    The quiet Canary: Fuerteventura

The Canary Islands have long been a favourite tourist destination amongst us Brits with the island of Fuerteventura often over looked for the islands of Tenerife and Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. Due to this, Fuerteventura has managed to retain its charm.

A little history on the island to start with! Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canary Islands and was born due to a volcanic eruption some 20 million years ago. The island can be a little windy at times, which is how the name Fuerteventura came about; it means strong wind in Spanish. Ok that's enough of the history let's move on to the fun stuff!

You can expect to get fantastic year round temperatures, which is why the island is often visited throughout the winter months, making a car hire in Fuerteventura a great idea! If you are into your water sports; especially windsurfing then this is the island for you. The island has its fair share of visitors throughout the year. Turtles, marlins, whales and dolphins are often spotted in the Atlantic waters; if you have time you can catch a boat trip from Corralejo harbour.

The beaches on Fuerteventura are simply breath taking! Standing on the sands looking out across the clear blue ocean you may be mistaken for thinking you have been stranded on a tropical island! I recommend taking the short ferry ride from Corralejo across to Isla Lobos, the beaches there are amazing and the wildlife mesmerizing!

Caleta de Fuste is a lively tourist resort; it has one main street where you will find the bars, restaurants and shops. Betancuria is the town to visit if you are looking for a little culture and if you are looking for the perfect spot for surfing then head to Cotilli.

You can always try another of the Canary Islands; Tenerife is well known for its nightlife however the island has so much more to offer. If you get the chance to visit then you must go and explore the beautiful Mount Teide, it is the highest mountain in Spain! When you are planning your holiday you can always check our site for help and tips, so remember when you are looking to book a car hire in Spain don't forget to check us out!
