    Oktoberfest 2014

    O'zapft is!

The 181st Oktoberfest has kicked off in Munich. This lively annual crowd-puller started as a wedding celebration of Crown King Ludwig and Queen Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810. The generous king invited citizens of Munich to eat, drink, and enjoy horse races and shooting displays for 5 days. The feast was such a great success that they decided to stage it next year, too. One year after another, it has become a traditional Munich event. In the queen's honour the festival ground was named Theresienwiese, or, short - Wiesn.

Nowadays Oktoberfest is a world-famous event that overall celebrates Bavarian tradition, customs, and beer! Over 6 million litres of beer are drunk every year! The beer you will find in the many tents at Theresienwiese comes exclusively from Munich, and has only three ingredients: hops, barley and water. Only beer brewed within Munich's city limits can be considered Oktoberfest Beer. As this festival beer with its 6% alcohol is far stronger and sweeter than a typical German lager, it is not uncommon to see people faint from exhaustion. Having one too many mugs oftentimes also results in parents losing children. Curiously enough, besides children, Australian passports are the second most often lost valuable at the funfair.

Oktoberfest is also known for its vivid colours; funfair rides, colourful parades and fashionable 'dirndl' dresses dominate the Wiesn. This popular traditional Bavarian outfit, along with 'Lederhosen' for men, belongs to the dress code at Oktoberfest.Dress up, order a beer, and don't forget the scrumptious food to soak it up - giant Bavarian pretzels, hearty meals consisting of roasted oxen, pork and chicken, and to sweeten things up, colourful gingerbread hearts and nuts roasted with honey. Our tip is to rather try out the merry-go-rounds and various loop rides before tasting all those delicious specialties.Oktoberfest is running until 5th October 2014.

Be sure not to miss it!
