St. James Way

1. The way of St. James, often known by its Spanish name, el Camino de Santiago or only El Camino, is a network of pilgrimage routes across Spain which lead to the tomb of the Apostle James.

2. According to legend, the Apostle James' body was carried by boat from Jerusalem and buried in what is now the city of Santiago de Compostela.

3.The most popular route is the French Way (el Camino FrancÚs), which starts in St. Jean Pied de Port in France and covers almost 500 miles to Santiago de Compostela.

4.The French way is the most followed route because of its good infrastructure: the way is well marked and the accommodation on offer for hikers is wide and varied.

5. The pilgrims' hostels, known as "albergues" in Spanish, are cheap: between 7 and 12 Euro per night per bed.

6. A pilgrim' passport or credentials allows you to stay at the "albergues" located along the trail and receive a certificate of completion of the pilgrimage: a Compostela.

7. The scallop shell is the symbol of the St. James' Way. You will find it on posts and signs along the trial. The symbol helps to guide pilgrims along the way.

8. Many pilgrims wear a scallop to distinguish themselves as travellers of the St. James Way.

9. If you decide to walk the French Way it will take you 4 to 6 weeks or 2 weeks by bicycle. We recommend that you plan some rest days to enjoy the Spanish cuisine and go sight-seeing.

10. Along the French Way, there are some major towns such as Pamplona, Burgos and Leon, considered must-see places because of their tourist value. Book a car hire from Auto Europe to visit these places and make the most of your travels.
