History of the Christ the Redeemer statue

The iconic Christ the Redeemer statue is a globally recognized emblem of Rio de Janeiro, celebrated for its grandeur and significance. Crafted in the Art Deco style, this 98-foot tall figure of Jesus, with arms wide open, welcomes and embraces all who visit. As a representation of Christianity and the warmth of Brazilian culture, Christ the Redeemer watches over the city from the summit of Corcovado, offering a protective presence to millions of locals and tourists alike.

Distinct from its nearby counterpart, Sugarloaf Mountain, Corcovado hill is a prominent feature of Rio's skyline, strategically located to the west of the city center. The hill is home to the renowned Christ the Redeemer statue, which rises above the Tijuca Forest National Park. To reach this iconic landmark, visitors can take advantage of the escalators, elevators, and walkways that were installed in 2003, making it easier for many to access the viewing platform. The most breathtaking vistas can be enjoyed on clear, sunny days.

Initially, there were two design concepts for the statue, one depicting Christ holding a globe and the other a cross. Ultimately, the decision was made to represent Christ as an embrace, symbolizing the warmth and hospitality of Brazil. This magnificent statue has earned its place as one of the 7 New Wonders of the World.
