" I have had issues with budget car rental, contacted AutoEurope and been redirected... This is unhel "
" The rental was reserved from July 19th to August 1st. However, my flight was delayed and I subsequently missed the connecting flight to O'Hare airport. My rental was paid through AutoEurope, and when I called to update Budget in the US, I was told that they would need AutoEurope to contact them, as they held the reservation. AutoEurope kindly contacted Budget on two occasions to keep them updated. When I arrived at O'Hare Airport on 20th July and picked up the car, the reservation was honoured, and my rental, voucher was accepted. The only issue was an excessive charge for prepaid tolls which I immediately contacted your customer service about. I was assured that the charge was removed, but I was in for a bigger shock when I finally received the rental invoice / receipt, as I had been charged $2227.84 for the rental period, and that charge is still showing in my account despite several emails back and forth to your agents who claim that the charges were removed. I have never had a car rental charge of this amount in all my 60 plus years. I would actually be loathe to use budget again or recommend your company, as every time that I have rented from your company I have had issues regarding billing. "

" We arrived at Chicago O'Hare early, 14:00 for a 15:00 pick up, no vehicle was available until 14:50 after much running around behind the scenes, the lady on the counter was not helpful at all and just kept shrugging her shoulders, saying we are early anyway, on getting a car, we opened the door to be hit by the awful smell of cigarettes, neither myself or my wife smoke and this was pretty uncomfortable for us, we did not feel we could go back and complain as we had already waited nearly an hour for the car, and knew we would have had to wait even longer, we had a 6.5 hour drive after our flight from the UK, we drove with the windows down for all the journey and on arriving at our sons home he commented on how bad our clothes smelt of cigarettes, we had to buy cleaning cloths and air freshener for the car and even on returning the vehicle it still smelt bad of cigarettes, I know that thrifty operate a no smoking policy in the rental agreement but this has not been adhered to in this vehicle, we actually did not look forward to getting in the car every day, hugely disappointing and uncomfortable for the whole rental period, we even went to the local airport where we were staying in Michigan to try to change the car but Thrifty did not have a desk there and the closest one was 2.5 hours drive away in Grand Rapids, in the future I do not think we will chose Thrifty due to the presentation of this car. "

Then dollar only provided a compact SUV. The vehicle was barely big enough for our family of 5. The vehicle had 40,000 miles and was scratched on every panel and had a misaligned headlight. It had a noisy wheel baring which made the car vibrate at 60mph (the majority of our USA travel was completed at 60mph). The air conditioning was not particularly cold and the vehicle smelled bad when sitting for a day in the sun. The car also had a mild shudder under braking. Autoeurope were impossible to contact by telephone, despite trying 3 numbers specific to north america. The email to the reservations team took over 24 hrs to gain a response, by which point we had left chicago and started our family holiday. Any opportunity to change the vehicle had passed. I was told no other vehicle in that class was available. I was not going to pay a further upgrade to a premium SUV. "

Cashier at the ORD airport took advantage; he told us we'd go through lots of Tolls between ORD & LA and there was no way to pay them except for having a Platepass box or pay a $25 fine each time, we challenged for clarity 3/4 times, but after his repeated scaremongering and his confirmation that there is no other way to pay we were put in a position there was no other option. We spent $150 for the plate pass we never used on the whole 2 wk trip. In total, he pushed the platepass 8-10 times. He then tried to tell us we wouldn't get recovery if we broke down it would be our responsibility so we had to buy additional cover which we said no to. The same Cashier gave us a parking space number, we loaded our cases, did our final checks and realised that the number plate on paperwork didn't match the one we were sat in. " Auto Europe must look at Dollar at O'Hare Airport - they are blaming their lack of inventory on third party bookers selling rentals they can't honour. Whilst this did not affect our booking the experience of waiting in line wondering if we would be able to get the car we had paid for was very stressful after a day of travelling, and many of our fellow customers were having a horrendous time. " *Note our experience with the counter staff we dealt with was positive: she was professional and able to answer any questions we had so we have no complaints about her.* The reviews of Dollar (at O'Hare airport) on Google are very accurate in that they seem to be over-booking against the number of cars they have. We saw at least a dozen people/families who had been at the service desk for many hours waiting on cars to become available. Many had been told they could have a car sooner if they paid more - which seems extremely predatory. One person we talked to had been waiting 8 hours and seemed to be getting nowhere, despite having a confirmed booking and having his money taken already. The telephone customer service for Dollar that he was dealing with were useless. We heard many stories like this during our 40 minute queue time. The manager of the Hertz/Dollar/Thrifty came out to address the angry crowd and put the blame on third party booking sites, saying 'they don't check our inventory, they just take your money and cross their fingers that we have cars available'. He followed up by saying something to the effect of 'if you don't like it, you can take your business elsewhere'. Note that, having seen these reviews in advance I called Auto Europe to bring it to their attention and get some assurance that it wouldn't happen to my booking. AE thought the reviews couldn't be true because Dollar are part of such a large and well-known group of brands. We were 'fortunate' in that we had booked a ridiculous car (a 7-seat full-size SUV) and paid a lot of money for it, so they had it ready for us. Had we have booked a normal sized car or small SUV we may have had to wait hours for something to become available, or be asked to pay more to upgrade. This with a party of 5 following a day of international travelling and having a 3 hour drive ahead of us made us very anxious whilst waiting in the queue. While we were fortunate we saw that many were not. That said, the agent who served us was very nice, and once we got to her we were in our car within 15 minutes. Even though our experience was ultimately fine, this seems to have been through luck and we would therefore urge AE to address this with Dollar and for customers to go elsewhere until this is remedied. "

" I booked a midsize/compact (advised 'VW Jetta or similar') one way rental from Chicago to LA. When I picked up the car I had no choice but was given a Dodge Journey SUV. Nice car but NOT what I wanted for a 3000 mile journey. I picked a midsize for fuel economy. The last Jetta I hired did approximately 35mpg. The Dodge Journey did 23mpg. This made a HUGE difference to my costs. The not very helpful desk clerk at Budget at O-Hare basically said that was all they had for a one way hire and more or less take it or leave it. "

Upon returning it though I had to wait over an hour as there was a long line of people waiting and only two staff dealing with customers. The second car although immaculately turned out had a service problem which I could feel whilst driving. Upon reporting the fault I was told to return the vehicle if i would like to swap it but unfortunately the route I was on did not take me past a budget rental place. I was slightly more concerned when returning the vehicle that the person checking it in said there was a service fault registering on its computer and was surprised it had been released to me. However the check in was speedy and allied us to reach the airport in plenty of time. "

" Collection of vehicle took about 1.5 hours, there seemed a lack of urgency from some of the counter staff, had to consult colleagues frequently about rental details printed on your voucher. I would have expected all the details from your reservation to be on their computer but this doesn't seem to be the case. I didn't take any of the extras offered at the counter but have had an extra $409 dollars taken from my card when there was no mention at time of pickup there would any extra charges to those I had already paid to yourselves. With a massive queue building up behind I didn't check through the rental agreement, we were desperate to get out after such a long wait, the van was great though, almost new & served us well over the 2 weeks. " The car I tried to book was a Dodge Challenger or Similar and I was provided a VW Passat. While this was explained away as a 'standard car' I don't feel the Passat is similar. The Car was acceptable, though not without fault, tyre pressure monitoring system was faulty, door seals had failed and there was loose trim on the underside of the vehicle. Staff were very efficient at drop off and made that very easy, and the value for money was still very good, only slightly more than others were offering economy compacts. "

The Chicago O'Hare Dollar rep - 'Louis' was adament that the voucher, although acknowledgeing it said it included roadside assistance, said it did not and he didn't know why Auto Europe said that it did. It appeared and felt like Louis just wanted to sell us a roadside assistance package. "

I had booked and paid for the car of my choice or similar but was informed they didn't have the one I booked but I could upgrade for $10 a day I wasn't pleased and the last thing you want after a long flight is to argue about something you had already spent time organising!
