Driving Licence Requirements

The driving licence requirement in the Cook Islands state that you must be at least 18 years old and have a full driving licence valid in your country of residence. You will also need to purchase a local drivers license Cook Islands. The cost is approx NZ $22.50.

Age Restrictions

To hire a car on the Cook Islands, you must be at least 21 years old and have held your license for 1 year.

• Arorangi to Ngatangiia - 15kms (20mins)

Road Rules and Petrol Stations

General Cook Islands driving information, laws rules and regulations:

• Driving in the Cook Islands is on the left hand side of the road.

• Seat belts when driving a car in the Cook Islands are mandatory. 

• Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid drivers licence, registration documents and insurance documents.

• There are no traffic lights on any of the islands so do be extra carefully when approaching crossroads.

• Petrol stations in the Cook Islands are easy to find and generally open from 9am until 8pm, 7 days a week.

Tolls

With the island being so small in size, are no tolls in the Cook Islands.

Parking Information

You can park a car in Rarotonga in most places on the island, however it is not safe to leave valuables on display.
