They were a real pain with regard to insurance in a threatening way! and so I normally choose Sicily by car (auto Europa) or the cheaper partner companies owned by hertz or avis. "

It did not however have the boot capacity we needed for five people and was lower to the road. I was then offered a Nissan X-Trail which I have driven before and have the same reservations. A RAV4 was then returned and though it was not 100% clean, I took it. I am glad I held out for the car I had booked as it did have the required boot space, was comfortable and economical. " I hired what was advertised as a Toyota Rav 4 4x2 via Hertz South Africa from your web site. Toyota RAV 4 models in South Africa for a 4x2 list a 2.0 Ltr GX Auto - which is what i was expecting. The Hertz South Africa web site it lists the Renault Kadjar and Nissan Qashqai as being "or similar" so I accept that if a Rav 4 is not available then an alternative car can be provided by the hire company which is clear when booking. What I got was a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated Toyota Rush. Being from the UK I had not heard of a Rush and the Rush (which are made by Diahatsu and is a much cheaper car) but is is very similar in appearance to the Rav 4 and is a 4x2 vehicle. It was only on driving the car that I found it quite under powered. It is really a town car and not suitable for longer distance driving (no cruise control), its pick up on the motorway and faster roads is poor and it does not cope with steep gradients - we actually turned round and headed back on one of our trips as the vehicle could only crawl up one hill and the engine was getting really hot - and this was on a tarred public road where other older vehicles were passing us at speed. The lack of pick up on the motorway It does not really like to cruise much above 110 Km per hour and given the SA roads are often 120 Km per hour and many people drive much faster than this made driving the Rush on these roads far more stressful than it should have been. I have seen other car web sites that differentiate between a RAV 4 and a Rush - which I think is worth considering. You may wish to raise this with Hertz SA as they do not even advertise the Rush. It is likely I will be heading to SA again and looking at car hire and therefore wish to avoid the Toyota RAV4 / Rush issue and Hertz in the future. As you can tell - I was not impressed with my hire car this time around - however, I hope that this feedback is useful. "

" We have been charged for damage to the windscreen which we were not responsible for. When we picked up the car we did not check under the wipers, on return the guy went and lifted up the wipers and noted the damage and did not look anywhere else on the car for other damage. I have no doubt they do this with every customer and make plenty of money from it. We have not received an invoice or any other contact from Hertz to inform us of this charge (only appeared on credit card statement) Needless to say we will never use Hertz ever again. "

How could the Jo'burg office give me a car for a month, which was scheduled to be returned to a supplier in two weeks time. Was it not flagged for this? Gross inefficiency in my view. On my returning the second vehicle things were much mor efficient and I received an apology. "

" When I arrived at the Hetz desk at CT airport, the representative tried to fob me off with a VW Polo. I complained I had specifically requested a Toyota Corolla. So after some time he found me one which was not running especially well, but well enough . After 3-4 days I was contacted by Hertz CT who asked me by email if the car had been serviced and what the mileage was . I was amazed that they had let out a car which they had no idea whether it had been serviced and no record of the mileage. I was astonished and highly concerned about the safe running of the car. Then on return they had the gall to charge me for some unseen damage. I have used Hetz for years and have usually been satisfied . This one was an absolute shocker. I will take my complaint further.If the tyre was a problem they should have been specific in their invoicing , and if there was concern about the servicing of this vehicle then I would ask for the money they have taken without my consent paid back onto my card with immediate effect. "

I had porters carrying my and my wife's luggage luggage, so had walked away then heard the rep calling after m e. So I hurried back , as the porters walked on with my luggage , for him to say there appeared to be some light damage to one of the tyres.I couldn't see what he was talking about and was given the view that it was probably oK . Then he asked me to initial the form , I asked what for and he said simply to acknowledge that he had brought potential tyre damage to my attention . Under duress I signed , and went off to chase my luggage. I have now received a notice on their final invoice of R2,681.01 for "Damage". This I disgraceful behaviour to take from my credit card without any consultation, or even breakdown of what this damage refers to! I feel totally ripped of. this is a very bad feeling! "

" At CPT airport the collection was a nightmare - Hertz said car not ready and it would be 20mins. I reminded them I wanted a Corolla Quest (as boot size is known to hold all our golf equipment); after 50mins they tried to fob us off with a Golf. After 75 mins they produced a Quest which I tried to drive around the car park to where our cases were - the brake pads were gauging out the brake discs; After 90mins we got a Quest that drove ok but LHS indicator was fast ticking (indicates a bulb gone). Drove 500km to George only to find not a bulb gone but the whole rear offside light cluster was inoperative and loose connection could not be found. Took car to Hertz George Airport - within 3mins Leroy Brown had swapped out the paperwork and given us a Corolla Quest unfortunately which was an auto (3 gears so very high revving). During the 55days we found rear n/s door did not work with central locking. Car returned to CPT with petrol tank totally filled 15km away and Hertz charged me R113. "

" Absolutely dreadful. There was a queue of people waiting to pick up their cars even after the paparwork had been completed at the desk, and we had to wait for that as well. They ok so you are arriving, have the flight number and yet there were at least 4 groups whose booked cars were not available. We had to wait a further 40 minutes and the car was only 3/4 full of petrol. Didn't fancy another wait to get that noted so just had to take the hit. Don't bother with hertz they are rubbish. "

I had fully comprehensive insurance, and as such wasn't worried about the condition of the car (although I had not done anything at all to damage the car). When I dropped the car off, the gentleman doing to 'check out', quizzed me about whether or not I had filled up the car. I told him that of course I had, and had drive about 8kms along a motorway to get to the airport. I even showed him my fuel receipt, which he took. I then returned back home, only to receive an invoice saying I'd been charged for fuel! I have called Hertz in Cape Town to find out what is happening, but have just been told I'll be emailed. " When I arrived they tried to take a very high deposit of over £800 Which would not be returned for three weeks. they offered me an alternative whereby they would charge me a small amount of money and four that small fee would reduce the deposit And return it on a much faster time frame Given I didn't have enough money in my account to cover the full deposit I was forced to pay a fee I feel this is very predatory behaviour as once you have just gone off a long flight and I'm tired and need a car you very rarely have little option other than to pay the fee "

Gave me a Toyota Yaris auto (instead of the requested Corolla) which was aweful (underpowered therefore dangerous in Johannesburg traffic). They said that they could get me a Corolla from their depot. I could not wait any longer to get to my appointment. Hertz Johannesburg is terrible. In fairness, Hertz Cape Town is much better but not as good as Bidvest. "

" I tuned up at Johanesberg Airport South Africa and was given the key to a Toyota Corolla which I was pleased with size of the boot as i thought it would be small, this is my only positive for this experience. I was shown to the car which was in a very poorly lit parking space and told to check and confirm the marks on the car where all included on the paper work. The paper work and lines put on the paper showing damaged area where un readable and faint so I checked and found several marks and a rear bumper marked as hanging out . I could not find anyone to agree and sign the paper work, but after several visits to desk had someone sort of agree ,casually and sign paperwork. There where so many marks which I had to use my touch on my phone to see I hoped I had marked the extra ones down and left with the car. On returning the car I was shown to a very, very well lit area ,the lady immediately looked UNDERNEATH the rear bumper and said I had reversed into something and distorted the bumper and picked up that there was a small crack in the wheel hub cover. I had to disagree and had a real job convincing them after three people came and looked that the on hiring the reason the bumper was sticking out on the side was it had been hit before from behind causing this before I had rented it. I felt they went straight to the place on the car and where determined to claim this damage on me . After adimantly refusing there allegations they backed down and considering the poor condition of the car i wrongly presumed that they would not be so picky on return . I will not rent from hertz again "

Road handling was very poor, and the visibility awareness around the car was extremely bad, which then gave me a sense of extreme uneasiness while driving. I was just very disappointed that Hertz had chosen this type of car as part of their rental fleet..... I simply do not know why they made this choice.... " For my last few trips to Cape Town my car has been supplied by Hertz. On every occasion the car has had damage that was not listed on the condition sheet. This necessitates having the sheet updated at the time of handover - an annoying waste of time. This time it was worse than usual. The condition sheet was 'clean', but in fact the car had numerous defects, including defects relating to poor workmanship in respect of a windscreen which had obviously just been replaced. One other point worth mentioning is that the vehicle supplied on this occasion did not have remote central locking with the usual additional feature of automatic locking once one starts driving. In high-crime SA this should be standard. "

" We prepaid. Hertz raised a second rental charge now in dispute. Left JNB we stopped on the highway to check tyres and wheels as there was noise. Found nothing. Days later we saw the o/s front steel rim had been badly bent out of shape, risking a blow-out. The wheel cover was unmarked, covering the fault. The damage could have been fatal. Both front tyres were worn to the legal limit; the rears were low and in the 2nd of a 5 week hire! The passenger air vent was broken preventing it from being adjusted away from the face making refrig use uncomfortable. We changed the car at CPT. The change-over crews acknowledged the issues but weren't particularly concerned with the wheel or other problems. Surprising for Hertz. Is this a franchise? "

On returning the car to the airport there was no fuel station so we had to leave it back with 1/4 tank and have to be charged for the filling although the check in said that they only charge pump fuel cost because of that.
