    F1 - Race 4 - China

F1 flagAnother event filled grand prix in China. Red Bull were in pole and 2nd on the grid to start, surely Sebastian Vettel was in line for a second win. But, with Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton in 5th and 6th, and with rain forecast it was wide open! The forecast rain came just before the start of the race. Timo Glock's problems started on the grid when his engine lost air pressure and the Virgin team had to take the car back to the garage. Fernando Alonso (3rd) got off to a great start, immediately passing both Red Bull cars although there was much speculation that he jumped the lights! Lap 1 saw a pile up as Vitantonio Liuzzi lost control on turn six and took out Kamui Kobayashi and Sebastien Buemi. Out came the safety car. Lap 2 saw Alonso, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton make pit stops, changing to intermediate tyres. Webber damaged his front jack on the pit stop which cost him and Vettel precious time. Lap 3 the safety car still out, and Nico Rosberg was now in front. Lap 5 and Alonso gets a drive-through penalty for his jump start. Hamilton and Vettel make another pit stop and change to slicks just missing each other on the way out! Hamilton started his exit as Vettel passed alongside the McLaren box. Hamilton wasn't giving way so Vettel squeezed him towards the pit apron. Both drivers were reprimanded.Lap 6 and Rosberg was leading with Button, Robert Kubica, Pedro De La Rosa, Adrian Sutil, Vitaly Petrov, Webber and Alonso behind. But lap 8 saw De La Rosa out when his car started emitting clouds of smoke. Vettel overtook Webber in lap 9. Lap 10 saw Button closing the gap on Rosberg and Hamilton move up to 10th overtaking Webber. Lap 11 Hamilton made even more progress taking on Vettel and Sutil to go 7th! Lap 15 Hamilton tried to take on Schumacher on turn 14 but failed. Lap 16, same turn, he succeeds to go 5th! Rosberg takes turn 11 wide on Lap 19 allowing Button to close the gap on him and then take the lead at turn 14. Lap 21 saw bits fly off Alguersuari's car and the safety car came out whilst it was cleared. The safety car was in by lap 25 and, with the track being much wetter now, Button was leading from Rosberg, Kubica, Petrov then Hamilton. Lap 27 saw Hamilton move up to 4th and Alonso and Vettel took on Michael Schumacher. Lap 29, turn 14 again, saw Hamilton take 3rd from Kubica and Alonso pass Sutil for 6th.Lap 33 and Petrov spun but carries on. Alonso is now 5th and Vettel is 6th. Lap 35 and Hamilton was right up close behind Rosberg but he couldn't get past him. Webber made another pit stop on lap 36 for new intermediate tyres. Over the next two laps Hamilton, Kubica, Vettel, Button and Alonso all did the same. Lap 39 Button is 1st and Hamilton takes 2nd. By lap 41 Button leads Hamilton by 3.7 seconds and by lap 44 it was 4.1 seconds. Alonso pushing for 3rd from Rosberg. Petrov took 7th place in lap 55 after Webber slid into turn 13. Schumacher also lost position to Massa after taking the turn wide. A great race for the British drivers! Big disappointment for the Red Bull team who failed to replicate the result of Malaysia and for Virgin, who yet again failed to finish. Next race 9th May in Spain - assuming they can get the cars there by then!
