" Disappointing first impression. Flight arrived early but despite car being available I was told I had to wait 1hr 50mins to collect it or pay for an additional day. The car provided was marked as no damage yet had numerous chips and was scratched on the rear wheel arch. Having had to return to the counter I was told "okay I'll just sign it as signed out as you indicate" and never even checked it. I assume it being a one way rental they weren't too concerned. Brakes were a little grubby but otherwise the car was very good. "

" The Christchurch pick up was fine however as we travelled on the Interislander ferry from south island to north island we needed to pick up a new car at Wellington. The Wellington pick up was very unsatisfactory. We were told initially that they had no available car for us and only a pick up truck / UTE was available. When I complained an alternative car that was being returned was made available. Overall we waited an hour. In addition the car we were given did not have a completely full tank of petrol. To improve the experience the same class of car should be ready and waiting at the ferry terminal if the hire cars are not allowed to travel over on the ferry. "

The front tyres were down to the min level at the time of rental on the first car which I rejected and only very marginally better on the car I took. At hand back both front tyres would have been illegal for some time in the U.K. The front desk man advised me that if if the car has a certificate on (which it did) it was legal in NZ. Who am I to argue? That said, it is illogical to me as tyre wear is dependent on mileage they have done rather than a date 3 months earlier when it was last tested. The second car was nearly new and overall a much better driving experience. "

" Definitely avoid this car rental company in Auckland. If you have any claim for damage you'll be in deep difficulty. Their back-office processes for dealing with any car damage are broken - after a month, I still have no reply and I am awaiting a refund, and the 'problem' was a puncture, nothing more. The puncture occurred because the tyre provided on the car was well worn. Also customer service assistant lied to me (or was ignorant) about how the process would proceed. "

" I don't think Alamo deals with problems/damage in a satisfactory way, so I would advise users to avoid using them. In our case, we returned the car using the spare wheel with a punctured tyre in the boot - cause unknown, we found the tyre flat as we were about to drive off on the last day of hire. We were required to pay NZ400 (ie considerably more than the cost of a new tyre let alone a puncture repair) and the company gave no acknowledgement that the tyre was a well-worn one close to its legal limit, and that this might have been a factor. We were told we would get a credit when the true cost was known within a day, but a week later the matter has still not been resolved. I don't like the Alamo attitude that the customer is guilty until proved innocent, and I resent being out of pocket. It's shame, because their staff were polite and efficient; but they have bad company policy procedures that they have to enforce. "

We had also hired GPS which was very useful on unfamiliar roads. However we felt it needed updating as it sometimes struggled to know where we were and did like to suggest a route off of the highway when it wasn't necessary. "

I waited about 15min enquiring, being told that if he hadn't returned to tell me of a problem all was well! However, this doesn't detract from my overall experience, Ezi provided me with excellent service at an sensible price. "

" The Subaru Forester we rented was old with over 150,000 kms on the clock. The engine performed really well on our 6000 km trip and hardly missed a beat. There was plenty of space for passengers and luggage. We did have problems regarding the car. Part of perished the plastic trim broke off as we were travelling along the road and the rubber sealing strip for the windscrean was loose and partly flapped in the wind at regular intervals. This was fixed, free of charge at a windscreen repair shop when we had a stone chip fixed. Towards the end of the trip there was a whining soud coming from the front drive mechanism and we did wonder whether we would make it to the airport. It was in need of a service. We were, overall, satisfied with the car "

Not sure we needed the additional insurance cover and felt somewhat pressured to take it. also the sat-nav was too expensive and in the event did not work, still waiting to see if company will credit my card. Had to pay additional 30 dollars to leave the car at the airport on New Years day, which I think was expensive - especially as we saved the company the drive from their depot in the city. All in all the car was just what we needed and we had no problems throughout the journey. "
