Great Britain as a Film Set

    Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey, one of the most beloved British period dramas, is set in the picturesque and idyllic county of Hampshire, only five miles south of the royal county of Berkshire.

Highclere Castle has been the home of the Earls of Carnarvon since the 17th century. It owes its design to a famous British architect, who redesigned the castle only after he had finished the construction of the Houses of Parliament. There certainly are some similarities between the two! The architect himself described the style of the castle as a fusion of Italian, European Renaissance and British architecture. Visitors to Highclere Castle can admire not only the spectacular parkland featuring cedar trees and splendid gardens, but also the Egyptian Exhibition displayed in the castle. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun together with his colleague Mr.Carter.This beautiful Victorian castle is open to visits between 60 and 70 days a year. Visitors to the castle can enjoy tea and lunch in various tearooms, or a walk through the marvellous gardens.

The Scottish Highlands, stripped of lush vegetation, attracts visitors with its almost unearthly beauty. The unique landscape is traversed by fast rivers and waterfalls, and scenic mountain peaks covered in snow. Glencoe is a major tourist destination in the Highlands and a go-to place if you are in the mood for skiing, climbing and hiking. Its historic essence can be spotted throughout the whole region. And, of course, the Oscar-winning hit Braveheart was filmed in this area!

    The Queen

Once a country retreat designed in the Loire chateau style, the Waddesdon Manor has been selected to be one of the scenic shooting locations for the massively successful film 'The Queen'. It is only 50 miles away from London and makes for a perfect day trip if you are keen on arts, fine dining and a magical Christmas atmosphere. This year, the Christmas theme will be Lights and Legends, where the house decoration will reflect myths, legends and rituals from all over the world. The imposing mansion houses a working aviary with colourful birds of many breeds, and impressive gardens with sculptures and fountains. Each of them tells its own (hi)story, and it is up to you to discover it!
