Milan-Malpensa Airport is the largest airport in Milan, with two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Only Easy Jet flights operate from Terminal 2. The two terminals are a few miles apart, so if you need to transfer between the two, remember to set aside enough time.

A shuttle bus runs between the terminals, with the bus stops found on the ground levels of both terminals. The service runs 24 hours: every seven minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes between 10.45pm and 5.15am. The journey between the terminals takes about 10 minutes. There is also a help desk located within both terminals, in case you need further assistance.

In 2016 a new train terminal opened in Terminal 2 which also connects you effortlessly to Terminal 1. The rail station can be found on the lower floor.

Terminal 1 is divided into three parts: 1A, 1B, and 1C. Domestic and intra-Schengen area flights operate from 1A, and other flights from 1B and newly opened 1C. Those who need to pass through passport control after landing will enter into arrivals area B, whereas others will arrive in arrivals area A. You can find baggage reclaim on the ground floor. Check-in counters are located on the second floor.

In Terminal 2 both baggage reclaim and the check-in counters are located on the ground floor. Along with its 36 gates, it also has 10 passport control desks and 6 ticketing desks.

    Airport Facilities

With over 7,250 sqm of retail space and an additional 74 food and beverage stores, including restaurants, your visit to Milan-Malpensa Airport will no doubt be a comfortable experience. In Terminal 1 you can find restaurants on each floor, and shopping facilities on the first and second floors. ATMs and currency exchange desks are on the ground, first, and second floors, and the police office is located on the ground floor.

In Terminal 2, ATMs, currency exchange and the police desk can be found on the ground level, whilst restaurants and shops are located on both the ground and first floors. The airport provides wireless internet access in the arrivals and boarding lounges, check-in areas, as well as air-side restaurants.

How to get to and from Milan-Malpensa Airport

The airport is connected to two major motorways, the A8 and the A4. The A8 links the airport to central Milan: the drive should take just over 40 minutes. If you are headed to Turin, for example, you can follow the A4, and you should be able to make the 85-mile journey in about an hour and a half. Remember that there is a congestion charge for driving into the central area of Milan within the old city walls, with the amount of the charge depending on the age of the car and what kind of engine it has. You can find additional information regarding driving in Italy here.

In case you are not picking up your car hire from Milan-Malpensa Airport, but from a downtown location instead, there are a number of means of transportation that will take you to the centre of Milan. Firstly, you could take the train. The airport train station is located in Terminal 1, and thus if you are arriving at Terminal 2 you should take the shuttle bus or the connecting train to Terminal 1 first. The Malpensa Express, operated by TRENORD, runs services to Piazza Cadorna Station (travel time is around half an hour) and Milan Central Station (travel time around 45-55 minutes). There are also services operated by TRENITALIA

Alternatively, you could board a bus, which stops at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Thus, this may be a more convenient option for those flying to or from Terminal 2. Bus services are run by STIE Autostradale and Air Pullman. Buses run every 20 minutes and tickets can be purchased on-board. Bus stops are found on the ground levels of both terminals.

If you decide not to rent a car at Milan-Malpensa, then a Taxi service also operates with Taxi ranks found outside both Terminals. In Terminal 1 the Taxi ranks are located at the arrivals area, exit 6, on the ground floor level, whilst at Terminal 2, it is at exit 4. Please make sure you agree on a cost with the driver before you commence you journey.
