Car hire at Tokyo Narita Airport - Discovering the Japanese Capital

Tokyo's Narita Airport is located some 65 kilometres (40 miles) to the east of the Japanese capital, close to the town of Narita in the city's Chiba district. Opened in May 1978, it was originally known as New Tokyo International Airport until it was privatised and renamed in 2004. Over a hundred major airlines connect Tokyo Narita Airport with dozens of different cities both around the world and internally within Japan itself. NRT (the airline's code) handles around 35 million annual passenger movements generated by more than 200,000 flight arrivals and departures.

Tokyo, a city where the ultra-modern and the traditional blend harmoniously, is conveniently located in the very heart of the country. Much of its history dates back to the Edo period from 1603 to 1868 and many of its top sights portray this very important period in Japan's development, most notably the lavish Imperial Palace and the excellent Edo-Tokyo Museum. Tokyo's vast assortment of other key attractions includes the Meiji Shrine, Sensō-ji Temple, National Museum of Nature and Science, the Yomiuriland theme park and the head-spinning views from the top of the 634-metre-high Skytree tower.

One of the main advantages of collecting your car hire at Tokyo Narita Airport is being able to enjoy the best of the city before exploring the capital's outlying areas. The city's extensive Pacific coastline offers travellers some thrilling road-trip opportunities with the chance of discovering some traditional Japanese seaside towns and fishing villages before relaxing one of the many long sandy beaches to be found in the Tokyo region. Besides visiting Mount Fuji (one of the world's most iconic snow-capped volcanoes), you shouldn't miss miss Atami, a picturesque town with numerous spas and museums about a 90-minute drive south of Tokyo, nor Nikkō National Park around 180 kilometres due north of the capital.

An affordable car rental from Narita Airport offers good access to Tokyo and many of the other fascinating places to see in Japan. No other car hire company compares with Auto Europe, who have been offering great prices and the best service since 1954. We currently offer more than 28,000 convenient pick-up points in over 180 popular destinations worldwide, including Tokyo's two international airports, namely Narita and Haneda. Airport Information

One of Japan's main aerial gateways, Narita Airport is located around 65 kilometres from the city centre and (depending on your choice of transportation) it takes about 1-1.5 hours to get to the heart of Tokyo. In operation since the 20th of May 1978, NRT operates around the clock 24/7 although planes are prohibited from landing or taking off between midnight and 6am. Catering mostly for the growing number of international flights arriving in Tokyo, it is one of two major air transportation hubs serving the Japanese capital, along with Tokyo Haneda Airport located in the city's Ota district.

    Terminals

Narita Airport has three large terminals - Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 - each of which serves different airlines and offering a wide range of on-site amenities and facilities. Terminal 1 caters for the majority of international airlines while Terminal 2 is mainly used by international carriers such as Delta Air Lines and Japan Airlines. Terminal 3 is mostly dedicated to low-cost carriers with fewer shops, restaurants and passenger facilities.

    Airport Facilities

The airport's three terminals are home to some three hundred restaurants, stylish boutiques and extensive Duty-free stores. One of NRT's star attractions is the busy Japan Food Hall where traditional Japanese food and beverages are sold. Furthermore, several upmarket commercial areas such as Narita North Street and Narita 5th Avenue cater for passengers in search of trendy fashion-wear and other popular items whilst waiting for their flight. When passing through, look out for +NRT Factory trademark, the airport's dedicated brand of souvenirs and special gourmet food products based on local ingredients. The airport's long list of other services includes baby-changing areas, free Wi-fi and charging outlets, 24-hour convenience stores, numerous restaurants (including vegetarian options), prayer rooms, quiet rooms, children's play areas, massage chairs, ATMs and currency exchange bureaux, baggage-delivery services, coin-operated lockers and several large Duty-free shopping areas selling perfumes, cosmetics, souvenirs and the very latest gadgets and electrical appliances.

How to get to and from Tokyo Narita Airport

Travellers in the city planning to drop off their car hire at Tokyo Narita Airport at the end of their rental period should head east-north-east on either the Higashi-Kanto Expressway or the Keiyo Road which merges with the Shin-Kuko Expressway, after which you need to exit when you see the Narita IC sign. There are many other efficient transport options available, such as the popular JR Narita Express and NRT's superb rail services featuring the ultra-modern Keisei Skyliner train which links the airport with central Tokyo in just over 30 minutes. Likewise, a good number of bus services connect Tokyo Narita Airport with the city's main train station throughout the day and night, making the airport one of the world's best air transportation hubs for passenger transfers both before and after arriving in the Japanese capital.

    Parking Tips

Car Parks P-1 and P-5 are located near Terminal 1, and Car Parks P-2 and P-3 are located near Terminal 2. If you use Terminal 3, please use the car parks near Terminal 2. During the busy seasons, P-1 and P-5 near Terminal 1 may be fully occupied. In such case, you can take a terminal shuttle bus free of charge from the car parks near Terminal 2. Drivers renting electric vehicles are advised that dedicated charging spaces are provided in car parks P-1 and P-2. Unlike the airport, finding a parking space in Tokyo city centre often requires a bit of advance planning, especially during the week. Japanese parking signs are clear to see and most often denoted by the ubiquitous P sign found in cities all over the world. Where available, on-street parking is indicated by parking meters where you buy a ticket for the required time and leave it visibly on top of the dashboard. Car parks are very common across the city, some of which use innovative methods such as a wheel lock (known as a flap-locks) that rises from the ground underneath your car, thus keeping it in place until the parking ticket has been paid. For visiting the city's top attractions, look out for paid car parks (often called Koin-Parking coin-operated car parks) in which you can pay by the hour in close proximity to the museum, art gallery or other tourist sight you are visiting.
