The other side of the tracks: the world's best train journeys

It's no surprise to anyone that here, at Auto Europe, if we were asked if we are Team Edward or Team Jacob, we'd pick the one with four wheels and no need for tracks. Unfortunately Meyers only gave us a sparkles/fur option, so we're still holding out on that one. While this is a car hire blog, we acknowledge that sometimes, a train is the way to go, especially if all you want is to seat back and enjoy the scenery while letting someone else do the driving. So after much debate in which harsh words were used and objects may or may not have been thrown, here's our pick of the top 3 train journeys in the world!

    1. Glacier Express, Switzerland - Pick up a car hire in Bern and you can easily get to St. Moritz, from where the famous Glacier Express departs for Zermatt. The Express in the title is somewhat misleading, as this is reported to be the slowest train in the world! Someone had a wicked sense of humour. ;)The train ride takes something like 7 hours, going up and down the Alps, across almost 300 bridges and through almost 100 tunnels! Not the fastest way to get somewhere, but I don't think anyone will notice while they gasp at the scenery.

    2. The Bergen Line, Norway - While a car hire in Bergen may be the best way to get to know this lovely city in the Norwegian coast, the best way to make your way to Oslo is probably using the Bergen Line. While the words 'world's best train ride' are thrown around a lot by promoters when talking about the subject, this just may be a very strong contender for the title.Operating at the highest altitude of any train ride connecting two European cities, this ride offers unique sightseeing opportunities, with a landscape that changes dramatically during the year, offering something different for those travelling in the winter and in the summer.

    3. The Train to the Clouds, Argentina - Richard wanted the Orient Express to take one of our top three spots, and it took a lot of arm-twisting for him to let us stick to reasonably priced train journeys! ;) But luckily for Argentina, Sarah can be very persuasive! Running from Salta to the Chile border in the Andes, this train ride is not for the faint of heart!Operating at almost 14,000 ft above sea level, the ride takes its name from the fact you'll be so high up that there will be clouds under the bridges and around the mountains. It's a 15 hour journey, so you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the staggering scenery of the Andes. If you're interested in learning more about the world's best train rides, take a look at the #TTOT hashtag on twitter on Tuesday 5th, at 9.30 AM and 9.30 PM CET!
