However, the experience quickly took a negative turn when I was unexpectedly asked to pay an additional €150 for insurance. I explained that my booking already included full insurance coverage (this was done all at the moment of the booking on your website). At that point, the staff member's attitude shifted noticeably. She informed me, in a rather abrupt and dismissive manner, that the insurance I had was not affiliated with Smart Mobility and was therefore irrelevant. I was told that in the event of any incident, I would be required to pay to Smart Mobility directly and claim reimbursement independently from your insurance provider. I was then presented with a choice: either pay the additional insurance fee, or leave a €2500 deposit with a €500 excess in case of any incident. I felt pressured into accepting these terms, as I was told I would not receive the car otherwise. This left me feeling misled, particularly as none of these conditions were made clear at the time of booking. Furthermore, the car itself was below expectations. It exhibited brake issues, and the engine struggled to manage basic inclines, which raised safety concerns throughout our journey, however to avoid more bad moments with my children I did not go back to speak with the staff at Smart Mobility. Called roadside assistance and they wanted to charge us €170, which was unacceptable as it wasn't our fault that we couldn't change it(this service is sub-contracted). We managed to replace it with the help from family. We found that the tyre was worn down to the steel, hence why it flattened. Next day we went to the airport counter. We were given a replacement car with no issues. They only had an upgrade car and they provided us with it with no hesitation. "

" I have returned home to find that Smart Car Rentals have charged me 100 EUR for "abandoning" the vehicle. The vehicle was not abandoned. The vehicle was left in the Smart Car Rentals parking garage with the keys posted in the safe deposit box which is exactly what the customer services representative told me to do when I asked about leaving the car out of hours. I have been in touch with the complaints department but they are amendment that the charge is fair despite the vehicle being returned to them on time and as directed. I have had to resort to doing a chargeback through my card provider. It is my opinion that this car hire company are crooks who are using spurious means to extract even more money out of unsuspecting customers. I will not be using them in future. "

" Insurance was very misleading, and on initial inspection of the vehicle which we conducted on our own with no rep present, we were provided with 5 photos of previous minor damages and after we conducted a thorough inspection which took us an hour we provided 20 Photographs of other damages not recorded. We also conducted the inspection in a dark area with no lighting , however when we dropped the car off after hire the agent attended with a flash light to inspect if there were any further damages. Theses issues were stressful ful and because of the misleading insurance coverage made every car journey a stress full experience. "

" received a very bashed up car, steering wheel shaked. Air con knob not working which was Ok, as it was a cheap rental that had to do low miles around Malta. The worst part was the last check at the end though. Even if the car was really bashed up before the rental, it was checked meticulously for nearly 10 minutes with a head torch to see if I had made any damages (which I hadn't). It was quite stressful, not a very nice experience to be honest. I will try and avoid this company for future rentals. I get the impression that they try and make money from little dents and extra cover. "

" I was about to email your customer services of my experience. Firstly, I would like to add that when I handed my license to the person at the desk,he said my license expires at the end of the day , which means it was still valid for the collection . I went online to find that I could renew it immediately online and the license would be fine . I also showed the the person and he said he would have to call his manager, while this was happening i filled in the online form which was straight forward within minutes and showed him proof that I had a new licence which actually arrived at my home address within 3 days ( received before I returned back to the Uk ) . He said that the only way I could hire the vehicle was to take the full insurance with them , explained to him how does that make a difference if you are saying my license is not valid , he replied if anything happens to the vehicle we are covered !! Couldn't understand, so they are letting me drive but without a valid license, absolutely absurd!! He showed proof that my online application was approved and also states that I'm allowed to to drive , he wasn't having it , all he said was if you take the full insurance at 135 Euros I could take the car . They obviously knew that i couldn't do anything and took advantage. The full Cover if required when taking the car was originally £29.50, how the got 135 euros was rediculous, the hire of the vehicle was only £40 !! Plus on top of this , when I went to the vehicle it has damage on nearly every panel apart from the roof, the passenger side door couldn't be opened from the outside , the man said don't worry about the damage as I have full cover , that wasn't the point , I had to attend a wedding in a car that looked bad , even previous damage that had been repaired badly could be seen, plus covered in Sciclybycar stickers. Then once o actually got in the car the management light was on and said engine failure , the man said don't worry. Then at night I could see a thing when a on coming car was coming towards me as the internal screen was so dirty , I had to clean it when I got back to the hotel and asked them for something to clean the screen with . I have hired multiple cars through yourselves and this I must say was the worst . Ps I would like to add that I also have my own private excess refund and the company didn't car about that either . Extra insurance that cost me nearly 4 times this original hire cost and the car was an old banger that had nearly 54k on the clock. Ps the steering wheel was also not central, the car pulled to the left and the tyres where very close to the legal limit, worn on one side obviously due to the geometry out . "

" Upon arrival I was informed I hadn't put my flight number on the booking and the car I ordered wasn't available. The member of staff was polite and said for £22 per day increase they had a station wagon. Within 10mins of driving the engine warning light came on and it required 'ad blue'. I called the office and was told keep driving and it will be sorted when off hired. The vehicle had covered 46,000 miles and was in adequate condition. When returning the vehicle, I hadnt time to fill the fuel and have been charged close to £70 including an admin cost for about £15 at most of fuel. I was also told my £780 deposit won't be returned for around 2 weeks in case of speeding fines, if I had known this in advance I would not have booked. I have yet to get my deposit back and trust it is returned without problem. "

" The key USP for me of the AE service (which I have used several times previously for holiday car hires in several countries) is the inclusive policy for the refund of any damage excesses - I have never had to make use of it, but it offers great peace of mind and eases the collection process greatly, and I have mentioned to numerous family and friends. " Collection and return both took longer than we had hoped for - not least because when we had had the car OK'd after the rental period, we were also called back in to the office as 'the system' had not apparently recorded the credit card details or email address given when picking up the card (despite the rental agreement safely arriving at the e-mail address almost immediately). We had to give both again in order for the c€1900 're-authorisation' to be released from the card. I was promised a speedy e-mail confirming that had been done, and the value of the 2nd driver charge, but even almost four days later, no email has arrived and checking my credit card online nothing shows regarding the 2nd driver charge. The numerous scratches and dents were well noted as we picked it up, but the odometer showed over 34,000km despite the small size of Malta - together suggesting a car that was several years old and what one might expect from Budget rather than Avis, but for which we paid Avis rates. When collecting the car I was advised that the 2nd driver charge is waived for Avid Preferred member and, whilst I had registered as such in November 2021, the office could find no record of it on 'the system'. For information, my Preferred Customer Number is 8FN93V - sadly I did not have it with me and so was charged for the 2nd driver. Might you be able to rectify this? "

When I raised this with the person who gave us the car he just said 'It will be OK' which I really new it wasn't, and should have refused the car in hindsight. The car had very little power in the higher gears and regularly had to be put in first gear to climb gradients. As it happens we managed relatively well for the 2 weeks we had the car, but I think you should be aware of the condition of vehicles they are providing. As I have said I should have refused the car but was of the opinion that another car may be in the same condition. Again I should really have refused to take the car, but after a long journey we just wanted to get to our accommodation. I am happy to provide photos of the display should you require them showing the fault lights. They were all amber lights, and I know from experience that this is not particularly a problem, but I believe they did affect the performance and they should have been rectified by the company. "

" We are renting vehicles on a regular basis in many different countries in Europe and abroad over the past 20 years. This was the worst experience we ever encountered. We had a long waiting time at the pick-up - this can happen, but 5(!) customer service people were present at the branch, but only two of them were actually doing them job in helping people to check in. The vehicle we received was the worst car I ever drove. There was damage all over it and some parts were missing or obviously replaced, There was evidence that this car has had serious damage, which looked like it has had an accident in the past. The tires were run off on the inside and this would definitely be illegal to drive at least in other EU countries. The worst thing though was that the alignment and the power steering were completely out of order. The front axe wheels were not aligned at all and the car and the steering wheel were shaking when driving. When we returned the car we told the costumer service person about the problems with the car. Unfortunately he took this personal, although we said nothing bad to him. He told me I was making 'trouble'. You can be assured that I will not make any 'trouble' anymore and will never rent a car from Sicily by car. By the way - we saw a lot of cars on the islands that looked like ours. "

So the day I came to drop off the car the person can't find the car with the reg number in the day's drop-off list, because I have been given the wrong car by the counter while picking it up. So finally the guy asked me to give him the reservation number to find the information and found I have been driving the wrong car for the whole trip, the guy nicely manages to update the reg info but can't save it as the car was on my name given to someone else. So the overall Europcar experience in Malta is a real mess. "

The member of staff had gone so we had to wait 15 minutes for his return. He charged us 18 Euros for being over an hour late. I would have been more inclined to accept this if we didn't have to wait 15 minutes for him to come back. He was rushed and unhelpful. We requested Satnav but they didn't have any. When returning car had to wait 15 minutes stood in car park for another member of staff to check the car over. The car itself was not in the greatest condition. Dents, broken wing mirror cover and scratches. Engine sounded like it needed a tune-up and I fed this back when car was checked. Would not use again "

Staff were very helpful at pick-up although directions were to collect from the Cruise Terminal which is very inaccessible. After making contact through one of security people there, and a 40 minute wait outside, we were picked up and taken to a central Avis/Budget office which was easy to locate. We lost an hour of our day through this. Why not instruct to collect from there? We were told that the car would be collected from our hotel and this was convenient. However, even after waiting in for the collection, staff made no contact with us so no handover was possible. This prevented contact and the certainty of recording that we had caused no further damage. NO FINAL RECEIPT WAS SENT THAT DAY so the only way I could be assured the collection had taken place and no charges would be made was the £1500 block being lifted from my credit card. This is wholly unacceptable practice. Although it was Christmas Eve, the collection was timed for 11.00 hrs so plenty of time to complete the admin. "

" I hired a car through Target. I was picked up from the airport and driven to a location on the outskirts in a residential area. The office was in a garage which felt a little odd but i went with is as they seemed friendly. I signed paperwork and was told all the other information would be in the car which stupidly i didn't check. The car was pretty crap and not in the best condition and two days into my trip the tyre actually severely ripped on the dual carriageway and as i went into a tunnel i had to pull in to the hard shoulder with my hazard lights on. I assess the tyre and it was not driveable. I chaecked the glove box for the roadside assistance information but there was no paperwork anywhere!!!! I had no idea of the roadside assistance details and on checking all my paperwork this was not provided anywhere at all. I went to the boot to get the triangle and other legally required things when you leave a car but again these were missing!!!! We were in a dangerous location we moved out of the tunnel and left the car. I tried calling Target but there was no reply to my calls. I tried about 20 times in total as well as text and Whatsapp messages. At this point it was 3:30pm. We were at this point sat in 30 degree heat with no water or help. I called Auto Europe who told me they couldn't get hold of Target either but would email them and they would call me back within 20 minutes. I called Auto Europe again 40 minutes later to say i hadn't heard from Target, after holding for 10 minutes to get through he said they had a number and would transfer me. The number was the old number and immediately went dead. I immediately called back and again after waiting for 10 minutes got through to Auto Europe and was told it had "been escalated to their supervisor". At this point i was severely dehydrated on a motorway and had been over two hours in the heat. I explained this but was told the lady was in Portugal and it was hot in the office too! not at all helpful or necessary! i asked what was being done and what i should do and was told to WAIT! I was given no time they would contact me and no idea of a solution. I decided to see at this point if i could find a solution myself as no help was coming and no one seemed to care at all. I LUCKILY found a tyre garage not too far and he kindly told me if i could drive it slowly to him he would change it for a spare he had in the shop. I carefully got back in the car and after some time managed to get it to him. On returning to my hotel at 6:30pm I called Auto Europe again and recounted what happened to the guy on the phone. He said an email had just come in and he had a "new number for target" and he called and there was a three way conversation on this in which I was told he had phone problems. No one seemed overly bothered i had been sat on a road for three hours and the apology was poor to non existent. I insisted that i was provided with details of the roadside assistance and he text me a mobile number!! Nothing else was provided. When i asked what to do whwen retunring the car i was told to take a picture of the location and leave the car open with the key in the glove box. This summed it up for me, the car was so crap no one would want to steal it so who cares! I have never received such a lack of compassion or understanding from a company before and when asking for help from 4 people would have expected basic information on the Target's processes, insurances and assistance to be available to your company as a matter of due diligence as I BOOKED THROUGH YOU!. I have filed a complaint with customer services and still await a response on this. When we finally managed to get our car, we were unpleasantly surprised to understand that we could not use my Amex, which was the card I used to pay Auto Europe in the first place, and were made to pay over £100 for extra coverage that we did not need, in order to be able to use our debit card. We do not own another credit card and at no point during the booking process was this clearly explained to us. Thirdly, when we called your head office for assistance, we were abruptly told that there was nothing to be done and if we wanted to rent the car we had to pay extra. At this point we requested to be made aware of the complaints procedure and have been completely ignored since. I trust you record your calls and would like to know why this request was not dealt with immediately. Lastly, when returning the car, we were told to simply return the keys and we were not given the option to conduct a check alongside the office. This, once again, is completely unprofessional and we'd like to know the reason for it. I look forward to somebody getting in contact with us by COP this week at the latest or I'll be seeking other ways to take this complaint further. "

" It got worse because after faffing about for an hour and using other methods to securec the deposit when we return the car despite calling both of their numbers on 5 occasions over a 15 minute period when we kept driving round the airport nobody picked up. I therefore had to leave it outside and go inside to their office before a very pleasant gentleman Giles came downstairs and after saying that the car was still immaculate said I would have to pay some extra because there's only 1 bar not 2 on the petrol. This was incorrect because when I parked Was definitely 2 bars. He explained that sometimes if the car switched on and off if it was borderline it might drop to the other side. I said not my problem I should've answered the phone I kept driving the airport but to cut a long story short we drove off the airport and I put €5 petrol in even though I had to withdraw the money from cashpoint machine and it cost me a lot more. I must say Giles was helpful in accompanying me unlike all the other staff we encountered who didn't care. I would also add that when we left the airport it dropped to 1 bar almost immediately anyway plus the remote key fob did not work. It was a good job we arrived at the airport early as this whole process took at least 30 minutes and we had to rush through after grabbing a drink but no duty-free. They delayed us by one hour at the start holiday and made the return journey unpleasant. "

I had no help from AutoEurope on that day to understand why they refused the full insurance pre-paid through AutoEurope and why the blocked and charged extra money on my card. Customer service was unable to help as their system was down and even though they said to call on Monday (3 days later the first rental day) to have further assistance with my query I was still unable to receive any answer as their system was still down! On the day I felt obliged to purchase Hertz full insurance as the cars were all heavily scratched to say the least! Plus they made very clear that the tiniest scratch would result in Euro 1200 surcharge. They didn't help in checking the car and it was very dark, I seriously would have to spend the night counting how many scratches the car had and still be in fear to miss some. No paper was provided to sign the existing damages and had to refuse the first car they took in as it was unsafe to drive! "

Every single panel on the vehicle was damaged, bumpers screwed as a repair, bold tyre, wiper blades had perished. Whilst I appreciated that the car would be in that group of vehicles what I actually got was a Fiat Panda, which I could have booked for a lower price. I specifically wanted to avoid the Panda because I know from experience that is is very underpowered. This was certainly the case with the car I received and consequently it struggled with the hilly roads on Malta and Gozo. However, the rest of the customer service was very good. I have used Europcar several times and will probably continue to do so. "

" Pick-up was extremely slow. There were only five others in line, but it still took an hour, since there was 10+ minutes of typing and faffing about with payments. All other car rental counters in the airport had no lines at all. The car was extremely basic, the engine struggled with even the modest hills on Malta, and it was generally in a very worn condition (66,000 km on the odometer). This is the kind of car I might expect from "Firefly", but not from main-brand Hertz. "

When asked what time we were bringing the car back we were told that they were only from 8am to 8pm but there was no mention of this on the booking and consequently we would of had to pay an extra 48 euros. Also we had to return the car because there was problems with. The car was let out with low tyres service warning and it wasn't explained that it was a manual and automatic. We had to return the car a day early as we were not prepared to pay the 48 euros and therefore could not use the car on our last evening and next morning and had to get a taxi to the airport which incidentally only cost 20 euros! Will never use this company again!! "

The only comment I made to the counter staff, which is very IMPORTANT, is the practice of using a paper copier to pick all the details on my credit card, including the full card number. If the staff stores the 3-digit number at the back of it, it means he/sher can fraudulently use my card. That is an encouragement of fraud on your customers' credit cards and should be discontinued. " Poor customer service. I booked and prepaid the car to collect in the morning. We decided to have a walk and lunch before collecting it. I called Europcar locally as a courtesy to let them know but no reply. I called Auto Europe in the UK to ask them to pass on the message. I was told I would lose the booking, that collection more than 2 hours after the booking was not allowed. This was not indicated at time of booking and i had prepaid so should be free to pick up the car when I like. The Auto Europe rep was adamant I would lose the booking. I asked to be transferred to Europcar and was told as was obvious that it was no problem to collect the car later. Auto Europe rep was misinformed and unhelpful. "

" Everything was quite efficient but lots of documents to sign. There was a sheet of charges that related to damage to the car which included a a 150 euro charge for "Damage Administration" and a subsequent charge of 40 euros for the car unavailability. So replacing something like a damaged hubcap would cost around 30 euros for the hubcap (steep but understandable) plus another 190 euros, giving a total charge to be taken from your credit card of 220 euros. This does seem a bit steep for a simple hubcap. My car came with two damaged hubcaps and some other minor dents and scrapes, which from the pricings listed would have probably exceeded the value of the car. Even if you took out the extra insurance offered (100 euros) the excess was still 200 euros. This is my main worry about Goldcar, that drivers who cause very minor damage will be charged a ridiculously high sum for the repairs, which, by the look of my car (and the rust on the bodywork damage) are not completed. " We were kept waiting at their office in the terminal as there is only one person and he does the paperwork and then takes you outside to get the car while everyone else waits for him to return. They do not operate from the car hire village, they just get another employee to bring the car to the pick up/drop off point outside arrivals. The same area is used for return. It took us over an hour to get our car. We were so glad to finally get our car that we just put the luggage in and set off. we then noticed that the service light was on and the tank was not completely full. The clutch felt very spongy but the car operated adequately during our hire period. We would never use Surprice again. "

" I collected the car and took photos of wheel damage as had heard of bad experiences before , the man was very direct and kept telling me this was a new car with only 2k miles on the clock and i had better be careful - I am 51 and never had a bump so felt a little patronised ! then when i dropped it off in the day i was accused of the damage which was present when i collected it , was told i had to pay for it and when i showed the photos of proof they said they would let me off ! as if doing me a favour , a local maltese guy came and asked if I was ok and said they do this all the time to make extra cash "

" When I booked online,I paid to rent the car and to have insurance cover. When i arrived in malta I had to pay a second insurance as the insurance I paid online did not cover us there. Therefore I would expect the initial cost of the first insurance to be refunded. I am happy to take this further "

I was charged £115.95 for insurance that I did not fully understand and on querying it was told it included an arrangement fee. Phone calls to their office were quite unsatisfactory and although the manager said he would investigate there was no response despite further phone calls. I requested a new windscreen wiper and was told I could pick one up at their office which I said was unacceptable and eventually they agreed to send a new one to me. When their rep arrived it was with a replacement car and the cars were exchanged. The fuel was on a return full basis but I was given no opportunity to fuel the original car and was charged £29.95 for a part tank of fuel! "
