" There was no thrifty signs at all at Hermosillo airport. I had to ask several rentcar providers and walk to the other side of the airport until one told us that HERTZ was handling thrifty business. At the counter, it took us an hour to be attended since a line had to be made because of HERTZ clients with a reservation. The pickup implied also a line, quiet smooth. On the other hand, the drop-off was fast and the transportation ready to the airport. Besides the lack of indication about Thrifty existing in Hermosillo's airport, the rest was acceptable. "

" We were taken in a private shuttle bus to the car collection area where we were seen very quickly and politely. Photos of car were taken before I left and on my return. They were sent to me instantly too so very transparent and mind easing. I couldn't fault them. I accepted their offer of paying for the tank of fuel before hand so I could return the car empty and not be penalised for it like most other companies in other countries do. Car was spotlessly clean too and a new Dodge for 2 weeks for a couple of hundred quid was far cheaper than the taxis to and from the airport. "

" Auto Europe have been so unhelpful I've emailed and was told no refund as I didn't turn up then explained in email I couldn't turn up as flight delayed and desk closed at 7pm not 24 hours. Was told to fill in a form on the website which I did 8 days ago. Called today for an update as heard nothing. I got put through to the wrong department was told to call back and press option 2 but the customer service department only opens for 4 hours each day 9am to 1pm so if you're in a country with a 6 hour or more time difference you have to get up in the middle of the night to call. I've been hiring cars for nearly 20 years now first time using Auto Europe and I'm shocked at how awful the service has been. I'm going to keep trying until I speak with someone or hopefully after reading this someone will reach out to me. Doubt it though as the company seems pretty incompetent. "

The replacement came and the Thrifty driver parked it in an illegal spot, so we got a parking ticket and our registration plate got take away by the police. We rang Thrifty and the customer service team said that the car as our responsibility and wouldn't take ownership at the fact that they parked it in an illegal spot. This meant we had to spend a day to find the place to pay our parking ticket off and then return the new car to Thrifty. We had planned to leave that location the day that we got the parking ticket, which we now couldn't so we had to buy two more nights accommodation until we got the situation sorted. All in all it ruined our holiday which we had spent a lot of money on all because of Thrifty. Not happy at all. "

Didn't advise which fuel type but fortunately there was only unleaded and diesel to choose from and as diesel car owner I knew. Tried selling me additional cover and told me the policy I bought was only "90% cover" the additional amount was MORE than the original cost. They wanted me to pay an additional £400. Some advice about the local police tactics too would have helped as we were confronted by two aggressive armed officers at a checkpoint who told us the hire car company should have provided us with an "international pass". As we were unaware of the laws in Mexico and the demand of $3000 (£120) or faced with seizure of driving licence we handed the money over. I accept it's not the responsibility of the hire car company but some tips about driving in the area would have saved us £120. "

Tank not full which was not a problem but they questioned us about it when returning car as they had made no record of it. Car was not really clean but just acceptable. Lots of dents/scratches but no joint inspection, just an emailed list which we had to check. We were expected to photograph the car, and we did! All was fine on return apart from the discussion over fuel but we had a photo of the gauge and mileage to evidence our argument. There was no parcel shelf and pointed out the security issues with this. A member of staff searched for one and found one from a different make that he had to wedge into place, not ideal but it did work. The car did not fail us but was not the best runner,, saying that, it did cope with mountain roads albeit sluggishly. It did have good ground clearance which was needed. "

Eventually after about 15 mins of asking people, I eventually appended myself to the 20 person waiting list, and 2.5 hours later managed to get a car. The staff were all busy but the systems were totally inefficient and the number of staff totally insufficient! Given that I had a 3hr drive ahead of me at night on strange roads after an 11 hr flight and 2.5 hr wait for a car, I was not best pleased! I would NOT recommend using Europcar and will NEVER use them again! "

I already had excess insurance but they bullied us into having it. We were about to cancel the reservation there and then as they wanted $45 per day for the insurance. A manager got involved and dropped it to $20 approx. He also told us that Uber was not avail in Cancun which it was. Another pressure into hiring the car. The insurance plus tax cost twice the amount I had already paid with you. "

" The staff did not explain how the charges for gasoline worked, and I ended up paying more than expected. They have a large sign saying the cost of filling up the gasoline in hertz instead of at a gas station, but no one explained that they would be charging an extra 13 pesos per liter as a "service charge". When I said that I would just go tank it up at a gas station, this was not posible since I had already "begun the drop-off procedures". While I was there another customer came in who also ended paying much more than expected for gasoline. It was a different situation for him, but just shows that the staff at hertz does no effort to explain how their system works. It actually felt like this was completely intentional, so that they could place these additional hidden charges on their customers. I was extremely dissatisfied with the hertz staff, even the manager who did no effort to accommodate the fact that his team is clearly not informing the clients properly. "

" Had a flat battery a few days after hiring vehicle. They said they would call a breakdown recovery man but I had to pay the cost. I had only driven the car for about 30 minutes in total so there should have been nothing wrong with the battery. The car was jump started but for the following week or so had no confidence in the vehi le. On returning the vehicle I was told that I would have to pay for the jump start. After a few words they told me there was to be no charge. I had driven the car in daylight and had windows open so there should have been no problem with the battery. Will not use them again. "

" MEX is the cheapest and this is the second time we've used them. We won't use them again! Arrived at collection desk for our prepaid car to be told that our luggage would not fit in the car we had booked (we knew it 100% would as we have the same car at home and had got our luggage and childs car seat to the airport). We were told we would HAVE TO UPGRADE costing a minimum of another twice as much as what we had already pre-paid (extra usd220!). We knew they were lying so we point blank refused and they backed down. We had it in writing that a second driver was free as an offer for booking with them yet they tried to charge us another usd100 to add my partner, as we had our crying 1 year old baby with us we just told them to forget it and to bring the car round. When they did it was one that was missing it's licence plate (we heard two lots of people in the queue in front of us refuse this same car for that reason) so we also refused it saying it wasn't legal. The staff were exceptionally rude and told us we had to have that car as there weren't any others. I said 'what about the two that you have just tried to make me take?!' But they said only if you pay for the upgrade. We stood there for a while in a deadlock situation with the baby screaming and us refusing to load our luggage and demanded to see the manager. The woman who came out was incredibly rude with a vile attitude and again said well it's this car or you can pay for a bigger one. I threatened to call me Mexican friends who were in their way to meet us (one of who is a travel agent ) to see what their take on the situation was and oh! Magically they had found a similar size car out back we could take instead! It wasn't the best- battered and dented, super scratched alloys and not even a petrol cap but we took a video of the damage and left. Upon return 11 days later in exactly the same state we collected it in we unloaded at the drop off, a Spanish speaking lady walked round the car, ticked some things on the sheet and sent me inside the office whilst they took the car away. They then tried to charge me for the missing petrol cap!! AND a ' smashed window?!!!!' When I asked what the hell and demanded we go look back over the car together to see this imaginary damage the woman had mistaken the baby's mesh Sun net laced over the window (now back in our case) as damage. Nice try! We proved the car had no cap from the initial video and escaped unscathed. Might be cheap but basically rip off merchants. Use at your own peril!! "

" this is not the first time I hire a car with EUROPCAR, I've always been reasonably satisfied but this time the experience had been poor. I booked a manual car and at my arrival I had been given an automatic one which I'm not familiar with. When I asked to amend the error the member of staff asked me to wait a little bit, 30 minutes later they gave me another car, it was again an automatic one. Finally after another 40 minutes of wait they gave me a manual car which had been just handed back and needed to be checked and washed. The car itself was old (more then 70 thousand km) and with a long list of damages. We did not complaint too much to the staff, happy to finally start the holidays after 1hour and 20 min of waiting there. Unfortunately, on the last day, one of the tyres got punctured by a sort of a metal debris and we had to change it on the side of the road. At the drop off I have told the staff about that, they did not want to listen about the full coverage I have with auto europe saying that I have to pay them for the tyre and eventually claim from the auto europe for the refund. The staff tried as well to point at some bumps and scratches the car already had at the moment of the initial collection and we have been told to wait a "manager-supervisor" to make the complaint and explain her why I was not happy. After 30 minutes of useless wait we gave up and as we were late for the ferry, we paid the damage we were covered for and walked off very angry considering as well the troubles at the collection of the car. We have all the documentation of what happened and the photos of the car "

Oscar told us it was MANDATORY in mexico and we had NO CHOICE and had to pay $200 we explained we had additional insurance and showed him the policy he then said it didn't cover Mexico - it did and we showed him where it said all countries other than those listed and mexico was not listed - he said he couldn't accept than and it had to explicitly say ' cover if for MEXICO and the amount of cover' - we asked to see where in their documentation it said it was mandatory but he could only point to where it said budget 'recommended' their additional insurance - we explained that recommended does not mean mandatory but he said that he would not let us have the car unless we bought the insurance - there was a stand off for 30 minutes - we stood our ground (very uncomfortably being stared at in an office off airport down a dusty road late at night with a 3 hours drive away from our hotel) eventually Oscar gave in and let us have the car saying if there was ANY damage they would charge us the full $800 deposit we had to block on our credit card. So many photos later of the car's current condition we left fairly upset, frightened and feeling very vulnerable. Upon return they signed the car off as OK and said they would take the block off the $800 on my credit card within 24 hours.....3 days later and it's still blocked so I have to contact my credit card company now to get it unblocked / refunded. Upon speaking to other travellers during our 3 week trip MANY other stories were told of the same type of thing BEWARE - I expected better of Budget. "

" I have rented with Auto Europe in the last many years and I have always been fully satisfied with my car rental. I am sorry to say that the standard of customer service offered by Firefly in Cancun and Merida have been well below the standard. "
" Before setting off the car park of Firefly in Cancun Airport, I noticed that the "check engine" sign on the dashboard was on. I took pictures and alerted the staff. The staff turned the engine on and off a couple of times, making the sign disappear. They assured me everything was fine, the car merely was very close to the time where revision was due. I accepted their explanation at face value and set off. Two days later, the "check engine" warning appeared again together with a second, red warning "power steering failure". I did not dare to drive the car any further and immediately called road assistance. After multiple calls and emails to both Firefly and AutoEurope, a Firefly worker arrived 24h later and replaced the faulty car. My second car worked well, but only for a couple of days, after which it too showed the "check engine" warning. Once again I called road assistance. This time I was asked to drive the car myself to the nearest Firefly center, 250 km away. We agreed on a hand in time, to have the car replaced. When I arrived at the Firefly Center in Merida Airport as instructed, I was surprised to learn that no car was available. I was sent away and asked to come back 24 h later. Only then I was able to get a car in good working condition for the rest of my trip. I was expecting to be reimbursed for the time when I could not use the rental car because of defects that were entirely the fault of the rental agency. " After a 10 hour flight we went to the Thrifty booth in Terminal 2 to pick up our car. There was no one there and no indication of what to do (ie no contact number). Dollar share the booth and so we rang their number. They told us that we had to leave the terminal and walk to the Thrifty drop off office. When we got there we were then driven to the Thrifty car pick up office. We had booked an intermediate car as there were only two of us, but Thrifty didn't have one. Instead, we were given a very large Jeep SUV. This had no boot cover, which we needed. Eventually one was found. While we were waiting for this one of the Thrifty staff was persistently trying to persuade us to use one of the Mexican hotels in Cancun that he had links with. This was very irritating, especially as we were exhausted after the flight and just wanted to get to our hotel. "

The brake light and tire pressure light was on with in moments of pulling out of the lot and when I brought the car back to complain they told me it was that or nothing but that I would still be charged in full. They then said that we had been a "no-show" and we are still fighting with Auto-Europe to get a refund, more than six months later. Avoid like the plague - it seems cheap but it will end up costing you more (we had to pay 4x the amount for an alternative walk-up hire from Europcar, on top of the hire charge that we haven't been refunded from Firefly. " The above rating refers to Avis Tijuana Intl. Airport, Mexico (our previous experience was not that dire, it was actually very good). We met 5 Avis members of staff, 3 on vehicle collection and 2 at drop-off, and NONE could speak a word of English... I know, I should speak better Spanish than I do, but... Also: there's an office at the airport, yet, one has to be driven about half a mile to the actual collection point (a huge hangar-like hall) where 2 young ladies do all the paper work. Furthermore: the vehicle I booked, Chevrolet Aveo (perfectly adequate for our purpose) was not in a very good condition: one door damaged (duly noted by the staff on collection so that we had no difficulty at drop-off); much more serious was the fact that the bottom of the boot kept collapsing / caving in on the right hand-side when the luggage was being loaded in; the light that should come on on opening the front doors did not work as the bulb had burned. Much to our delight the staff at Avis office in La Paz, Mexico, (on the sea promenade), Ivan and his younger colleague, not only spoke English but were very happy to change the bulb! "

However only one automatic car on the lot (despite specific request) - a not properly cleaned 7 seater Chrysler Town&Country (huge! not the intermediate ordered). They also put a huge deposit onto my credit card, which caused MasterCard to put an immediate block on the card for possible fraud, which caused me some embarrassment - suggest using a spare credit card for this. But the pick up/drop off was fine, even though SIXT are the only major operator that's offsite at Cancun, and they were relaxed about the free second named driver. Don't bother with an International Driving Permit - they didn't want to see it. "

Very pleasant people, we had the budget type small car which was fine for 2 of us, we did a lot of travelling around and car was completely reliable. The mandatory Mexican insurance was included in price, we had our own insurance (as we travel widely) this was not an issue and recognised. Looking forward to returning, Thank you "
