I told him I would return in an hour rather than pay for an extra days hire. When I returned I told him that I did not want to purchase any additional extras however he signed me up for an additional roadside assistance plan for $200 without getting me to sign or agree to it. He did not bring it to my attention and I only noticed it a few days later. I complained to Hertz Customer Service who investigated and cam back to me a week or so later and voided the charge. "

Waited literally an hour and a half in a queue of 10 people. 2 staff in office, one on gold desk (no better/faster), one handling everyone else, multiple other empty desks. " Even though I was collecting slightly later than expected the process was slow as counter staff were trying to log on to their terminals but gave up and ended up using one terminal which delayed myself and others. They didn't seem to be bothered that there were people waiting. I'm never a fan of collecting from a poorly lit multi-storey as was the case in this instance. The car had been cleaned but the rear window had a sticky substance affected the rear-view which was only apparent later. The bodywork was marked/scratched on nearly. every panel and part of door handle was missing. For a relatively low mileage car it was looking a bit worse for wear. In addition the interior smelled stale and sweaty. The worst part was a safety issue, when we were driving in a heavy downpour on the interstate the windshield wipers were terrible and did little to help visibility. "

" When collecting the car, and I appreciate I was 2hours later than I'd booked, there was no vehicle available and I had to wait 35 mins for Hertz to find one. The car that arrived was a little bigger than I'd booked but that was okay, it also had some damage - dents front, back and on the roof and the shark fin antennae on the roof was sellotaped on. The real issue was when I returned the car, which was to a different office to where I collected it. That office was next to SeaWorld as I was going in there for the day from their opening time at 0900. It turned out that the office I was to return to was closed by Hertz around 2 years ago. I called the numbers that Hertz had given me for the collection and drop off offices but both came back with a 'number does not exist' message so I had to call a Hertz national helpline. They directed me to take the car back to where I had collected it and assured me there would be someone there from 0800 - it was now 0830 and I was due to be at a theme park at 0900. When I got to the new drop off location it was closed and hotel staff said that Hertz do not come in until around 1030. The hotel staff were very helpful and after more failed phone calls from me and them to Hertz, they agreed to take the keys from me and look after the car until the Hertz rep arrived. I then had to get an Uber to take me back to Seaworld. All in, I lost 1.5 hours from my day and the surcharge I paid to return the car to a different location. I also had to pay for the Uber. Hertz sent me an email survey which I completed and confiemed at the end that I wanted someone to contact me about the poor rental experience, but nobody has, "

This was nowhere in the papers which only required valid ids. No solution was offered. We lost all the money of the booking and had a lot of stress with all luggage, no accommodation and no help.either from Autoeurope or Hertz. Calls to Autoeurope were pointless as all they repeated was that we should have cancelled the booking 48 hours later. We ended up going to Enterprise and rented the car with NO issues around documents but this cost us an additional $900. I will continue to request a reimbursement officially "

" Auto Europe are ok, I use the often and for some years. Many of the car rental companies, particularly in the USA are absolutely dreadful and they have a cultural issue where customer service is not anywhere in the desk staff minds. "
" Check in at LAX was absolutely dreadful. The staff are useless, slow, their attitude is not at all customer focused and the overall service is dire. Also, I have been overcharged by the airport staff adding an underage charge on booking in that I didn't notice until later. I am 73 so not really underage! I would advise others to avoid Hertz at LAX and probably everywhere. Terrible experience. "

" Awful. Having been a customer of the Dollar, Buget, Hertz group annually over 27 years. This was the worst. 1) In line for 2hr 10 minutes after a 10 hour flight before being served. Only 4 service agents on. FORD ESCAPE or Similar /Intermediate booked - but no cars of that type available due to high percentage of 'wallk in booking' late returns and extensions. Told to go out to the President Line and chose anything from there. Only three cars on the lot -= 2 Full Size 6 seater 4byx4, one of whick stunk of stale cigarrette smoke and a Tyota midsize Corolla which had clearly just been returned, washed a refuelled and put in the incorectparking lot. In deseperation as I had a 2.hrs 15 minutes drive to Palm Springs. In the well on the driver's side a large pierce of trim had come lose exposing a junction box of wires. I pointed this out when I got to the Exit Booth I pointed this out to the attendant who said it should now stay in poition but it was missing a plastic rivet to hold it securely. On the drive to Palm Springs on the I10 freeway going over a speed hump it came away and was in the way of the brake and accelerator pedal. I had to stop on the hard shoulder. While in Palm Springs I went to the Hertz desk at the airport where a member noted the complaint and logged it on the system. Te car had also nt been cleaned thouroughly as there was rattle coming fom under the front passenger seat caused by two empty beer cans. "

" I'm less likely to recommend Auto Europe to a friend than I was, this is despite me using Auto Europe for many years. Here is the issue. I booked a 'Chevy Tahoe 7 Pax or similar'. Hoping for a Tahoe, on pick-up the Hertz operative assured me in no uncertain terms, I would NEVER get a Tahoe with the booking class Auto Europe sold me which was Hertz L4. Tahoes are a Hertz booking class T. Whilst in general I was OK with the Hyundai I rented, I am interested in your opinion of whether it is OK to sell a customer like me, a 'Chevy Tahoe 7 Pax or similar' when according to Hertz it could never ever ever be a Chevy Tahoe, a Chevy Tahoe was impossible with that booking class. IMO this is a dubious practise, and I may have gone elsewhere as it was a Tahoe I wanted. Please let me know your view. "

" I always use Auto Europe when hiring a car to go abroad, and alwayd recommend you to friends and family. It's always slightly cheaper booking through Auto Europe, instead of going directly through rental companies. The order process is nice and easy, good selection of cars and rental companies, and I've never experienced any issues at all when booking through Auto Europe. "

We'd booked a Tahoe or similar and the counter staff kept telling us the booking codes didn't align and we'd have to have a Nissan Pathfinder, which wouldn't be big enough for our requirements. Had to make a major point about contact law and they eventually rescinded and found a Tahoe for us. Have heard similar stories about Dulles rentals. So my experience is the counter staff are not very reputable or trustworthy. They also pushed to include tolls for a daily charge knowing we were unlikely to be using toll roads. " The car was only a few months old and in very good condition. It had been cleaned inside but the previous hirer was obviously a smoker of weed! This was not obvious at pickup as the smell of the cleaning covered it. However when we returned to the vehicle after being closed for a few hours or overnight the smell of the weed lingered and was still there when we returned the vehicle. The other more serious issue which could have resulted in an injury to the front seat passenger was an injection needle had been left in the passenger door pocket and not removed when cleaned. This could have resulted in the passenger receiving a stabbing injury if they had put their hand into the pocket without looking. I have a photograph I can send you. I passed this information to the staff member we returned the car to at the end of our stay and they told us to report it to yourselves. This should not have been allowed to happen. "

" This comment surrounds the recharging of the EV. The car came with 90% charge which was fine. The vehicle came complete with the emergency charge cable which fitted into a household socket and worked fine albeit slowly. The issue came when out and about and attempting to get a recharge from a recharge station, which proved Impossible. I tried connecting via the appropriate app alas no charge and so had to return the vehicle needing to be charged, at cost to me above that which I may have paid had I been able to recharge at the recharge station. I'm not sure how you could warn prospective hirers of electric vehicles of the potential downfall? "

" We specifically asked for a car suitable to be driven in winter conditions in the mountains as we went on a winter sport holiday. We checked with Auto Europe and with Hertz in advance of collecting the car and we were assured all would be fine using all season tyres. We found that on many occasions around the Rocky Mountain National Park and the ski resorts the Highway authorities insist on you either having winter tyres or you need to use a snow chain. Winter tyres were not available as all Hertz rental cars appear to be on all season tyres. The use of snow chains are not permitted on their rental cars either leaving you with a rental car that is not fit for purpose in winter. Even leaving the house in town was impossible as the roads in Boulder were not cleared of ice and snow. Our all season tyres skidded constantly. Cars with winter tyres or snow chains had no problem getting out and about. When this issue was raised with your reservation office we felt not being understood and fobbed off. We used your service last summer and were very pleased; in fact we recommended you to our friends who specifically went with you because of our experience. This time we cannot recommend your service as fundamentally your / Hertz rental cars are not fit for purpose in winter. "

A small sticker somewhere would address that. One other issue is that we seem to have an additional charge on our bill of £150 (£180 with tax) that we don't know what it's for. " I have no complaints about autoeurope apart from when i picked the car up my voucher clearly stated that i could have 2 other people named as drivers included in my contract. Hertz said they did not do that there and wanted to charge me so i never bothered putting my wife on the rental. "
" After a week I got a replacement car because of a slow puncture. I had been putting air into the tyre and I popped into the office to tell them and they changed the car which I never requested. The car I got, it's passenger side front indicator didn't work I went back to the office the following week to tell them but I was told there were no cars available to swap out. I was assured I'd get a phone call in the next 2-3 days to get it changed. The call never came so I called back and was told that there were still no cars to swap out with. I spent the next 3 weeks running about with a car with no working front indicator and still no phone call. I got a puncture the day before the end of the rental and the car got changed no problem. I drove approx 3500 miles during my rental and thought it a bit irresponsible for them to have me running about with a non working indicator "

" We arrived at the Hertz desk located within the Marriott hotel Tampa, to be told that car we had booked wasn't available (we required a 7 seat mini van to transport our party plus luggage), we were supplied with a vehicle to get us there and told we would need to go to the desk at Tampa airport to swap over to one we had paid for and that this had been arranged with the counter staff at TPA Named Carlos, we were told NOT to leave the keys in the car and to take them directly to the desk on level 4. On arrival at the desk on level 4, i tried to explain to the Hertz rep what i had been told, he didn't even look at me just said," vehicle exchanges were on L2, I repeated the instructions i had been told by the chap at the Marriott to again be told to go back down to L2. Back to L2 at the desk, nobody knew Carlos! no one knew of our arrival and no vehicles were available!! (Not sure the agent at the Marriott actually spoke to anyone just made out he did). Then my wife heard our name mentioned by another member of staff at the opposite end of the counter, she asked if they knew about our situation, to which she was rudely replied to, stating that we hadn't left the keys in the car we returned, we tried to explain we had been told not to leave them and showed her I still had them with me & would be leaving them here once i had the replacement vehicle, only to be threatened with a $250 fine & instructed to "go put them in the car"! If it wasn't for 2 other employees that went out of their way, we wouldn't have got a vehicle at all, they searched the garage, but couldn't find anything, then I noticed one being returned, asked if that was one of theirs and they rushed over to check, luckily it was and they took it away to be cleaned and it was brought to us within about 40 minutes. Best part of a day of our holiday wasted!! "

" Vehicle broke down with a key fob communication problem in a very remote area. No mobile phone coverage. I managed eventually to get the vehicle to stay running and drive to the nearest town where I was able to use a phone in a general store to call Hertz breakdown number. I explained that there were all sorts of error messages on the dashboard relating to the key fob and the car didn't start etc etc. They told me to drive to the nearest Hertz in Hilo, nearly an hour's drive away where I would receive a different type of car. I managed to buy a battery for the key fob in Hilo and fix the problem myself at my own time and expense. They showed no intention of coming to help me and my family. They didn't even have a spare battery for the fob. We lost the last day of our holiday in this area thanks to a defective vehicle. Until the point of initial failure the car showed no symptoms or error messages. I would like Hertz to provide decent compensation for the lost time, out of pocket expenses and my time repairing their defective vehicle. They even wanted me to fill the tank whilst I was involved in the breakdown scenario if I got another vehicle despite the fact that I had prepaid for the tank of fuel. "

" I traditionally rent a car in Florida for 2-3 months a year whilst I visit my boat. I am British so I usually book through a European agency as I wish to benefit from European rental terms. This year I thought I would try Hertz as the supplier. Everything was fine except for an incorrect billing of a rental extension. I wrote to you about this 5 days ago. To shed a bit more light on the matter, I should explain that I was put to enormous inconvenience as my third extension took the rental period over 60 days and I was required to visit a rental station well out of my way to effect this. It appears your are not properly set up for this, but nobody had the forethought to mention it at the time of my second extension. It took Tallahassee more than 50mins to process this as they were very unsure of the procedure. I did point out to them the over billing error but they countered that that was all the computer allowed them to do and I should take it up with Tampa being my return location. This I have done, and in writing. As I haven't had the courtesy of a reply from anyone, I will in the next day or so apply to American Express for a charge back. Neither of us really want this, so may I suggest you attend to the matter with some despatch. You have no authorisation from me in regard to these which in any event don't apply as this is an all inclusive International contract. However, when arriving at the Hertz desk i was told I had no breakdown cover at all and was aggressively upsold roadside assistance. In fact, the desk clerk even told me that he wouldn't undertake the trip i was on without the extra insurance which was (a) very pressuring and (b) displays a somewhat lack of faith in the reliability of their vehicles. I had taken my own GPS with me and after trying 3 different cars i finally found one that could take it and connect with. This car was very dirty and had not been cleaned it had Utah plates and was a mess even to guy at drop off agreed it was bad and that it should have not been put out for use in that condition. We could not even get both our suitcases in the back and spent the whole trip with the rear seats folded down with our cases on show .It obviously hadn't been cleaned properly as the seats has dirt and grime in the creases and dirty marks on the screen pillar .Its the highest mileage rental I've ever had by far (48200 miles already on the clock , Previous highest I think was about 7000 miles with Alamo) It had 50% oil life left (before a service was due ) which considering we had rented it for 9 weeks meant after just over 3 weeks it constantly kept showing " change oil" on starting every time . I would not rent with Hertz again . "

The vehicle was not pre cleaned and had sustained prior damage which they were then trying to say we did on return. It was only when they realised that I had paid for additional package covering all excess, towing, tyres, windscreen, lost keys etc that they eased off the damage as there really no financial gain in trying to pin it on us. " The opening hours for the Hertz pickup location were incorrect on our booking. Therefore we arrived after the Hertz in question had closed and were unable to pick up the car for the first three days! This was not a pleasant start to our honeymoon and we felt very angry that we were left without means of transport. Originally our booking was for 4pm but the form sent by email to us by Auto Europe specified a 6pm closing so at 5pm when we realised that we were running late (our flight was delayed) we called Hertz Stapleton to warn them we were late and were unable to get through to them. We arrived just after 5:30 and they were already shut so there was no way to pick up our car. "

I did pay $189 for my son in law to drive the car and $56 for a full tank of fuel to save me refilling the tank before returning the vehicle. " The experience of dealing with the staff and collection/drop off procedures at LAX was very efficient. My only issue was the vehicle allocated was not the size or category that I expected. When I made my AutoEurope selection the vehicle was described as a Nissan Rogue (European equivalent is X-Trail model) or equivalent. Obviously the specific model may not be the same as I understand very well it is the category that matters. When I got to the vehicle location I found we had a Buick Encore (European equivalent is Vauxhall Mokka). There is no way this is the same category as an X-Trail, however if the Hertz system does link them, they are grouping very different sized vehicles together. Of course, I could have gone back and queried this, however after a 12 hour flight and waiting at the desk which was far away from the vehicle, I had no desire to repeat the process, so I had to accept it. The counter staff were very friendly and not aggressive at all, unfortunately during the heck in process they did not mention the vehicle being allocated, nor did I question it, as I trusted them to make the right decision. Obviously, next time I will not make this mistake with Hertz if I use them again. "

However I had sent a money order to pay for the toll, which was at Seidel road, at exit 11 on April 20th around 10.30. So I told the lady about that. I also called the company that takes care of the tolls for Hertz. - still I received some penalty for that, although I had paid all I was supposed to pay. Since it was a low amount, I did not do anything more about it, not worth it. It was 7,70 USD. - additional driver could not be added afterwards, without going to the office, and then it had to be for all of the rental time, but I could not choose some five next days. So all over, I was not so happy with the rental with Hertz. "

" Unfortunately the experience with Hertz/Auto Europe wasn't a particularly good one. We arrived at the airport and spoke to the Auto Europe representative via the phone they were very unhelpful and had very few details on the rental at one point tell me and my family we would have to get a cab over to Hertz to pick up the car. Thankfully the information desk was more helpful and directed us to where we could pick up the courtesy shuttle bus. Upon arrival at Hertz we were dealt with very quickly by a gentleman call John who seemed to be on commission as was trying to upsell from the get go. 1. First of all he said that the car we had ordered (Ford Expedition) had all been recalled because of a fault so offered us a alternative not a problem but then said that it didn't come with a sat nav so would have to hire this separately for 17USD per day. He also said that we wouldn't all fit in the car (4 adults and 1 child)... (my brother hired a ford Expedition from one of your competitors and they all fitted in, it hadn't been recalled and it cam with an inbuilt sat nav) 2. He then asked me if I wanted premium roadside assistance which I confirmed that I didn't want and the standard would be sufficient. I didn't realise that premium had been added to the bill regardless and when I tried to call twice to Hertz was left waiting for a operator for 15 minutes (after which time I gave up due to the cost of the phone call) to have this removed 3. With the false stories of being told the car wouldn't accommodate us all and that the replacement didn't have sat nav built in we went for the upgrade at $30 per day. 4. The fuel I was told was the best price on the market $4.19 per gallon which I declined and the next block gasoline was $3.89 per gallon 5. Despite me having a zero excess i was also charged a further $200 to my account which Im still yet to have refunded and wasnt explained about the charge. Obviously I was tired after my flight and keen to get on the road so was easy prey I suspect for salemen trying to increase their commission. "

" I was not offered any discount as a result of not having the vehicle or a comparable vehicle to the one I booked available though I was offered a different Jeep which would have quadrupled the cost of my hire . This price increase was only made apparent at the point at which i was handed my voucher! People are tired and vulnerable at the end of long haul flights. More care needs to be taken to avoid the risk of overcharging! "
