Things you should know when hiring a car

    Car Hire

So you’re going on holidays, and you’ve decided that the best way to travel is with a handy car hire from Auto Europe. Great choice! At Auto Europe we like to give our clients as much information as possible, so they can always make an informed decision. In order to help you make the most of your hire, here are a few things you should know.

    Car hire tips

First of all, Auto Europe is a broker. That means we work with several international and local car hire suppliers to bring you the most affordable vehicle anywhere in the world. That also means that when you go to pick up your car hire, you shouldn’t look for Auto Europe’s desk, but rather look for the desk of the supplier noted on your voucher.

Be sure to read Terms & Conditions

The booking engine also shows the Terms & Conditions for a given car, as well as the local fees. Someone once pointed out that the biggest lie told on the Internet is “I’ve read and accept the Terms & Conditions”, but in this case we strongly urge you to go over them, as they describe in detail exactly what the car hire cost includes and (just as important) doesn’t include.

Moreover, it lists the documents you’ll need to pick up the vehicle. Needless to say, you will need to present the supplier with a valid driving licence. In addition, having a credit card in the name of the main driver is mandatory, and the card will be used to block deposit. Make sure you have a valid DVLA code on you (only for UK citizens) and the printed car hire voucher. Sometimes suppliers will demand that you show them your utility bills as proof of address. Refer to your voucher to see if the utility bills are needed for the pick-up.

    Potential local charges

Recently, we’ve also added the local fees that may be charged at the desk. These local fees include things like young driver surcharges, additional drivers, extras like GPS or baby car seats, and the fuel policy. We have a tip for you! Have a look at our Promotions because you may be lucky and your car hire may be eligible for an upgrade or a free GPS!

    Fuel Policy

People often wonder about the fuel policy. With some suppliers, the client needs to return the car with the same amount of fuel it had at the start of the journey. So if the car is supplied with a full tank, the client will need to top up the tank before returning the car. Other suppliers charge the client a full tank of fuel upfront (locally) and the client needs to return the car with the tank as empty as possible, as any unused fuel will not be refunded. We would like to stress the fact that the type of fuel policy is indicated both in the Terms & Conditions (that you can see prior to booking the car) and on the voucher (that is emailed or faxed to you after you make the booking).

Regarding the pick-up desks, their location is noted on the voucher, together with the car hire supplier. You should be aware that airport locations may not be located directly at the terminal, in which case there will often be a shuttle bus ready to take you there. Some locations are extremely busy during peak season, so some wait time to pick up the vehicle is to be expected. An extra tip – if you are flexible, don’t just dismiss downtown pick-up locations as they may be up to 30% cheaper!

Finally, you should take a look at our FAQs, as they also provide useful information regarding the documents you need when picking up your vehicle (you’d be surprised at how many people forget to bring their driver’s licence!), as well as our cancellation and amendment policies.

We hope you have a great holiday, filled with amazing adventures and great photo opportunities!
