I went back to the desk and was told to check the vehicle for marks and was given a list or the marks that was on there. I ended up having to take 8 other photos of other marks which were not noted. I turned on the engine and the engine light and EPC light was on a orange warning which was not mentioned. I turned off the car to then go back to the desk. I noticed bugs in the back seat and clearly the inside wasn't cleaned which they specifically said was due to covid. When going back to the desk the lady was helpful not really that apologetic and managed to get another car which thankfully worked. I ended up being delayed for over 2 hours with the back and forth to get a new car. Out of everything which annoyed me the most they talked about how clean the car would be inside and out and it was far from it. Overall the lady at the desk was helpful, however, easily the worst car collection I have ever had to do. Dropping off was easy and fine. "

" My experience with Auto Europe was pretty good, the website was easy to use and a competitive price was offered. The excess insurance was also competitive but this didn't stop the car hire company trying to sell me their own product on pick up - it would be helpful if Auto Europe could advise the car hire company that the customer has already taken out this cover to avoid the hard sell at the car hire pick up desk. I would have rated Auto Europe higher had not have changed my booking a few days before travel - I had chosen a car hire company where I could pick up at the airport but this was changed to pick up off airport via a shuttle bus. When I asked to change to a hire company where I could pick up at the airport I was advised this was possible but at the current price which was higher than I had already paid - I would have expected the price paid to be honoured as this was a change made by Auto Europe not me; I kept my existing booking. "
" The pick up procedure took ages with one person on the desk at the off airport Payless depot, I estimate a wait in the order of 30 minutes. There were two other parties in front of mine. The focus seemed to be on selling additional insurance rather than getting people into their hire cars and on their way. The tactics used to sell the insurance were dubious with tales and pictures of wind and sand damage - I wasn't asked whether I already had excess insurance (which I had already taken out through Auto Europe) and when I said I had I was advised it wasn't as good as the Payless (Avis) insurance but I declined the Avis insurance anyway. We were given a car from the group above the one we had booked with no extra charge but the condition of this vehicle wasn't great with dents and scratches on the outside and not very clean on the inside. It turned out that one headlight did not work and there was a steering vibration above 80kph (both of which were reported on drop off). Drop off was quite efficient once I was informed there was no need to go into the office (after having gone into the office!) as there we representatives checking cars in the car park but we hadn't been approached. Subsequently I have realised there was an additional charge on my hire agreement for what appears to be something called RSN which I have emailed Payless (Avis) about as I don't recall being advised of or agreeing to this - I am awaiting a reply from them. When dropping the car back, they were insistent that they were going to charge me for this damage to the screen which was already there. They couldn't even check the previous car to see if it was fit for road use, which as I said almost caused us to have a severe accident, and they claim they`d have noticed a screen chip. I`m furious about the whole situation and is quite a large chunk out of pocket for something that wasn't even my fault. They didn't even offer a discount for the inconvenience of the previous car, nor seem bothered about the accident I almost had due to the car condition. " The counter staff woman that we dealt with at the airport was very rude. I started to speak in Icelandic, and immediately she cut me off and said curtly "we do not speak Icelandic here". She processed our car and wanted me to sign the documentation which stated that we had seen the car and that it was in good condition, yet we had not seen the car at that point. Every now and then she would turn to her colleague and speak in Polish, and it seemed evident to me that it was snide comments about us. The form also required us to sign saying that we had been given the option to pay in our own currency and not Icelandic krona, which we were not. The vehicle by the way was absolutely fine. "

The sole motivation was to make us purchase optional extras such as sand and ash protection (which was £200 for 4 days). For example, we were told that we didn't have windscreen damage waiver included and needed this extra cover. Windscreen cover was included in our original package. We were told the state of the roads were terrible in Iceland when in fact they're better than the UK. We were told we wouldn't be charged for fuel if the car was returned with a full tank yet £77 was taken from my credit card which I'm still trying to get back. Our Hyundai i10 had 90,000 miles on the clock and a cracked windscreen when we picked it up – which is very dangerous, especially with the high winds in Iceland. Not surprised that this damage wasn't marked on the contract when we picked up the key as no one would accept this! "

For example, explain toll roads, lights must be on at all times etc. In many countries road tolls can be paid online up to 24 hours after going through the booth. " Once again the counter staffs main aim is to sell more extras rather than just use information I'd already given when spending time booking online. They took over 40 mins trying to tell me I'd booked two cars when it was obvious I hadn't as they could see my confirmation email on my phone. Moaning it must be wrong as I had paid £10 cheaper than their current cost even when I say I had a voucher that reduced it. Also trying to sell me extra Excess insurance as "the website" yours doesn't give adiquate cover for ash & Chips. I actually have annual Hire car Excess already which does cover me but still tried to bully more out of me. In fact it must be policy as customers either side of me at the counter weee getting same treatment. (Their warnings "oh especially if you're visiting the South with the flying Ash" is scare mongering. I had to spend 5 mins going around the car in pouring rain to check all the damaged bodywork (photographing chips not on their form) The car itself wasn't particularly clean inside & getting it into any gear was a constant struggle for the whole 4 days, from someone who drives over 20,000 miles a year. Dropping off the car was the easiest thing staff friendly & efficient. "
