This meant that we returned the car without refuelling as the display said that the engine wouldn't restart if we stopped to fuel up. Calling their phone number takes you through to a call centre where English is not easily spoken and gives rise to confusion and difficulty in making your complaint understood. "

Kept me waiting for half a day for the replacement vehicle to arrive only to find it older and with greater mileage on the clock than the original vehicle. Upon inspection, road wheel and spare wheel tyre pressures were dangerously under-inflated. My rental contract was 'full to full'. Made sure I filled up at a petrol station 3km away from the rental returns depot and got charged R427.47 for refuelling!!! All in all, I will never do business with First Car again. "

" We arrived into Cape Town Airport aroung 4.45pm. Collecting the car was a long walk from the terminal but once there was relatively quick. Despite being told that we would find a staff member to review the car with us there was no one at the car pickup area. We were told it was the weekend and why should staff inspect the car with us. We inspected the car ourselves. The car provided was ok, with small ares of damage as expected on a car with +38000km registered. Over the rental the ignition key battery became flat and would no longer lock or unlock the car. The return was quick but we were not given any document confirming tank level or condition. I had to pay a deposit of ZAR5250 on pickup and was told this would be refunded on the cars return. I was shocked to see on invoice emailed to me on my return to the UK that I had been charged ZAR2250 for Young Drivers insurance surcharge. I am 64 and have held a drivers licence since I was 16 and was the only driver of the vehicle. I used the online forms to query this charge however Firts Car did not refund and failed to answer my query. I had to telephone them in South Africa and the handler agreed that this was incorrect and said i would be refunded the amount. I wait to see if this occurs. "

At drop of time, the attendant wanted to to make the scratches as my fault, fortunately I had the pictures as evidence. It's rather poor for a car rental company to try and make you try to leave with the vehicle without proper documentation of issues. Further, the excess quoted looks quite different to those agrees with Auto Europe which was ZAR8000 whilst First Car made me sign an excess of ZAR12000, again that was quite disappointing. I'll not be using Auto Europe and First car again going forward. "

" I have hired with you lots of times in the past but this was very disappointing. You now only seem to use Budget, First and Bluue in Cape Town whereas in the past you had much more choice. "
" The first car I was given overheated just as I left the airport and was joining the motorway so had to return and exchange it which was very time consuming because of the large queues at First. The second car, a Suzuki celerio , was a very poor car. It had no remote locking and not even central locking which is a real safety and security issue in S.Africa. I then got a chip in the bottom, middle of the windscreen when a stone or something hit it so as I didnt like that car I returned and exchanged it again. I was charged for a whole new windscreen without them even advising me. The first thing I knew was when my bank queried the charge. So I then ended up with a third car which was extremely old and not what I would expect from a hire company. When I returned it there was nobody around at all to accept it so I had to wait till somebody came. The whole experience was way below what I would expect from a car hire and it cost me both time and money each time I had to return to the airport. I most definitely will NOT be hiring with First again! "

" I do appreciate that South Africa is not for the soft hearted and have visited upwards of 15 times using Auto Europe for most af my visits. In this instance I do believe you fell short in what I consider was a failure in ensuring a basic level of customer care with regards to my tyre problem. A get you home tyre is a NO NO when touring the outer reaches of SA as it happens I did not have a tyre problem, but it made travel a worry. If on my next booking you cannot give me a piece of mind then I will have to seek other arrangement with my future bookings "

" Having been told when I collected the car that no charge would be made on my credit card for the deposit, I found that it was taken out of my account and I am now waiting for it to be returned.no doubt I will lose out on the exchange rate. ( I had already paid for the rental in full through Auto Europe) I returned the car having filled it at the filling station a few hundred yards from the car rental returns. I was surprised to receive an invoice for R 53 which was for fuel - R20 of this for a service charge for the privilege of being charged for 2,2 litres of fuel. Having filled the car to the brim there is no way another 2 litres would have fitted in the tank. I know the amount charged may seem insignificant but I object on principle since 5ere is no way I can guarantee that the car was completely full to overflowing when I originally collected it. So, from being very happy with all aspects of the admin of the car hire, and having used you in the past and been very happy with the service I have received I am left feeling a little disappointed. " I booked a Ford Focus rated as an intermediate car but received a polo sedan which is an economy car. The assistant said that they had stopped offering the focus and if I didn't like the alternative I should phone their head office. I could have rented the polo sedan at half the price elsewhere. I filled up at the BP airport garage on my return and Their invoice which I received 2 days later charged me 45 rand for petrol. They took a deposit of 3000 rand straight away on the first day of hire and now 5 days after the hire have not returned it. Other companies take a card authorisation for the deposit just in case any charges become due later. "

Firstly I am most unhappy about the admin charge as if they refuel every return rental then everybody will have to pay this charge but I am furious about the fuel charge as I returned the car full. I only travelled 261kms in total. I filled up with petrol just before reaching the airport and this was the only time I had put fuel in the car throughout the whole rental because I had travelled so few kilometres. I paid R239 so there is no way I should have been charged a further R261.98 by First. I would appreciate your help in recovering this cost. This is totally unacceptable behaviour by a car rental company. "

" On the whole the rental was good. The staff friendly and the car was as you'd expect for its kms and that its a rental. My husband did have to add a few observations of dents and scratches at collection, but nothing serious. My dissatisfaction comes from the "fuel fee" added at drop off. Even though we filled TO THE BRIM at the Engen fuel stop at Johannesburg Airport and drove the less than 1km back to the drop point, First none the less add two litres of fuel to our bill plus a fuelling fee. We queried this and was told that it is standard practice for them to add even more fuel (even though they then have to drive it back to their collection point (1km) and use that fuel up!!) and then charge us a fee for doing so. What is the point of a full-to-full condition if they are going to charge us anyway?? Each car they makes an extra profit - only one or two ££s but a bit of a rip-off. Next time we will just return the car empty and let them put themselves out to fill it up again - we will be charged in any event!! The e-Tag in the car didn't work, so we paid cash (and queued) at each toll. "

And i met several other travelers that had Nissan Almera from First Car... Secondly: I had to pay (= mandatory order) of ZAR3000 - ok. I've now received a refund of ZAR2330.68. What was the amount of ZAR669.32 used for?? Was it for toll on the N 2?? (went through that 3 times). Or was it also for petrol?? If that's the case, I would be very unhappy, as there was a note in large and colourful note hanging from the rear mirror saying "return vehicle empty"!!! Can you please explain that!!! Furthermore, our Suzuki Baleno had some sticky tape applied to little side spaces (for coins or small objects) - that doesn't really make a very good impression "

" When I made the booking (6 months prior to travel) i requested an infant seat and a toddler car seat. Upon arrival at Cape Town International we were told that this was subject to availability and that no infant seat was available. This was the case for another couple just ahead of us in the queue. I find this entirely unsatisfactory and poor service. It is illegal to travel with babies out of car seats and when you travel across the world, you are at the mercy of the car hire company to assist. When making such a booking so far in advance, I would expect arrangements to be made to provide the required equipment. Instead the staff at the desk could offer no help or solution and in the end we had to purchase a car seat over there. This really is unacceptable. "

Our children bought SIM cards to get over this issue. On returning the vehicle the desk staff on referring to the manager in the back office who did not come out to see me said that they could not offer a refund and i had to refer to Customer Service. Great!! Because I had no n more help I wrote on the accident and incident form that the 12v power supply in the central dash did not work so we could not use the sat nav I paid for and still await a refund Also we wanted a 8 seat vehicle with windows that opened in the rear to allow us to take photos. we did not get this, and were let down. "

" After my previous rental with First Car they tried to charge me for a new windscreen even though the car condition report prior to the rental showed a chip in the windscreen from which a crack formed. After referring First Car to the original car condition report the reversed the debit on my credit card, apologised, and promised a better service for my next rental. On my arrival in Durban the staff had no record on their system of the problem experienced with my previous rental and as they claimed they did not have the Toyota Etios at the depot they could only offer alternatives. Later in the car park I saw a Toyota Etios there, but the attendant told me that it was already ordered, I could only assume that cars booked through your company were not given the same service as direct bookings with their company. I had eventually agreed to take a Suzuki Swift but after spending time checking the condition report, loading suitcases I found the radio didn't work, so I had to start the check out from the beginning and was only offered a Ford Figo with over 35,000 Km and multiple defects marked on the body and only 3mm of tread left on all tyres. I have been using First Car Rentals in Durban for several years now but from the reception area it would appear that First Car has now become part of Sixt car hire and can only assume that this change in ownership has resulted in the problems I have experienced with my last two rentals with the through your company. "

Fast, efficient and actually had the car ready for us when we arrived - Note to others - hertz did not and we waited half an hour after they had processed us. First Car also had a computer screen that we could see and fill in at the same time as the counter staff. No bumps, scrapes and full tank, etc. Pleasing that First Car returned R3000 retainer less what? Assume it was for toll fees? You need to review whole process from start to finish. e.g. Why not send copies of driving licence, passport and driving licence through your booking facilities securely when choosing the car so all they have too do their end in validate every thing is correct rather than queuing endlessly because they have to photocopy everything. These were reported but we did not get any help "

The only downfall & inconvenience I experienced was about the last 2 weeks of rental, whereby the car was meant to be returned back for a service but they did not have a replacement car! I also reported that the in car charging point was not working, so, our mobile phones could not be charged at all, when we were out & about in a car! Also the inconvenience we encountered was the tyres, since day 1 of taking the vehicle, they were displaying "low tyre pressure". & when I let the office know, they said it was due to the weather! So, the tyres needed pumping every now & then throughout the rental period. "

The so called "upgrade" was an uncomfortable and cheap Toyota Quantum, admittedly with more seats, but no frills and no power in the engine or suspension. It had 97000 kms on the clock so well used. " Little disappointed with First Car. When we got there we had pre ordered a child seat, but they only had one size available, which is ridiculous when they don't know the age of the baby (8 months in this case), so we had to make do with the seat they had as they had no others. Also, the car was quite old, had done 30,000 km. When getting the car, noticed a large dent in the front bumper which had not been put on the sheet so had to go back to office to report it and get pre hire sheet changed. Bit surprised they would hire out a car with a big dent in it! "

It took about 200 rand to fill up car from less than one quarter full to full during my rental. There was one Square ( out of 8 used) between my last fill and return to first car rental, so i rather doubt that what they charged is actually correct, but as they don't provide any proof but just deduct an amount i doubt one can ever check. I prefer leaving the car full, full at the airport garage but they requested not to do that. I realise it isn't much money, but it is the Principle that counts. "

" Several days after returning vehicle fuel deducted from my deposit even though returned full. I filled the car up at the airport petrol station...this also happened with my previous 1st car rental and also last month with a colleague. I supplied a fuel receipt however 1st just take money without providing any evidence that they put fuel in the car. Having worked previously as a car rental manager i believe this to be a scam by the branch in Cape Town. Also, instead of returning my R3000 deposit, 1st took a further R3000 rand which they denied even after the bank confirmed that the additional amount had been taken. I will not use 1st again or recommend to anyone. They give a bad name to other car rental companies who act fairly to customers. I suggest auto Europe look into this before recommending 1st to customers. "

Now I need to wait 7 - 14 days for my deposit to be refunded and additional to that a R500 valet fee is charged for sand, wgich was not specified initially prior to collection.
