Join in the Maori New Year festivities with a car hire in Auckland

Apr 25, 2012

The Maori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, representing approximately 15 percent of the country's population. Between June 21 and July 21, the Maori celebrate the Matariki Festival to commemorate the rising of the Pleiades constellation of stars. An important part of the Maori culture, this celestial body represents the connection between mankind and the Earth, and coincides with the Maori New Year. Visitors taking a car hire in Auckland can learn more about this fascinating culture during the celebrations.

One of the highlights of the festival is Kapa Haka, a traditional Maori dance. Blending harmonised singing, movements based on ancient martial arts and authentic tribal music, Kapa Haka is a unique expression of the Maori culture.

The Matakari Festival will also feature numerous displays of traditional Maori arts and crafts, in addition to a range of activities for the whole family. Although the full programme has yet to be announced, visitors taking a car hire in new Zealand can expect a diverse, engaging and fun way to learn about the history and traditions of the Maori people.
