    Airport Information

    Milan-Malpensa Airport (MXP)
    Official Name: Milan Malpensa Airport.
Italian Name: Aeroporto di Milano Malpensa. Also known as City of Milan Airport.
Address: Airport di Milano-Malpensa1 2000, 21010 Ferno, Italy.
Location: The airport is in the Varese Province, 25 miles north-west of Milan.
Airlines operating at Milan Malpensa Airport: Over 70 airlines operate flights out of Milan-Malpensa Airport, including airlines operating intercontinental flights, and major European airlines, such as British Airways and Lufthansa. Notably, the budget airline Easy Jet is the only airline operating at Terminal 2, which is Easy Jet's biggest base outside the UK.

    Terminals

Milan-Malpensa Airport is the largest of the Milan airports, and has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Only Easy Jet flights operate from Terminal 2. The two terminals are a few miles apart, so if you need to transfer between the two, remember to reserve enough time. A shuttle bus runs between the terminals, with the bus stops found on the ground levels of both terminals. The service runs 24 hours: every seven minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes between 10.45pm and 5.15am. The journey between the terminals takes about 10 minutes. There is also a help desk located on nearly every floor of both terminals, in case you need further assistance.

Terminal 1 is divided into three parts: 1A, 1B, and 1C. Domestic and intra-Schengen area flights operate from 1A, and other flights from 1B and newly opened 1C. Those who need to pass through passport control after landing will enter into arrivals area B, whereas others will arrive in arrivals area A. You can find baggage claim on the ground floor. Check-in counters are located on the second floor.

In Terminal 2 both baggage claim and the check-in counters are located on the ground floor.

Car hire Pick up and Drop off

At both Terminals 1 and 2, car rental desks are found in the arrivals hall. Many car rental companies only have desks at Terminal 1, so if you are arriving at Terminal 2 but need to pick up your car in Terminal 1, you should make use of the shuttle bus service connecting the two terminals.

Please remember to note the supplier of your car rental on your voucher, found on the first page, when picking up your car. Auto Europa is only one of the many suppliers at the airport, and thus you should not head straight for the Auto Europa desk, as this is not the same company as Auto Europe. Auto Europa is an Italian car hire company, while Auto Europe is a car hire broker.

    Airport Facilities

The many shops and restaurants ensure that your visit to Milan Malpensa Airport will be a comfortable one. In Terminal 1 you can find restaurants on each floor, and shopping facilities on the first and second floors. ATMs and currency exchange desks are on the ground, first, and second floors, and the police office is located on the ground floor. In Terminal 2 ATMs, currency exchange, and the police are all found on the ground level, while restaurants and shops are located on both the ground and first floors. The airport provides wireless internet access in the arrivals and boarding lounges, check-in areas, as well as passenger restaurants.

Transportation / How to get to the airport

The airport is connected to two major motorways, the A8 and the A4. The A8 links the airport to central Milan: the drive should take just over 40 minutes. If you are headed to Turin, for example, you can follow the A4, and you should be able to make the 85-mile journey in about an hour and a half. Remember that there is a congestion charge for driving into the central area of Milan within the old city walls, with the amount of the charge depending on the age of the car and what kind of engine it has. You can find additional information regarding driving in Italy here.

In case you are not picking up your car hire from Milan Malpensa Airport, but from a downtown location instead, there are a number of means of transportation that will take you to the centre of Milan. Firstly, you could take the train. The airport train station is located in Terminal 1, and thus if you are arriving at Terminal 2 you should take the shuttle bus to Terminal 1 first. The Malpensa Express, operated by TRENORD, runs services to Piazza Cadorna Station (travel time about half an hour) and Milan Central Station (travel time about 45-55 minutes). There are also services operated by TRENITALIA.

Alternatively, you could board a bus, which makes stops at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Thus, this may be a more convenient option for those flying to or from Terminal 2. Bus services are run by STIE Autostradale and Air Pullman. The buses run about every 20 minutes and sell tickets on board. The bus stops can be found on the ground levels of both terminals.

    Parking Tips

Finding street parking is not easy in the centre of Milan, but if you do find a space, remember that parking is charged Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm or 11pm, depending on which zone you are in. There are also numerous paid car parks. For example, Garage San Remo Srl is close by if you are visiting the Duomo. Milan's public transportation also offers a park and ride option: farther from the centre, there are parking spaces offered near metro stations on the M1, M2 and M3 lines.
