The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), about six kilometers away, has opened on October 31, 2020. As the two new BER terminals T1 and T2 already proved to be too small in the construction phase, Schönefeld Airport will continue to be operated as BER Terminal 5 for the time being.

Although Schönefeld Airport is home to less amenities than other large international airports, you can still find a range of services to ensure you have a safe and comfortable journey. You will find a selection of cafés, bars and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat before your flight plus sixty minutes of free WiFi is available. Currency exchanges, ticket counters and ATMs are located here. You can even visit the observation decks at the airport for a small fee.

In case you are not picking up your car hire from Berlin Schönefeld Airport, but from a downtown location instead, there are a number of means of transportation that will take you to the city centre. The S-Bahn, regional trains and buses are available from the airport. With the Autobahn and highly-maintained roads in Germany, it is quite easy to visit surrounding cities such as Hamburg or Dresden.
Parking lots are located throughout the city of Berlin and while some of these lots are free, many you will have to pay a couple of euros for. You will generally have to pay for any lots in the centre of the city. It is advised that you park your rental car outside this area if possible and travel into the city on public transport as many 'Park & Ride' facilities exist on the outskirts. Some hotels will also offer their guests parking space.
