Having recently made a classic out of town shift we've been enjoying offering 'a weekend in the country' to many of our city dweller friends. Most people choose to drive but we were surprised when a friend who does not own a car said he would be arriving under his own steam. Closer inspection revealed that the gentleman in question regularly hires a car for the weekend to save the hassle and cost of owning one. What a great idea for anyone who does not need to motor every day. After all, the ever increasing cost of motoring will take a chunk out of even the best of salaries. Recent research by the RAC (www.racnews.co.uk) shows that the cost of keeping an average car on the road is already a staggering £5,627 per year. Depreciation is the single largest contributor to this figure, at approx £2,357 per year, and loans, fuel, insurance, road tax, repairs and servicing make up the rest. That's not to mention residents' parking and other parking costs and fines. Now, this is where it gets very interesting in my opinion, divide £5,627 by 52 and you get a generous budget of £108.21 per weekend to spend on car hire! With rates starting at £72.71 for a 2 day weekend rental collecting from Victoria coach station you stand to save quite a bit of cash!
