Car hire at Marrakech Airport - For the best of Morocco

With its burgeoning collection of first-rate museums and art galleries, the picture-postcard city of Marrakech is the perfect base from which to explore central Morocco. It's a place to pick up a bargain or two and soak up the North African culture in the many markets in and around its bustling downtown area.

Marrakesh dates back to 1060 when it was founded by the Berbers who developed it into one of the largest trading posts in North Africa, along with Fez, Meknes and Rabat. Today it is the perfect place for visitors to fully immerse themselves in one of the world’s most inspiring and culturally enriching travel experiences.

Much of the original city remains, most notably the Medina which is still protected by its imposing walls that allow visitors access through over a dozen gates. Besides the Medina, Marrakech has a great many unmissable attractions to fill several days of fascinating sightseeing. Spend some time exploring the Saadian Tombs set in the cool, refreshing atmosphere of the Saadi Dynasty mausoleum before taking a leisurely stroll in the Majoreele Gardens once owned by the French fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent.

Another must for visitors to Marrakech is the magnificent El Badi Palace built in the 16th century by Sultan Ahmed al Mansour to celebrate a famous victory over the Portuguese at the Battle of the Three Kings. Nearby, the Marrakech Museum houses a fine collection of Moroccan art as well as many priceless examples of historical books, coins, pottery and other rare exhibits.

A major reason for picking up your car hire at Marrakech Airport is the chance to enjoy the many incredible landscapes within easy reach of the city. Don't miss the chance to visit the picturesque seaside town of Essaouira west of Marrakech, which is famous for its traditional handicrafts and long sandy beaches. Likewise, the drive to the beautiful mud-brick village of Ait-Benhaddou is one of the world's great road trips as you drive along in the shadow of the High Atlas Mountains.

From Marrakech, it's also possible to visit some of Morocco's other famous cities, including Casablanca which was immortalised by the 1942 Hollywood film starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Visitors to Casablanca can visit the Hassan II Mosque, one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslims. Another beautiful city within striking distance of Marrakech is Fez, a place of immense patrimonial importance and architectural beauty.

Covering a total area of some 42,000 square-metres, the twin-terminal building at Marrakech Menara Airport is an ultra-modern facility designed for a capacity of around 9 million passengers a year. Both two-level constructions, Terminals 1 and 2 cater for both international and domestic flights, while a smaller and less used terminal (3) is located in an adjacent building. One of the largest on the African continent, the airport has aircraft parking space for up to fourteen Boeing 737s and four Boeing 747s, in addition to a 340 square-metre covered cargo terminal. Designed for the most modern aircraft, the paved runway is laid out in the direction 10/28 is 3,100 metres by 45 metres and is equipped with the ILS Cat II landing system.

    Airport Facilities

The airport offers a full range of on-site amenities for passengers both arriving at and departing from Marrakech. There's a well-stocked book shop, newsagent, large Duty Free store and other shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs. For passengers with enough time to eat something prior to travelling, don't miss the popular Tamazirt Moroccan pastry outlet, Moulin Vert chocolate shop and the Douceurs d'Orient food stall. Other facilities include ATMs, a lost-luggage centre, storage lockers, toilets, banks, a prayer room, post office, wheelchair rental services, medical assistance and several foreign exchange offices for travellers looking to change up their money into dirhams (the local currency).

How to get to and from Marrakech Airport

From Marrakech Airport, an efficient shuttle-bus service has regular departures from early morning until late at night for passengers transferring to and from the centre of Marrakech. From the airport it stops at Place de Foucauld (just a 1-minute walk from Djemaa el-Fna) before carrying on to Ave. Mohammed V via Bab Nkob and Guéliz, passing Place du 16 Novembre and Marrakech Railway Station en route. If you don't fancy the shuttle bus (demand can be high in the summer), take a 'petit' taxi into the city centre, but be informed that it's definitely best to negotiate the fare before entering the vehicle! If you're staying in a riad hotel in and around the busy Medina district, it's possible to organise a private airport transfer for a much higher price, although it can be a safer option for passengers arriving late at night.

    Parking Tips

Marrakech Airport has two spacious car parks each with approximately 1,000 spaces for cars, plus an additional 200 spaces for tourist buses etc. After picking up your car hire at Marrakech Airport, you'll need to give some thought to where you are going to park it once you arrive in the city. The streets in and around the Medina located in the city centre (as well as other parts of downtown Marrakech) are best explored on foot, although with a bit of time and patience it is possible to find street parking spaces without too much difficulty. The best way of finding car parking spaces close to where you are staying is to ask the hotel staff and they will happily tell you. Some parts of the Medina are quite easily accessible by car, while the main tourist sites outside the Medina will require you to park your car a bit further away.
