    Traffic and Parking

Found on the Autopista AP-7, a key toll motorway that runs along the Mediterranean coast of Spain, Girona is centrally located for travellers wishing to experience a wide variety of Spain's treasures. There are many local roads that lead along the coast to magnificent beach areas, including the Costa Brava. For mountain lovers, the Pyrenees are well within driving distance, and Barcelona sits only 99 kilometres south-west of Girona, making it an ideal day trip in any itinerary. A car is less necessary within Girona itself, as many of the medieval, narrow streets are reserved for pedestrian traffic only.

    Parking

In Girona, you are advised to park your vehicle on the outskirts of the city proper and take a short walk or public transportation into the city itself. You can leave your car rental at Parc de la Devesa, a sizable car park near the river and not far from the main bridges that lead to the Old Town area. Additional parking can be found in Placa Constitucio Girona, Plaza Catalunya, and Maragall. A GPS device will help you locate parking areas, so consider renting one when you pick up your car rental.

    Geographic Information

Situated in the middle of the Girona plains, Girona is known for its highly uneven terrain. It should be noted that the Old Town areas have large cobblestone streets and steep stairs that climb the hill on which Girona is built. When visiting this particular area, wear appropriate footwear, and plan to carry small children and rolling suitcases. The highest peak of the city (Sant Miquel, which sits in the valley of San Daniel) has an altitude of roughly 394 metres above sea level. Meanwhile, the centre of the city (Montjuic), sits at roughly 214 metres above sea level.

Girona's climate is considered continental, with temperatures ranging between -3ºC in the month of January and 36ºC in the month of July, with an annual rainfall of 800 millimetres. Because Girona sits in a river-rich area, the humidity is usually around 65 percent.

    Girona Airport

Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) is close to the city at only 10 kilometres south of the town centre. Since Ryanair made Girona one of its hubs several years ago, the airport has experienced vigorous growth, and now offers a wide range of scheduled flights from multiple European destinations. The airport itself is relatively small and hospitable.

Dozens of trains depart Girona daily to transport travellers to popular destinations: Figueres (roughly 40 minutes travel time), Barcelona (1 hour 30 minutes), and Portbou or Cerbère (50 minutes to one hour) are among the favourites.

You can pick up a taxi outside the airport. Taxi Girona provides services once you are in town. You can call 972 222323 to arrange for service. Your hotel may also be able to arrange this for you.
