Top 5 Tips for a Family Campervan Holiday

Now that summer has officially begun, it is the perfect time to pack up the whole family and head for the open road in a 'home on wheels' - a hired campervan! You can make huge savings on accommodation, and your itinerary is completely up to you. There are a few things you should keep in mind, however, to make sure that your family trip is enjoyable for all, adults and kids alike. Here are our top tips for a successful campervan holiday!

    1. Plan ahead

One of the perks of having a mode of transportation that also doubles as your accommodation is that you can be more spontaneous - if you feel like making a day trip out somewhere you just discovered on the road, you can! It is a good idea, though, to make at least a rudimentary plan of your route, so that you have an idea of how much distance you need to cover each day, for example. It is also important to look into booking camping sites or parking spaces for your campervan, as these are in high demand during the summer season.

    2. Research camping sites

When travelling with children, you may wish to find family-friendly camping sites that will have other holidaying families. Not only are other families likely to be more understanding neighbours, but the kids are bound to find others to play with, which always makes for a great vacation. Children will have no problem finding friends beyond language barriers, and it is well known that happy kids usually make for happy parents, too!

    3. Choose the model you hire carefully

Think about what your family really needs when it comes to campervan amenities, and what kind of model suits your holiday best. If you have a small family, you may be able to manage with a smaller model, such as a high-top or a pop-top, and this will allow you to save on petrol costs, besides of course being a cheaper rental. However, older children may need more space, or if you are planning on staying put for multiple days, it may be a good idea to ensure you have beds for all and ample sitting space. If needed, make sure you discuss add-ons such as child seats.

    4. Be prepared for the long drives

Try to plan for, and around, the children so that driving can be a pleasant experience for everyone. Have lots of entertainment available at all times. It may also be good to try to limit the amount of long drives as much as possible - longer stops at a destination and less driving make for a more memorable holiday.

    5. Be flexible and try to relax

If something does not go according to plan, don't panic! An unexpected turn can also take you somewhere new and exciting. If the weather doesn't agree with your plans, make the most of it with some great indoor activities. And as a general tip, choose a destination that has something for everyone! Most of all, remember to just take some time, sit back and relax. Auto Europe works with multiple campervan suppliers around the world, offering a great range of models at reasonable prices.
