Car hire at Malta Airport - Exploring the Island in Style

Malta's excellent international Airport (also referred to as Valletta or Luqa Airport) is the only airport on the island and serves the entire archipelago, along with the two much smaller islands of Gozo and Comino. Located 5km (3 miles) south-west of the capital, Valletta, the airport receives direct flights from a large number of destinations, including London, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Dublin, Exeter, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds/Bradford, Liverpool, Manchester, Norwich, Prestwick and Newcastle.

Catering for more than eight million passenger movements every year, Malta Airport serves as the main hub for the popular national carrier, Air Malta, as well as a busy base for the British low-cost airline, Ryanair. The airport's operating standards are generally very high and it has ranked second in the Best Airport by Region category at the coveted Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards. The annual Malta Airshow (one of the best in the international calender) also takes place there every September.

Blessed with an abundance of attractions and thousands of years of history, the enchanting Mediterranean island of Malta is one of Europe's most popular destinations. Valletta, its ancient capital, is an impressive port city that was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1980. Other UNESCO-listed attractions worth visiting on the island include the enormous subterranean structure known as the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and the seven megalithic temples found on Malta and neighbouring Gozo.

Malta is the ideal destination for a relaxing motoring holiday and with a car hire from Malta Airport you'll be able to see and do everything during your stay on the island. The delightful medieval hilltop town of Mdina in the centre of the island is a must for lovers of Maltese history and culture, along with the neighbouring town of Rabat a few kilometres away. And when it's time for the beach, you just need to head for the long golden sands of St Paul's Bay a short drive north-west of Valletta.

    Airport Information

Malta Airport is located towards the south-east of the island, close to the villages of Luqa and Gudja. The former's name often shows up in flight searches because it is often referred to as Luqa Airport by many people working in the travel industry. The airport has two runways, 28 aircraft parking stands and currently handles flights from over 80 destinations around the world. Today's ultra-modern airport isn’t Malta’s first, in fact the terminal of the original airport located close to the main building is now used for housing freight and cargo.

Malta International Airport is compact and very well designed air transportation centre that revolves around a single passenger terminal building that contains an Arrivals Hall and a Departures Hall situated alongside each other. The airport is very easy to navigate and is easily accessible, even for passengers of reduced mobility.

    Airport Facilities

Malta Airport offers the kind of range of facilities you would expect at an international airport. Dining options include Burger King, Costa Coffee, Dr. Juice, KFC, McDonald's, Vecchia Napoli and Zensushi, while the selection of shops on offer includes Parfois, WH Smith, Herbe and Saltwater. Passengers looking to save cash on perfume, cosmetics, spirits and cigarettes can do so in the Dufry duty-free store located in the Departures Hall. And the Hard Rock Retail Store (also prominently situated in the Departures Hall) is a must for music lovers looking to kill some time before their flight. Passengers also have the possibility to organise private business meetings, relax in one of the airport's luxury lounges and charge their smartphones and other mobile devices. MLA's chapel is located next to the Food Court on Level -1 and is open 24/7.

How to get to and from Malta Airport

As it's a relatively small island, you'll be able to pick up and drop off your car rental at Malta Airport without any delay whatsoever, meaning that you'll have more time to enjoy relaxing on the beach and/or visiting its most popular attractions. The airport is easy access by car; it is conveniently located along the main throughway that links the villages of Luqa and Gudja. Just follow the signs leading to the airport, which you will see all over the island. Public transport in Malta revolves around its bus network with four express routes designated for travelling to and from the airport, running from early morning until late at night. Route X1 connects the airport with Ċirkewwa from where the ferry to Gozo departs. It also passes from the main hospital, university, St Julian’s and the centre of Mellieħa. Route X2 runs between the airport, St Julian’s and Sliema, while Route X3 is the best one to take if you’re staying at Buġibba, Qawra or St Paul’s Bay, passing Birkirkara, Attard, Mdina and Rabat en route. Route X4 serves Valletta (the island's vibrant capital) and the neighbouring town of Floriana, as well as Birżebbuġa in the south. Taxi services between the Malta International Airport and any destination on the island operate 24 hours a day, with pre-paid tickets available for purchase at fixed rates from a booth inside the airport's Arrivals Hall.

    Parking Tips

After picking up your car hire from Malta Airport, you'll probably need to find somewhere to leave it for a few hours while you see some of the main sights, especially in the island's enchanting capital, Valletta. Here, available parking spaces are clearly marked in white (anyone can park), yellow (forbidden to park), green (pernanently reserved for local residents) and blue (only reserved for local residents between the hours of 7pm and 7am). If you park illegally on yellow lines or in no-parking areas, you run the risk of being fined. Furthermore, if you obstruct vehicles in a tow zone, your car may get clamped and/or towed (and you’ll be slapped with a hefty fine!). Malta Airport has several parking areas, most notably the Park East Multi-Storey Car Park where most of the main car rental companies operate. Please note that the first 10 minutes of your stay at any one of the airport car parks are free, which is ideal if you are picking up or dropping someone off.
