The airport was first opened in 1943 as a WW II bomber base for the Royal Air Force and USA Air Forces. After the war, it had several purposes until the Ministry of Civil Aviation made it a base for charter airlines.
One big glass building is divided into three parts; check-ins, departures and arrivals. Gates as such do not exist in the terminal building but are located in three separate satellite buildings connected mostly by jet bridges.

Stansted Airport consists of one runway and one terminal building with a recently constructed extension necessary for successful management of numerous flights and 24 million passengers a year. The Departures and Arrivals are all located on the ground floor. The satellite buildings 1 and 2 where the gates are located are connected to the main building with a Transit System while Satellite 2 and 3 are connected to the terminal building via a walkway.
There are over 60 shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and lounges throughout Stansted Airport. No matter what it is you are looking for, shops and retailers such as Accessorize, Swarovski, The Body Shop, Mulberry or World of Whiskies offer a wide range of exclusive duty-free gifts for your family, friends or even yourself. You can connect to the Wi-Fi for free throughout the terminal building. At the Arrivals area, you can get all the information you need at the information desk manned every day round the clock except on Christmas Day. Additionally, you can print and fax documents from this desk, but please note that the prices tend to be on the higher side. Business travellers are well catered for with several conference rooms either directly at the airport or at one of the nearby hotels. A prayer room can be found near the check-in desk in Zone J. It is multi-confessional and open all day.
Stansted Airport is situated just off the M11 motorway - use Junction 8a if approaching from the London direction or Junction 8 from the Cambridge side, and then follow the signs for the airport. Stansted can also be reached very easily by train, bus or coach. Trains to London can be taken from the airport's own train station located under the terminal building only two minutes' walk from the srrivals area. The train service is called the Stansted Express, it runs every 15 minutes and is definitely the fastest way to travel - it takes you from London Liverpool Street directly to the airport in 47 minutes. Another frequent and low-cost way to get to Stansted is by coach. The points of departure are central destinations such as Liverpool Street, Victoria, Stratford, and Baker Street. Getting around with a car rental from Stansted Airpor, however, remains the most affordable and convenient means of transport for all who value their flexibility and freedom on their travels.
Parking is available at Stansted Airport for any duration. Short-term parking is just a short walk to the terminal, with long-term parking about a 10-minute shuttle bus ride to the terminal. If you would like to explore London by car, be sure to plan well in advance, as finding a car park in this busy city can be a challenge. Paying the London Congestion Charge in advance will allow you to enter, drive within, and exit the defined Charging Zone as many times as you wish on a specific day. Be sure to check out the car parking companies at your destination. Luckily, there are numerous commercial car parks in London, indicated by a white P on a blue background.
National Car Parks (NPC) runs about 100 car parks including a small number of disabled spaces. Q-Park is a good alternative. Book ahead and save up to 20% on the regular parking fee. Q-Park offers secure entrances, customer toilets and pushchair hire. Good to know when visiting London: Free umbrellas are also available here. Parking is restricted between 8.30am and 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. Please read the signs carefully for detailed information.
