Road Trip on the Norfolk Coast

The Norfolk Coast Path Tour: From Kings Lynn to Mundesly

Road Trip GB - Norfolk Coast Path Tour

The Norfolk Coast Path is one of the most idyllic coastlines in the world with so much to discover...

The Norfolk coast in England is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world and is protected by the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. This classifies the region as an Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB). Therefore, the 280-mile long coastline is one of the most fascinating routes in England, where nature lovers will definitely find what they are looking for.

During your Norfolk Coast Path and Peddars Way Road Trip in the UK, you will have many opportunities to see some of the most beautiful nature reserves of the country, where you can see the black-headed gull, the gray seal, the wheatear, the whinchat and many other native animals in their natural environment. Drive along the Norfolk Coast Path in style with a luxury car hire from Auto Europe.

Norfolk Coast Path Road Trip Day 1: Ancient Architecture in Kings Lynn

Road Trip GB Norfolk Coast Path Tour Kings Lynn England Main

Start your road trip in Kings Lynn, a small village which lies about 107 miles north of London. Despite its small size, there are many attractions here waiting for you. On your further journey through Norfolk there is still so much more to see and discover. While the Kings Lynn Minister (St. Margaret's Church) will give you insight into the royal-Gothic architecture of the region, an equally popular attraction is Oxburgh Hall, which is surrounded by a moat. Nature lovers can spend a wonderful afternoon in Snettisham Park or the Gooderstone Water Gardens & Nature Trails. The Castle Rising is also worth a visit. At the Caithness Crystal Visitor Centre you can marvel at impressive examples of real English glassmaking art. Reach all these highlights comfortably with a car hire in the UK.

UK Norfolk Coast Path Tour Kings Lynn EnglandFeeling peckish? Don't worry! There are a large variety of pubs, bistros and restaurants in the village. Whether at Victory Inn or at Market Bistro, delicious food and excellent beer are served almost everywhere in King's Lynn. We also recommend stopping by at Winch, the Barnfields Café or Lynn café bar restaurant.

Although the city may be abundant with fine restaurants, the same, unfortunately, cannot be said about accommodation. The Best Western Plus Knights Hill, for instance, is one of the few hotels in the city. If you are planning to spend the night here, you should book your room on time.

Norfolk Coast Path Road Trip Day 2: Picturesque beaches in Hunstanton

Road Trip Planner UK Norfolk Coast Path Tour Hunstanton England Main

Exit Kings Lynn and drive with your car hire in England on the A148 northbound until you reach the exit for the A149. Follow this to continue your road trip in Hunstanton. During the ride, you'll first go past Dershingham Bog National Nature Reserve and shortly afterwards you will bypass Dershingham itself. Immediately after Dershingham,  drive through the villages of Ingoldisthorpe and Snettisham. The latter is definitely worth a stop, especially because of St. Mary's Church and the natural reserve RSPB Snettisham, where you can observe a variety of bird species. Take the A149 a little further to reach Heacham. Be sure to make a stop to see the beach and the picturesque lavender gardens.

GB Norfolk Coast Path Tour Hunstanton EnglandAfter another short drive you will reach Hunstanton. The beautiful beach will immediately draw you in. However, if you want to experience the true beauty of the coast, make sure you book a Searles Sea Tour, which takes you to Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary.

But a road trip to Hunstanton has much more to offer than just visiting the city's stunning beach. The Peddars Way takes you, for example, on a plethora of different pathways and walkways to some of the most pristine areas in the countryside. Locals show their talents and skills at the Princess Theatre, so a ticket to an evening performance is a good investment.
With Chives Brasserie, the Coasters Restaurant, and local favourites Steak & Stilton, there are plenty of places to choose from for a nice dining experience.

Although you can accomplish the scenic drive along the coast in about two and a half hours, our tip is to plan for several more days so that you can enjoy every place to the fullest.
If you decide to spend the night in Hunstanton, choose between The Best Western Le Strange Arms Hotel or Richmond House Hotel, both highly regarded. For a more traditional B&B experience, book yourself a room at the Peacock House or the Rose-Fitt House.

Norfolk Coast Path Road Trip Day 3: Brancaster & Burnham Market

Road Trip GB Norfolk Coast Path Tour Brancaster Burnham Market England

On the third day of the Norfolk Coast Path Tour with your car hire in the UK, once again you'll drive down the A149, which leads eastwards along the coast.
You will shortly pass the golf course Hunstanton Golf Links and the small village of Holme-Next-The-Sea located quite close to Holme Dunes National Nature Reserve.
Before your journey leads you further on your road trip to Brancaster, check out the coastal towns Thornham and the RSPB Titchwell Marsh Nature Reserve. The RSPB Titchwell Marsh, as the previously mentioned RSPB Snettisham, is an absolute must for bird watchers!

The Bay of Brancaster should be your first stop once you arrive with your car hire in Brancaster. The seemingly endless beach and the unspoiled countryside are ideal for a picnic, a game of beach volleyball or other activities at the seaside. With a little luck, you will see numerous seals having fun or relaxing on the rocks during a casual stroll. Be careful with the tide: during the low tide the beach may seem huge but as soon as the high tide comes, you will have much less space.

GB Norfolk Coast Path Tour Brancaster Burnham Market EnglandHave a bite at Brancaster Beach kiosk, where you will be offered a wide range of snacks and tasty ice-cream. For a more abundant meal look for the nearby Ship Hotel.

On your way to Burnham Market, drive through Burnham Deepdale and Burnham Norton. The A149 opens at this point into the B1355, which leads you to the heart of Burnham Market, where you can spend the rest of the day.

Upon arrival, check into your hotel and then go on a casual exploration tour through the old picturesque village. The Nelson or Hoste Restaurant both offer lodgings for the night as well as an excellent restaurant. If you are not too hungry, treat yourself to a piece of cake with a cup of tea in Tilly's or the Burnham's Tea Room & Café.

Norfolk Coast Path Road Trip Day 4: Exploring the sea

Road Trip GB Norfolk Coast Path Tour Holkham Bay nach Holt England

On the fourth day of your road trip across the Norfolk coast, you will leave Burnham Market via the B1155 eastbound. Drive until you get to the A149 and continue on until you pass the "The Lake". Turn left at the Lady Ann's Road and follow the road along the coast until you reach Holkham Bay. The landscape here is simply breathtaking and we are sure you'll take many holiday snapshots here. Drive your car hire in Norfolk back to the A149 eastwards to your next destination: Wells-next-the-Sea.

Whether it be a ride on the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway, a trek to alpacas or relaxing by the fantastic beach - in Wells-next-the-Sea you are in for some great attractions. Getting hungry? Head over to Wells Crab House or the Bowling Green Inn . Of course, you can also opt for the Beach Café, if you want to stay on the beach for a little longer.

GB Norfolk Coast Path Tour Holkham Bay nach Holt EnglandBack on the A149, it will not be long until you continue your road trip to Blakeney. As with most places on your trip, the majority attractions are also to be found near the beautiful beach. Take a long walk or take a boat to the sea and watch the seals. For a glimpse into the local culture, visit the Galley Hill Farm or Artemis Homes & Antiques.

Leave Blakeney and take the Wiveton Road, which will change into Cley Road at some later point. This road takes you directly to the village of Holt. Take enough time here to extensively explore the "Natural Surroundings". The "Natural Surroundings" is a beautifully wooded retreat with natural walking paths, gardens, ponds and much more. Other interesting attractions in Holt include Muckleburgh Military Collection, the Holt Antique & Interiors Centre, Holt Castle and Stody Lodge Gardens.

Order a tasty dinner in The Barn, Number 28, or if you want to pamper yourself, head straight to Morston Hall. When looking for lodging for the night, you will see that there are many more breakfast inns than hotels in Holt. Nevertheless, there is something for everybody: The Lawns Hotel is located in a convenient location, while the Pheasant Hotel is a unique place with  rooms in designed in the old English cottage style. For smaller and more intimate rooms, see Mount Farm or Kadina Bed & Breakfast.

Norfolk Coast Path Road Trip Day 5: The final stages

Road Trip GB Norfolk Coast Path Tour Sheringham Cromer Mundesly England

On the fifth day of your road trip across the Norfolk Coast, drive your car hire in the UK on Cromer Road and leave Holt. Stay on Cromer Road until it merges with the A148 and then turn left onto the Holway Road. Keep driving until you reach the road leading to the coast municipality Sheringham. During your stay in Sheringham, you can choose from numerous attractions and landmarks to visit.

GB Norfolk Coast Path Tour Sheringham Cromer Mundesly EnglandThe most popular ones are the Sheringham Beach, Sheringham Park and Sheringham Museum (The MO). Try your hand at golf at the Sheringham Golf Club. The Sheringham Life Boat Station is also worth a visit.

After your exciting experiences in Sheringham, follow Cromer Road (named here again A149) towards the east. Drive along the beach until you can continue your road trip in Cromer. With a wealth of sights, you need to think twice about how you want to organise your stay. Among other things, don't miss out on the Cromer Beach & Pier, the Henry Blogg Museum, St. Peter and St. Paul's Cathedral and the Amazona Zoo. In addition, the Royal Cromer Golf Club will seduce you with its picturesque scenery.

Satisfy your hunger in one of the restaurants such as Bann Thai Restaurant, The Old Rock Shop Bistro and Brownes on Bond Street, all among the local favourites.

After a delicious meal, leave Cromer and embark again on the A149 to Mundesley, the last stop of the tour on the Norfolk coast. Just stay on the A149 until you get to Thorpe Road. Turn left onto it and drive through the small village of Southrepps. Thorpe Road eventually turns into Gimingham Road, and then into Southrepps Road which turns into Mundesley Road. This will finally bring you to a marvellous coastal community called the same.

Once you have finished sightseeing, you can go on the B1145 and the B1150 south to Norwich, where the nearest airport is located. For this last stage of your road trip from Mundesley, you will need about 40 minutes. However, you can also continue your holiday with a city break. The cities of Birmingham and Oxford can be reached from Mundesley in about three and a half hours. For a trip to York or Leeds, you would need just under four hours. With your car hire from Auto Europe there are no limits, only those which you set. Enjoy your holiday in the UK!
