Driving Licence Requirements 

To hire a car in Italy, you must be at least 18 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. An International Drivers License is highly recommended.

Age Restrictions

The minimum Italy age restriction is 18 years old (age may vary by car category) and you must have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Please check the Terms & Conditions when making your boking for Rome.

Road Rules and Petrol Stations 

General Italy driving information, laws rules and regulations:

  • Driving in Italy is on the right hand side of the road.

  • Seat belts when driving a hire car in Italy are mandatory.

  • The use of radar detectors is prohibited.

  • Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid driving licence, registration documents and insurance documents.

  • Lights must be used in tunnels.

  • Petrol stations in Italy are open from 7.00am to 12.30pm and from 3.30 to 7.00pm. Most stations are closed on Sundays. There are 24-hour stations along the highways.


The 'autostrade' is Italy's toll super highway and toll cards can be purchased at banks or at Automoblie Club d'Italia (ACI) offices.

Parking Information

Street parking is confined to the right side of the street. In blue zones, a Italy parking disk, obtained at tourist offices, ACI offices or gas stations must be displayed on the dashboard. Parking in this zone is limited to one hour.
