    Christ the Redeemer

The city of Rio de Janeiro owes its very special, exotic feel to the city's wondrous, flattering surroundings, that oftentimes give spectators the impression of being in the middle of a film, right in front of a fabulous backdrop. Daylight brings you a somewhat misty view of the seafront, lush green forests and mountains, while at night it is the stars and flickering city lights that make the scene so spectacular. The 'cidade maravilhosa' is an eclectic mix of astonishing nature and urban landscape, featuring favelas and chic bars, beaches and tropical forests. One imposing statue hovers over the city from the national park Tijuca, and dominates this scene.

A worldwide well-known symbol of Rio de Janeiro, the statue of Christ the Redeemer is often regarded as colossal and iconic. Designed in Art Deco style, the 98 feet tall statue of Jesus with his outstretched arms greets and embraces everybody. A symbol of Christianity and proverbial Brazilian warmth, Christ the Redeemer overlooks Rio de Janeiro from the hill of Corcovado, keeping a caring eye on millions of Rio's residents and random roamers.

Not to be confused with its 'neighbour' Sugarloaf Mountain, Corcovado hill dominates the landscape of Rio, being quite centrally positioned, to the west of the city centre. Home to the notable statue of Christ the Redeemer, its peak peeks out of the Tijuca Forest National Park. To access the most famous attraction of Corcovado mountain, you may use the escalators, elevators and walkways installed in 2003 to enable numerous visitors to reach the platform. Of course, the most magnificent view from the top will be on cloudless, sunny days.

There used to be two design proposals for the statue - we could have had Christ holding a globe and a cross. It was, however, decided, to portray Christ as embracing all people, simultaneously depicting Brazilian cordiality and hospitality. The statue has been chosen to be one of the 7 New World Wonders.
