" 1. the SUV we booked was not available, offered a saloon which was not acceptable. Offered an acceptable vehicle and advised it would be a 5 - 10 minute wait. It was actually 45 minutes. Staff were not very helpful when we queried the wait. 2. Within a few days, there was a warning message that the windscreen washer reservoir was nearly empty. Surely this should have been filled before handover. 3. Several days later there was a warning message that an oil change was due. This involved phone calls to ascertain it was OK to drive until the return date. Again surely this information should have been available to AVIS in advance of the hire period and dealt with accordingly. 3. The vehicle broke down mid hire. It took a phone call of 2.5 hours to organise and the complete the paperwork for the replacement. This was an excessive amount of time ( this was due to the process not the the call handler who was very helpful). Initially we were told we would be driven to the nearest airport to collect a vehicle, a journey of 3.5 hours each way, plus a wait of 3.5 hours for the driver to reach us. Eventually, it was agreed the vehicle would be delivered to us at the same time as the original vehicle was collected. 4. The replacement vehicle averaged 21.5 mpg compared to 31.5 mpg of the original vehicle. Obviously this was an unacceptable additional expense to us. 5. The tyres on the original vehicle were a disgrace, very little tread which was obviously a concern when travel on designated roads with a gravel surface or covering of snow. "

I picked the rental car up early and was upsold into purchasing an extra day - it would be preferable if the Avis representative could consider visitor's journeys, time differences and generally feeling dazed and not try and offer upgrades without stating upfront that there is an extra charge instead of giving in my opinion the 'complementary upgrade' impression. Incidentally I returned the car well before my original date of return so I hope the additional day I was persuaded into accepting was removed from my charges? Difficult to see on the invoice - which could be made clearer for the hirer! Finally, I completed in advance paperwork to facilitate a smooth pick up, but it took an hour of waiting in a queue post 11 h flight to get to the desk to pick the car up. I've never had to wait so long! It was holiday weekend so consider more staff at these fixed dates! "

He didn't understand that we had paid for the gold package, he said he could not provide us with the paid for GPS as they were broken, he said he will put a note on the account for us to receive a refund and then charged us $17 a day for a tablet with GPS, he said we were to return the car full of petrol even though we had paid for it. We did take it back full at drop off, this Avis service Agent was brilliant and apologised for the service given to us, he wiped off the cost of the tablet and refunded us the full tank of gas. So eventually I was pleased. Why the airport agent would not honour our package paid for, I don't understand it, maybe he was just trying to make extra commission but he would not listen and I just had to sign for the extras, I did contact Avis customer service and they said to wait until I returned the car and they would support with sorting the problem out if it was still not resolved "

" My scheduled pick up time was 16:00 but it took ~3 hours to pick up our vehicle. The counter staff sent me looking for a car which was not in the garage. I had to go back upstairs and explain the car wasn't there. I was given a different car to look for which, as it turned out, was also not in the garage. I asked members of staff where the car was and they assured me it was being cleaned and would arrive momentarily. After 15 mins I decided to go and look at the cars being cleaned.......my car was not there! Being lied to is unacceptable! I had to go back upstairs (again!) and explain the car wasn't there. I was told to get in a car that had been sitting in the garage from the start!!! I only had one night in San Francisco and this delay took a major chunk out of my evening. Unfortunately the disappointment didn't stop there. The car had awful wheel wobble at 70mph (not great when driving ~1800 miles) and the cruise control didn't work. Also the car had a lot of cosmetic damage where it had been bashed so it didn't look smart! All in all, an awful experience! "

There were b visible dents and scratches on the car that were not started on any docs I received. I was miss-sold daily e-toll $11.99 per day but only ended up using roughly $10. " I had booked a Premium SUV (described as a Ford Expedition EL or similar). I had already checked in online and was advised to go to the "QuickPass" lane on arrival as this would save time. On arrival, there was no QuickPass lane to be fine, I had to queue in the regular line. Then at the desk, the agent quickly told me that I was getting a Ford Expedition. I doubled checked, as I had specifically booked a Expedition EL/Premium SUV to get the larger trunk. The Expedition (non EL) does not have the larger trunk, and is a "Full Size" class car. The agent then repeatedly cut me off and tried to point out that my booking was for an Expedition EL "or similar". A lower class of rental is not "or similar". I would have accepted the other options Avis lists on the page about Premium SUVs: a Chevy Suburban or GMC Yukon XL. I tried to explain that I understood what "or similar" meant, and that a standard Ford Expedition was not "or similar" in this context. I was then referred to a manager, and the truth came out - Avis did not actually have any Premium SUVs available and I would have to accept something smaller, and not what I paid for. The best they could do was a Infiniti QX80, which while nice, was not the spacious car I had requested for 4 adults, 2 children, and 6 suitcases. The manager did his best, by giving us a tank of gas and covering the tolls, but this does not make up for me paying hundreds of pounds more for a car with more space, and not receiving it. "

Although I had clearly booked the 'full-to-full' fuel option, the person who I dealt with contrived to sneak the cost of a full tank of fuel onto my credit card (To be fair, however, Avis removed this charge when I returned the car with a full tank and complained). Although the tank indicated full when I picked the car up, it was in fact about three to four gallons short of full. The reason I know this is that I filled the car up at a fuel station in Joshua Tree. After then driving 150 miles back to Santa Monica, the fuel gauge still indicated above the full mark; higher than when I had picked the car car up with a supposedly full tank. "

" The whole experience was a nightmare. First i didn't receive a confirmation email so when i landed in Philadelphia Airport i didn't know where or who i was picking the car up from. Our friend had to call and ask for instructions. The pick up was ok. Whist using the veichle was encountered problems using the toll roads due to the ez pass being faulty. The box did not close properly so therefore kept being read when approaching the tolls. We were not issued a ticket by the machine and we didn't know why until someone told us it was picking up the pass? This caused considerable stress and anxiety being in a foreign country not knowing what we were doing wrong. When all along it was the box that was faulty. The drop off was poor. The attendant in the car park couldn't issue a receipt so i had to go inside. We were running late for our flight so i joined a long line. Then we were told to go back outside to get my receipt. In the end i went up to the desk and was told to just leave the car. I have a 3 year old who was asleep in the car, my wife is also pregnant, we had 4 bags to unload, and get on to a shuttle bus. It was a very stressful situation and not a very pleasant way to end our holiday. "

" Great value and great car but had several poor customer service experienced. My check in experience was not great - I got sent to three different parking spaces without a car in it and then was given my car's license plate and told to "go find it". Didn't seem to care if I got into the wrong car. Then I wanted to turn in my car early and it took me over an hour to speak to a person - dialing all different numbers. Then the person I got through to was all over the place and kept making jokes which was super frustrating. Then told me it was going to cost me money when it wasn't. And all around I wouldn't book again with Avis knowing that was the customer experience I was going to get if I could get a car for the same price from someone else. "

" Avis in San Francisco were very inefficient. I arrived at the scheduled time. It the car was not ready. I had to wait in a crowded office and then when the car was available it was still dirty and had loads in dents and singes on it. Worst of all, the rear tyres were illlegal. I have taken pictures to show this. I am not impressed at all. "

" One small detail: we had ordered a child seat to go with the car. This was provided, but with no instructions for use. When we were asked, we were told that not only did the staff not know how to fit the seat, they couldn't even advise for liability reasons. I found this to be quite poor - surely the correct use of child seats is something they _should_ be trained in - they'll have more experience of their cars and seats than a customer coming to them for the first time? "
