    Cambridge Beer Festival

When it comes to beer festivals, the first one that usually springs to mind is the biggest German event of the sort - Oktoberfest. But who wants to wait until autumn? The good news is that no one has to, since Cambridge is the proud host of the Cambridge Beer Festival, Britain's longest running event, devoted solely to fun times with beer and cider. Bearing in mind that Douglas Adams, the Cambridge-born author of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, has made 42 very popular, it was only fitting to choose the number 42 as the leitmotif of the 42nd festival.

In Adams' science fiction book this very number is the 'Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything'.Having changed places several times across the UK since 1974, the Cambridge Beer Festival seems to have come to Cambridge to stay. Curiously enough, the whole event is organised and run by volunteers, who simply happen to be beer enthusiasts. The emphasis is placed on local and national beers of all kinds, but there is also enough room for cider, mead, perry and a wide range of beers from all around the globe.

Since more and more people have become gluten intolerant, festival organisers have also taken care of them by introducing gluten-free beers at some of the stands.Good food isn't lacking at the festival either, savoury snacks in particular. Sample some of the finest cheeses along with the bread baked in local bakeries, ham and pork pies, and wash it down with crafty beer.

The selection team has decided to give stout beer a big comeback at the festival. Five selected beers will be featured as a 'Stout of the Day', all coming from British breweries.Save the date and come to at least one beer festival day in Cambridge. We cannot promise, but you may get to find out more about the appealing mystery of the number 42, beer style, of course.
