have been held.

Once you have visited this fantastic place, head to the award-winning beach Gullane Bents to relax and enjoy delicacies of the past while checking out old village shops. If you are up for a more sumptuous meal with a refreshing draft beer, head to the Old Clubhouse. As this small village has limited accommodation capacities, make sure to book a room well in advance. Generously furnished rooms can be found either in Greywalls or Mallard Hotel. Small bed & breakfast inns like the Maple Cottage or Muirfield Green are also a nice place to stay.

UK Golf Tour Day 4: Explore Woodhall Spa

Road Trip UK Golf Woodhall Spa England

The next station of your golf tour is Woodhall Spa Golf Club. Drive your car hire in the UK on the A1 direction south. The route takes, depending on traffic, about five hours and 20 minutes to complete. The city of Leeds is about two hours away and if your itinerary allows, we highly recommend it for a day trip.

Woodhall Spa Golf Club, founded in 1891, is located in the north of Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire. Originally, the club had only one place until the so-called Bracken was designed and built by architect Donald Steel in 1998.

Road Trip UK Golf Course Woodhall Spa EnglandA place you should definitely visit during your stay in Woodhall Spa is the Aqua Sante Spa. After the long trips and the extensive golfing the last few days, you can now truly come to peace with a relaxing muscle massage.

Spend a nice evening at the Kinema in the Woods or the Woodhall Spa Cottage Museum. If you really want to experience something unique, you should plan a trip to Russ Tipper Falconry. Learn from one of the world's leading falconers all about the ancient art of falconry. After the long drive from Muirfield and a day on the course, it is time for a comfortable bed at a pleasant accommodation.

Fortunately,  Woodhall Spa offers a wide range of accommodation to choose from. The Dower House Hotel and the INN at Woodhall heard on hotels with the best reviews. You can also find a whole series of smaller institutions, such as the Rose Cottage B & B, the Village Limits Country Pub, Restaurant & Hotel or the Kirkstead Old Mill Cottage, all of which having an authentic local flair.

UK Golf Tour Day 5 & 6: The Royal Liverpool Golf Club

Road Trip UK Golf Tour Liverpool England

On the fifth day of your golf inspired adventure, the road trip leads you further to Liverpool. If the traffic is low, you need to drive your car hire to Liverpool on the M56 heading west about three and a half hours. Because there is so much to see and experience during a road trip in Liverpool, we recommend a two-day stay.

Liverpool is not only the city where the Beatles were founded, it is also a city with an extremely rich history. For this reason, there are a lot of attractions to visit during your stay. First, of all, however, head to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club for a comfortable round of golf.

GB Golfplatz Tour Liverpool EnglandThe Royal Liverpool Golf Club was established in 1869. The original course was designed by Robert Chambers and George Morris. In the 20th century the club was renovated by none other than Harry Colt. The Amateur Men's Championship has been held at this place since the beginning and the first international match between England and Scotland has also taken place here. The Royal Liverpool Golf Club occupies an honorable place in the history of golf. What we know today as the Walker Cup has also come to being here.

Over the years many important tournaments have been held here. Among them, for example, are the Women's British Open, the Open Championship, the Curtis Cup and many more. Another four miles further, you will find Caldy Golf Club. Although this place does not quite enjoy the popularity of its northern neighbour, connoisseurs consider it equally attractive.

Take advantage of having a car hire in Liverpool to visit a number of interesting attractions. For example, the Casbah Coffee Club, where the Beatles had been premiered in their original band The Quarrymen. In Mendips see the home of the young John Lennon while Paul McCartney grew up in the 20 Forthlin Road. Both places are easily reached with your car rental in Liverpool. If you want to learn more about the history of the city, you should not miss Liverpool Central Library, Liverpool Cathedral and St. Georges Hall in any case.

In addition, Liverpool is one of the best cities for extensive shopping tours. To date, shopping is one of the main attractions for many tourists. The Liverpool ONE is one of the most popular shopping malls across England. Even otherwise, you will find an abundance of shops, markets and shops that offer you every imaginable goods in the whole city. When the day draws to a close, nightlife starts in Liverpool.

In the many bars and nightclubs, which are spread over the entire city, you can turn night into day. The Cavern Club is a must for any Beatles fan and the Berry & Rye provides a more authentic feel. The city also boasts some excellent comedy clubs. The Laughterhouse and Hot Water Comedy Club are especially very popular with locals. As for the choice of restaurants, no wish will remain unfulfilled here. Whether coffee shops, Spanish, Indian or a restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine - in Liverpool you will be spoiled for choice! Of course, you can taste traditional English dishes such as Wellington beef or Shepherd's Pie.

After such an eventful day, spend the night in one of the many hotels which will fit your budget and demands. Quite expensive alternatives are the Scarisbrick or Hillcrest luxury hotels or Radisson Blu and Hope Street. No matter what accommodation you choose, we advise you to book your room in advance. Liverpool is a very popular tourist destination throughout the year, so it can be difficult to spontaneously get a free room.

UK Golf Tour Day 7 & 8: Dublin and Newcastle

UK Road Trip Golf Dublin and Newcastle

To get to the final stop on this golf tour, you must first follow the A55 heading west before you can take the Dun Laoghaire ferry to Dublin in Holy Island. From the port, get on the road N31, R118, R131 and M50 to the city of Dublin. Now you go with your car hire in Dublin on the M1 to Newry and Mourne where you exit the A1 at junction A25 until you arrive in Newcastle. In order to enjoy your road trip in Dublin properly, you should plan two days due to the long drive.

UK Road Trip Golf DublinThe Royal County Down Golf Club is one of the oldest in Ireland. Established in 1889 with two courses, the Annesely Links and the Championship Course. The fourth and ninth hole here are so spectacular that both have been included in the publication "The 500 World's Greatest Golf Holes". Golf Digest awarded the Championship Course the fourth best place in 2005 outside the United States, while in 2007 it moved up all to the first place. Several important tournaments have been organised here since its opening. Among them, for example, are the Irish Open, the Palmer Cup, the Walker Cup, the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship and more.

Newcastle is located at the foot of Slieve Donard. Apart from the golf courses, there are plenty of opportunities to marvel at the sights, go shopping, eating good food or just relax. The location could not be better: you can enjoy the splendour of the Irish coast and the fantastic view of the Mourne Mountains.

Although Dublin is worth a visit in every season, at the end of October, with the Halloween festival, the city is particularly beautiful. Another popular attraction is the Saint Patrick's Stream. According to legend, St. Patrick drove at this location once all snakes from Ireland. An interesting side note: The granite extracted from the Mourne Mountains was used in the construction of the 9/11 Memorial in New York for the foundation.

UK Road Trip Golf NewcastleAccommodation options are plentiful in Newcastle due to strong tourism. Enniskeen Country House Hotel and the Slieve Donard Resort & Spa rate among visitors as their favourites, while Donard Hotel will mark your stay with a historic flair. In Widow's Row, you will find cozy rooms with a wonderful view. Golf Links Hotel is conveniently located near the golf course.

After leaving Newcastle, we recommend you to drive to Belfast Airport. Compared to Dublin Airport which is about two hours away, you will reach Belfast Airport in less than one hour and 20 minutes. There you can also return your car hire from Auto Europe.
