Car hire insurance 101: understanding the industry jargon

Here at Auto Europe we try and make booking your car hire simple and easy to understand, however there are still parts of our suppliers Terms & Conditions that have people scratching their head and wondering what it is they are paying for and what the insurances included in the booking covers.

Let's break it down and take a look at the insurance items included in most rentals:

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) On your voucher an amount will be displayed which can differ depending on the country you are collecting your car hire from and the group of vehicle you have booked. For example, with a car hire in Malaga the amount can range from Euro 200 to Euro 800. The amount shown in this section confirms the amount the suppliers can charge you, should any damage happen to the vehicle during your rental.

Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) When you are at the depot, the staff may offer you this option which is charged at a daily rate and it will reduce the CDW amount payable should damage occur. This is an optional extra and it is up to you if you wish to take this.

Liability Insurance (LI) Much like your own vehicle insurance, this covers any claims that may be made by a third party as a result of an accident whilst you are driving the hire car. Property damage and personal injury are included in this.

Vehicle Theft Waiver Much like the CDW, an amount will be shown on your voucher showing the maximum amount a supplier can charge you if the vehicle is stolen whilst in your care. Most suppliers will also offer an additional extra to reduce this amount.

Auto Europe's Refundable Excess Option To help or clients travel with that little extra peace of mind, we have designed an optional extra that allows you to be refunded by Auto Europe should the suppliers charge you a damage excess amount. We have two different types of options that you can take; you can find out more by clicking here.

When you book online with Auto Europe, we do outline the terms and conditions of the booking as clearly as we possibly can, but don't forget we have a team of car hire specialists available on +44 123 3225 114 to talk to you should you have any questions or concerns. When it comes to your car hire booking, there is no question too big or too small!
