A trip to my Grandfather's birthplace

Irish by birth, but proud of my Italian heritage, lately I’ve been trying to reconnect to my ancient roots. I fondly remember my Grandfather’s story of how he met my Nan in his hometown and never let go, from that day.

My Grandmother was traveling to Trieste in the 1930s when she met a young, handsome Italian bloke by the name of Virgilio. So, you see, good looks do run in the family. They fell head over heels for each other and a few generations later they have a grandson writing about their love story in a blog.

The thing is that I’ve never been to my Grandfather’s birthplace. He used to speak fondly of his childhood there, and the fact that he had even met James Joyce – one of my favourite writers – who had lived there a few years before he was born. And that was what initially prompted his love for the language that enabled him to conquer Nan.

A great starting place for my trip there will be the North of Italy, which I intend to explore starting with a car hire in Milan. In its surroundings Lake Como has been on my list of places I want to return to with enough time ever since I was there the first time around.

I won’t mind driving down south after that. Not all, because I want to go back to my favourite city in the whole world: Florence. And not only the city by itself. There are lots of beautiful towns around to discover with a car hire in Tuscany.

All in all, I love Italy. I speak and admire the language, I love the culture and with the added bonus of getting to know the place where my Grandfather lived until he met that gold-haired Irish girl… which I’m so, so glad he did – it’ll probably be a journey I won’t forget for many years.
