Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta - New Mexico, USA1-9 October 2016
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the largest hot air balloon festival in the world. Around 750 hot air balloons rise into the sky as part of the annual event and it attracts enthusiasts from all around the world. The nine-day event includes hot air balloon trips, live music, fireworks and more! Be sure to check out the Special Shape Rodeo, which is the most popular event and features odd-shaped and special hot-air balloons.
Salon du Chocolat - Porte de Versailles, France28 October - 1 November 2016
The Salon du Chocolat chocolate festival (which literally translates to Salon of Chocolate) is an annual trade fair for the international chocolate industry and will be held at Porte de Versailles this year. Around 500 delegates from France and abroad will come together at 20,000 square meters of exhibition space, where you can find everything from chocolate shops, bakeries, chocolate fashion, along with famous chefs, bakers, designers and experts, who offer chocolate recipes, workshops, conferences and many other events.
Day of the Dead - Mexico31 October - 2 November 2016
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a two-day festival which is celebrated in Mexico and has developed from ancient traditions. Although most cultures mourn the death of friends or relatives, this Mexican festival celebrates their life, with praying, sugar skulls, marigolds, colourful altars and eating and drinking the deceased's favourite dishes. Families clean the graves of their loved ones and decorate with flowers, photos, candles, foods and drinks. People stay up all night in the graveyards, socializing and telling stories about their ancestors. Musicians are hired to stroll through the graveyards, playing the favourite songs of the dead.
New York's Halloween Parade - New York, USA31 October 2016
Dress up and head to the spookiest event in New York. Hundreds of people in dress up in self-made costumes and join bands, dancers and artists as they march up Sixth Ave in Manhattan. The parade begins at seven o'clock in the evening but if you are spectating, rather than participating, head in early as the streets fill up fast!
Diwali - India and Nepal30th October 2016
Diwali, or the festival of the lights, is a time of joy and positivity throughout India and Nepal and signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. The festival preparations and rituals usually extend over a five-day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month, Kartika in the Bikram Sambat calendar. The festival will vary slightly depending on the region, but usually includes ceremonies, which are dedicated to Lakshmi, the goddess of fertility and prosperity.
MassKara Festival - Philippines1 October 2016
Held in Bacolod City each year, MassKara Festival sees the inhabitants dress themselves in colourful masks and outfits with celebrations throughout the city. The word 'Masskara' is a portmanteau combining mass (a multitude of people), and the Spanish word cara (face), thus forming MassKara (a multitude of faces). This festival was created after the huge loss of lives in a maritime tragedy in 1980. Bacolod or the'City of Smiles' decided to put on a brave face and held celebrations to help people forget about the tragic events that had happened.
Bridge Day - Oak Hill, USA15 October 2016
Considered the world's largest extreme-event, 'Bridge Day' takes place at New River Gorge Bridge in Oak Hill, West Virginia. It is estimated that 20,000 people will gather to watch the 450 BASE-jumpers who jump from the 265-metre high bridge into into the water, which is nicknamed the 'River of Death'.
