Dirty and expensive - but still worth a visit...

Tower Bridge LondonOur nation's capital has been voted the dirtiest and most expensive city in Europe, by 2,376 travellers who took part in a recent TripAdvisor.com poll. For the second year running London was a clear winner in the grubby stakes, with 36% of those surveyed claiming it was dirtier than other cities. To add insult to injury, apparently it is also home to the worst cuisine, and the highest ratio of badly dressed locals. Nevertheless, London still clearly proves itself worthy of visitors, by offering the best range of green open spaces, free attractions and nightlife. Perhaps we do need to clean up our act, but I think overall these results are actually pretty good publicity for UK tourism. A whopping 50% of travellers thought our public parks were superior to any other city. Paris came a distant second with just 7%. It's an undeniable fact that London can be expensive, but with lots of free attractions fun-seekers can still have a great time without blowing the budget. The city considered to be the cleanest was Copenhagen, and the friendliest was Dublin. Venice was the most romantic and Brussels came out as the most boring (but perhaps some of those surveyed hadn't found all the hidden treasures in this destination). It looks like Paris is the ultimate loser of this poll. Despite having the best-dressed locals, and the nicest food, it was named as the most over-rated and least friendly. I doubt these statistics will make much of a dent in the huge volumes of visitors to the city each year (unless the Eiffel Tower is knocked down and the Mona Lisa goes into storage) but they are certainly food for thought. Look for more unusual city breaks this year, and you could find you pay a lot less for a much better trip. The Polish city of Krakow was voted the most under-rated by travellers, followed by Bruges and Edinburgh.
