The lady did not want to know nor would she let me use my partners credit card (of course the contract states it has to be mine as I'm the driver). Long story short not very helpful. But whilst I am annoyed about this issue, that isnt the real problem with my booking. We picked up the vehicle around 10pm with it being pitch black. Upon setting off and getting onto the main road the clutch was getting stuck and springing back up at me. It seemed to be an intermittent thing and was hit n miss. We arrived at our destination all ok. The next morning I inspected the vehicle properly and to my shock horror it was clear that they had installed a carpet matt (rubber) that did not fit that vehicle. This was the reason for the clutch sticking (it was catching on the matt). I had to make sure that the matt was moved down so it wouldn't catch for the rest of our trip and upon drop-off I made the gentleman aware of the issue and he immediately recognised what the problem was and that the matt wasnt fit for purpose. "

" We booked a car with Auto europe only to find that you placed our booking with Abby car. We checked their trustpilot reviews to find that 89% of their reviews were one star. The office was supposed to be 150 metres from the airport but it was more like 500 metres. The staff were rude and pushy, the car was in poor condition and when we returned the car we were told that there was a 86 euro cleaning fee because the car was dusty. Nobody told me that I was expected to wash the car whilst on my holiday and if you had told me that I would have booked with a professional company that includes that type of thing in their prices. I was told by Abby car that if I didn't pay the 86 euros cleaning fee they would keep my 1400 euro deposit! I decided to fight this charge with my credit card company. I am 50 years old and hore a car once or twice a year whilst on holiday and I have never been treated so badly. I would never use Abby car again and by extension I would never use Auto Europe again as it was you who placed my booking with Abby car. "

I asked to see a document stating that roadside assistance was mandatory and not included in the booking. The employee left for a few minutes and returned to say that, because we had a baby with us--and because she was feeling generous--she would waive the fee. She added that, if it hadn't been for the baby, she would not have allowed us to take the car. The car itself was acceptable but not well maintained. It needed new tires, which were slippery in the rain, and the windshield wipers were worn and ineffective. "

He said he could only rent a car to me if I paid an additional £175 fee. I was stranded, had no other way to reach my destination so I paid £175 plus the security deposit (which was returned later) using the same credit card that the agent said he could not accept for the original autoeurope booking. I feel this was done because he knew I had no other way. A Long distance from airport. No taxi nearby. Seems excessive charge for hoovering. Returned the car as received , same agent proceeded to examine tires underneath of car and bodywork. Then announced I would have to pay for damage to front bumper. After a big argument and speaking to the manger they agreed there was in fact no visible damage to the front of the car. I would also like to express my concerns about the driver, acting for Abbycar, A South African now living in Athens, he collected us from the airport and drove us to the pick-up depot. For the whole duration of the drive his only topic of conversation was based around racist comments about Greeks, the immigrant community and his own ability to react to confrontation by violence. This experience combined with unexpected financial problem mentioned above made us both feel that we were, for want of a better expression, dealing with a bunch of crooks. "

In the meantime the shuttle from the airport is coming with the next lot of people to queue up to collect their rental car. Starting to panic now as it was getting late. Finally, we got given the rental sheet, examined the car for damages, marked on the sheet, signed it and we were out. 5 minute job. The whole process shouldn't not take more than 10 to 15 minutes since all the paperwork and documents are already in place and presented at the time of collection. In the end we arrived an hour later than scheduled at our accommodation so we missed our dinner. A very tiring, very exasperating and very frustrating experience which is a shame as the car was good. Notably the website and actual address is not easy to find via satnav, so a map to return the car to would have been useful. "

Abbey Car, however, requested €40 on arrival at the desk to guarantee roadside assistance within 3 hours. Otherwise, they explained, it could be a 24 hour wait for assistance. Although Abbey Care were overall v good, because of this issue, I will probably not book with Abbey Car again. "

I think the problem with the booking may lie originally with AutoEurope rather than Abbycars but as AE resolved the situation promptly I anticipate continuing to use them "

" On collection there focus was to try upgrade insurance at a premium, they needed to block £1600 as a security deposit which was prohibited by my bank. my bank advised that this is becoming an increasing problem as the amount of money is automatically flagged as fraud. I managed to resolve it, however the counter staff advised if i couldn't i would lose the rental amount and or i could pay an additional £500 to resolve the deposit issue. I ordered a kia stonic (2 x suitcases) or similar and ended up with a fiat 500xl which was in a bad state of repair, tyres were worn and not fit for purpose, door would not open at times and the parking brake worked intermittently. I could not fit my suitcases in it without putting down the back seats. this was a really bad experience especially from someone that travels on business and rents cars regularly. by far the worst company i have ever dealt with. " Awful. Total scam. They are not on site. 500m away across busy road with no crossing point. No good with luggage and/or children. They did not offer full-full fuel. They do not record pre-existing damage properly - and there was a LOT of pre-existing damage. Car in poor condition overall, with poor brakes - we decided to not use the car all week because of this, only travelling to and from airport (with no incident). On return the inspector went straight to front underside of car and asked to see our photos of the area. The pre-rental report had the area marked with damage, but he said he had marked it down in a slightly different position and said it was new. They did not provide any photos of the car at the time of pick-up to prove their claim, but insisted we had to do this or we were at fault. They said it was "not their job" to take photos. They threatened to take the full deposit unless we signed and agreed to pay 596 euro. They tried to rush us to sign, then tore up the paperwork - including our copy of the agreement and report - in front of us. We were told they would look at it again later and contact us by phone, but instead they charged the full 700 euro to our card after our flight had taken off. They even opted to convert currency to Sterling without our consent (we were not in the country), and this increases the cost to us. This has ruined our holiday. We feel completely ripped off. I regret setting foot in Corfu. I would be very reluctant to hire a car in Europe again. It amazes me the EU tolerate this practice. The hire company should have to provide evidence by pre-rental photos too, in order to make a fair contract, rather than just vague hand-drawn marks on a pro-forma generic saloon car diagram which has no accuracy or relevance to the actual car rented. I would never use Abbycar anywhere in the world. "

" According to the current guidance on Gov.UK a UK drivers licence is all that is required to drive in Greece. An IDP is not required. Nowhere in your voucher notes did it say a paper licence was any different to a photo card licence. Nearly all the hire companies in Crete will only accept photo card licences. There was one company that would hire a car to me using just my paper licence but at four times the cost of the car I had booked through you. "

When we were offered a car in the intermediate range as booked, it was clear we were never going to get 4 people and luggage for 4 for a weeks holiday. We ended up having to pay for an upgrade to a larger vehicle just to accommodate the luggage. I would just prefer this to be much clearer, as the only suitcases the intermediate car would carry is small overnight/weekend cases. This is not appropriate for a weeks hire at, what is a holiday destination, therefore unlikely to have people with small suitcases. " I raised a complaint as Abbeycar charged an excessive amount of €560+VAT + other charges to repair a chip on the windscreen. This seems to be just a convenient way to bag the deposit. There was also an asymmetry between the inspection at check-out and check-in. In particular, we were not prompted to look at windscreen chips at check-out. The The check-out inspection was only done from the outside and we were only prompted to look for scratches larger than 5 cm on the finish and dents/bulges. In contrast, the inspector went into the car at the check-out from where the chip was more easily to detect. My partner and me are not aware that we got a hit by a stone creating the chip and there is the possibility that it was there before. However, admittedly we cannot exclude that it happened during the rental and as it is not documented, need to take responsibility. "

" Even before I collected the car I had some concerns about the attention this company pays to details. It seems they have failed to update their terms and conditions now that the UK is no longer in the EU. The terms say they require an Informational Driving Permit for licences issued outside the EU. However, in reality, they don't. This meant that we went to the trouble of getting passport photos and documents to obtain an IDP which was never required. This situation was especially frustrating because before traveling I emailed autoeurope to double check if an IDP was actually required. In reply Pedro Ferreira said it was a requirement and that if we didn't have one we should cancel our booking or change the driver. I just wonder how many customers from the UK just cancel because of this simple oversight by Abbycar. All they need to do is update their terms to reflect current legislation - UK drivers do not need an IDP to drive in Greece or anywhere else in the EU. "

" Abby Car didn't have a car for us at pick up - the computer system had overbooked. They arranged another car from another car hire company at no asdditional cost to me. Overall delay of 2 hours to pick up car. Abbey Car was professional and helpful, but unsure why alternative car couldn't have been organised before my arrival. Auto Europe contact was good but would have been better if Auto Europe representative spoke directly to alternative hire car company to save customer having to revisit all details of contract. Company tried to sell increased insurance to value of additional £300.00. Auto Europe helpful when I contacted them at the car hire office, but this shouldn't have been necessary. This could have been a smoother process. The alternative car hire company was excellent and gave me a upgrade on care for no additional cost and all went smoothly from then on. Scores of 1 reflect that we didn't pick up a car from Abbey Car in end - should have a N/A . "

I think Abbycar breached the rental contract as it is their responsibility to ensure a car they are renting have current service stamp as they call it in Greece. I believe I deserve some sort of compensation for having to drive a car without legally required MOT. "

Once served, I received the car keys only for the staff member to say that I wasn't allowed to take the car due to the size of my bike bag (large soft suitcase). I explained that it would fit in the backseat or in the boot with the backseat down. However, she refused and gave me the option of an upgrade for 175 euros. In an impossible position and in need of a car, I paid the extra. I later submitted a complaint through Auto Europe and hope to receive a refund for the difference. The upgrades car hadn't been cleaned and the media in the car didn't exist / work . The experience of returning the car was good. "

" Very good as used Auto Europe a lot in the past. However on this occasion two issues: 1) The indicated pickup place on the Auto Europe voucher at Rhodes Airport of Exit 9 is wrong, it is Exit 5. Exit 9 is departures, and that doesn't matter because you are dropped at the airport by the shuttle bus anyway. Exit 5 is important because it is a walk away and you wait where no one can tell you anything about picking up a rental car there. 30 minutes wasted! 2) Whilst the insurance purchased through Auto Europe was extra cover, Abbey did not recognise accept it was fully insured unless I paid more, which I did not because supposed to be included with the offer! "

Then I was charged a further 114 euro for this second booking, and was told I would be charged 50 by Abby cars or Auto europe for a " no show". This "no show" is a no show from Abby cars. You will not make any charge what so ever to my card in relation to Abby cars. "

" Very unhappy. There suppled a shuttle bus which was OK. When we arrived we were told we needed a credit card which we don't have. Yes it was on the paper work but we have never had to use one before as my visa debit card has always been accepted.They in the end said we could still have the car if we paid another €350. My card was then accepted to pay this extra money. We had already paid the price of hire when it was booked. We didn't understand why this was but we paid it as we needed the car. They then said they would give us the next size car up. The car had an awful lot of scratches and black marks on it, so my wife had to take a video of the whole of the car. As we got half way to our hotel the service light came on. So we rang them to report it. First of all they didn't understand why it was a problem for us. I had to insist on returning the car the following morning to be checked. We had to take it to there garage to be sorted. With all the cars we have hired in Rhodes we have never had anything like this. We will never use abbycars again as we ended up paying a lot more for it and would of got a better deal elsewhere. We were not the only holiday makers that this happen to. "

Couldn't get hold of anyone on emergency number and the number given for the car hire was wrong. Eventually spoke to customer service next day., extremely unhelpful and told us we would be classed as a NO SHOW and the car hire cancelled. Absolutely appalling service and we are still waiting for a full refund over 2 weeks later. We had to borrow money to hire a car as my wife is in poor health so was essential we had a car. " The car was not as specified the boot was tiny , we booked one for 3 cases and 5 people the battered Suzuki we were provided with was disgustingly stained inside , there was a chip in the windscreen. My case was damaged after having to be wedged in. We asked for another car but they only had smaller vehicles available. The gear box missed gears, the engine was pathetically under powered and keyless entry did not work. It barely made it up the steep roads. This car is fir only for the scrap heap and in our opinion was dangerous to drive.the steering also tracked right. "

Instead the two people in Abbycar office were arguing loudly discussing my order and pointing at the screen then making phone calls like they were not happy about something (I don't understand Greek). Then I was given a small Kia XCreed, I said I ordered VW SUV and he said sharply or similar. I was not going to argue as it was very late (10pm at this time) and I needed to get the kids who were very tired to our hotel 1 hour away. I had suitcases on the backseats making it cramped very cramped, its not an SUV so how is that similar? To me this was a downgrade. I understand that I got a very good price for an SUV online but thats what I ordered and I feel they were discussing this cost and decided to give me a smaller car. I also didn't like how he said I was not covered for breakdowns and I had to pay 40EUR to protect me as if the car broke down I could have to pay 300-500EUR for a recovery etc. I paid for an extra cover online and this was not mentioned at the time. He then kept stating about not driving off road and made me sign a form to say I would not drive off road as there would be a penalty charge, this made me feel uneasy all holiday when pulling into a carpark which may not be concreted or tarmaced, wondering if the car is trackered and they would fine me. " Our experience overall with AbbyCar was excellent. Our checking-in, after arriving in Rhodes was great. We were picked up by our taxi after c.15 minutes wait (which is fine). We were attended to by a professional clerk who quickly took us through the paperwork we needed to complete. In fact the only delay, at that stage, was caused by ourselves as we hadn't remembered we needed a Credit Card in the name of the Driver/person booking the vehicle (Oops!). The car was clean and tidy with a full tank of petrol. The clerk walked us around the vehicle pointing out and marking on our contract existing damage (which was minimal, and the usual scratches you'd expect with a hire car). We had no need to contact AbbyCar throughout the duration of our stay. At the time of checking the car back (at the end of our stay), again the process was slick and pain-free. The gentleman checked that we hadn't caused any new damage and asked us to ensure we took a photo of the document confirming that to be the case, which he'd signed. We were then swiftly taxied to the nearby Airport (c.10 minutes max away). "

" The pick up wasn't clear where to meet. The booking said T9 - which i went to and had to phone to find out where to meet. The transport to Abbeycars was fine. It felt like At reception their primary goal was to sell additional insurance - which i'd already purchased via autoeurope. so they made everything hard work after that. one credit card didn't work, so i offer to pay via debit card or amex which they refused to take both for a 700 Euro hold. the entire thing took nearly an hour to sort out. autoeurope - you need to sort out this insurance issue. i'd already paid you additional for full waiver this so having to do a seperate 3rd party hold on arrival wasn't explained with 700 euro hold put on my card. very poor experience for everyone. just glad there were no claims needs, as i can only imagine the pain. then on last day the car got a puncture on way to airport, there was no spare wheel! so we were on a remote road, little phone reception and no spare. thankfully with help from locals we got hold of abbey car and we were only a short distance from the airport so it worked out ok. I would expect more - these two points above i hope you address, one is in your gift the other - spare tyre would seem an essential thing to have in any car. Unless you sort out the waiver i won't be using autoeurope again if that is how it works if pay you and have to then have large holds on my card locally. "

" Firstly when booking online it was advertised that it was pick up at airport but after paying I got info saying that it was a shuttle bus to collect. I would not have booked if that was the case. I had info stating that I had to meet a rep at exit 5. However nobody was there and after some time I eventually found the rep at exit 9! The staff at the counter were friendly until I said I had my own insurance and then they pretty much didnt talk to me. I purchased a Peugeot 206 or similar and I was given a fiat panda that we could only just fit in with all our luggage. The car was in a pretty bad condition with dents and bumps all over and a warning sign on the dash. The staff said this was normal! Not impressed at all until we returned which we were met with friendly staff. Still awaiting or deposit return. Will not be recommending abbey cars to anyone. "

" Staff were great - although the office was a lot further from the airport than the stated 150m - not much fun lugging a suitcase in 37C heat and having to cross main roads etc... Car itself was only OK - brakes a bit "soft" and car a bit scuffed all round and one side repeat indicator loose/occasionally popping out. Also the central locking was erratic although I think this was just a low battery in the key fob. It did mean that there was no way of locking all the doors and the boot on some occasions, which is a security risk. Just a bit more attential to detail needed I think, but acceptable. "

And despite the fact that I have been booking my cars with AutoEurope for ever...and turned 70 three years ago, I have never been charged a surcharge for being over 70! In all I had to pay an extra Euro70 when collecting the vehicle. And it took over an hour to collect. And the guy dealing with it was surly, and stank of BO. And the car was old without a USB connection. Altogether, the worst AutoEurope (Abby) experience ever. "

This was not a problem once we found this out but it could have been more accurately described which would have made collection of the vehicle easier. " An Absolute SCAM! Never ever again am I using this company! Absolute thieves but to be honest, the money they scammed us out of is not the part that annoys me the most. It's the insulting of our intelligence and the blatant lies that annoy me the most. When we picked up the car an employee named George checked the damage of the car. We checked the car with him and have this on VIDEO. Knowing how dodgy some car rental companies can be we recorded the whole checking process and even mentioned the damages he did not write down. He said that these damages were not important enough for him to note and are damages we will not be charged for. Again all of this process was recorded and you can clearly hear his voice and see his hands on video. It was 9pm. After we got to our hotel we realized we actually didn't need our car because we we were in the central part of Heraklion so we wouldn't be driving a lot. The car stayed at our hotel for the most part. Mind you the parking of our hotel had laminate flooring. We maybe drove the car 4 times during our whole stay. From the airport to the hotel, from the hotel to the port of Heraklion. All round trips. Nothing ever happened on our little car trips our drive back to the airport included. As soon as we arrived at the airport to drop the car off, George started looking for damage under the car. Something he didn't do when we picked up the car but was the first thing he did when we dropped it off. This is the only spot he thoroughly checked for damage by the way when dropping off the car. This is where and why he wanted to charge us the full deposit amount of €275. We argued that this was not honest because he never checked this spot when we picked up the car but now he's checking it thoroughly as if that's the only place a car could be damaged on a trip. To us this looked like he knew something we did not. But I'm not going to speculate. Although we have him on video checking every part of the car except for under the front bumper he stated that he did check this when we picked it up. This was the first lie. And what annoyed us the most about this, is the blatant lie he was telling us that he did check the car and it wasn't him on video. While like I said before, we can clearly hear his voice on video and see his hands and his watch. We even realized when watching the video that he was dressed in the exact same way as when we picked up the car. But supposedly it wasn't him on video. Like at least wear different clothes sir? After further discussion and very heated arguments (because we weren't going to take this lying down and this part of the conversation is recorded too by the way) he mentioned he doesn't usually check for damage under cars. The police came after a while because like I mentioned discussion got heated, the police actually even sided with us because of all the video footage we had. Like I mentioned the car was picked up at 9pm so it was dark when the checks were being done. We dropped the car off at 11am and when in the shadow the damage under the car he mentioned was not even visible. However according to George he would have been able to see the damage when even the Police was not able to do so at 11am. Unfortunately for us the Police does not intervene in such matters. After this the manager was called to settle the matter but it seemed like he was not interested in hearing anything and only wanted us to leave. We have now realized that except for taking these people to court we can't do anything else. NEVER EVER WILL THIS COMPANY BE USED BY US ANYMORE! AND WE WILL SEE THEM IN COURT "

Having had an extremely satisfactory trip to Corfu (10th September to 1st October) using Thrifty Cars, I was shocked by my experience with AbbyCar (and also AutoEuropr). 3 Main issues A) Misleading info on distance from terminal 150m is more like 400m+. I'm on special assistance and using a stick between knee replacement operations. There was no-one to greet at the airport and we had to ask where the AbbyCar office was. I think AutoEurope should have signalled this more clearly as it would have aggectex my choice of company. B). Again I was charged a 35 Euro late collection fee which although on the voucher (when pointed out to me) was not evident at the time of booking. As I was on a similarly timed flight to the previous visit and had not paid this fee to Thrifty I was again bemused. Again my decision to book with this company would have been affected if this information was clearly stated at the time of booking. C) The office service was poor. The printer jammed andI was there for 40 minutes plus. I'd had to leave my wife with the luggage at the airport. By the time I returned she was the only person standing outside the terminal building. (NB we are both 73). The car itself and the return experience were fine. I was driven back to the airport. However I will avoid this company in all future bookings and will advise friends and family against using them. "

" What I booked being "Drive" last year and this year were 2 extreme experiences that were poles apart. I did not get the full details until I had booked and by then this was not refundable. Given the exceptional and customer friendly experience last year I did not think it would be a problem. How wrong I was. PS. in addition the online "free aditional driver" offer was worthless as it did not cover the time of the car hire booked (was valid from the day after the hire ended). Given the additional cost of the hire/insurance I felt it was pointless to pursue this with Abbycar. "
" Apologies as I have to be very frank. I have hired holiday cars on many occasions and used auto europe last year and so was keen to use again. Upon this occassion we arrived at the airport and I was taken off site (not walking distance)and strictly without my travel partner and subjected to very hard sell tactics for zero excess insurance. I was told that the excesses as per paperwork were incorrect as i was liable for the full value of the car, I was told that i had just 5 minutes to make a decision or the booking would be cancelled. i was told that the "full protection" I thought I had booked online and evidenced in my paperwork was invalid. I was asked to pay a whopping €175 for zero excess insurance. I also had to authorise with PIN €100 to cover any violations eg speeding/parking tickets. On calling my friend to check online customer reviews I learned that to not take out the insurance was likely to result in a full excess charge even for a minor stone chip or even sand left in the car (which is usually fair wear and tear). I feel that myself and the somewhat distraught mature lady in front of me (with different counter staff) were singled out and subjected to time share style hard sell tactics. I am a reasonable and patient person and have thought long and hard about this experience and won't let it cloud my otherwise exceptional experience and respect for the Greek people over the past few years particularly. Any help and feedback you can give me is welcomed. It seems that this was not an isolated incident given the online reviews and I invite you to investigate and make good the reputations damaged. Please would you acknowledge this and inform me about your complaints procedure. "

There were scratches all over the car and yet when i returned the car with a scratch they took the deposit even though there was no quote to fix the car. That scratch would not cost 500 euros but they took it anyway. The radio did not work and the car was not provided with a full tank, it had 1/4 tank which meant that the first thing I had to do was find a petrol station. " The person I spoke to at Abbycars on the day I picked up the car was helpful and did his best. Unfortunately, they didn't accept debit cards for taking the deposit and charged me an extra £300.00!!! Which was completely unnecessary! I've hired cars before and never needed a credit card. Their cars are all supplied with the tank not full which is not usually how we pick up rental cars. They blamed this on the people returning the cars in that state, which I don't believe. The car that was assigned to me had just under half a tank and the radio did not work. There was also a lot of marks and scuffs which I took photos of as proof. The assistant also helped me and was meticulous in going through all the little marks. Returning the car was also a less than impressive experience. A stern-faced individual looked over the car without much to say. The whole experience was lacking basic manners, no please or thank you in Greek or in English and no small talk. I got the feeling they didn't need or appreciate my business. There's no excuse for the lack of manners, very unpleasant experience and the complete opposite to the person who gave me the car. He may not have been able to do anything about the ridiculous extra cost I had to pay but at least he managed to be courteous. Overall I wasn't impressed with Abbycar and I will never be using them again. Anyone thinking of using them should be aware of their policy of only accepting credit cards for the deposits. My hire car costs had doubled as a result of their policy. BEWARE - YOU MUST HAVE A CREDIT CARD!!! "

" Make sure to book extra excess insurance when going to Rhodes. Crazy drivers, no road rules, car can get easily damaged when parked in car park. "
" My best advise that I can give - make sure you have extra excess insurance when renting at Rhodes island. Most of cars are very tatty and drivers don't take care when driving. Parking in Rhodes town is very tricky and it is just too easy to get your car scratched when left in car park. One slight dent that I didn't notice until I was returning the car would have cost me 570 euros if not for extra insurance I had booked. Regarding the rental company itself, there seems to be 3 or even more car rental companies under different names: ABBYCAR, GreenMotion, DriveRentACar, but with the same manager, so something dodgy is going on.. Regarding car rental, I have booked and paid for Hyundai i30, however I received vw Polo, which is not equivalent size for i30, it would have had to be VW Golf or similar. They couldn't offer anything that size. Car itself had loads of scratches everywhere, so impossible to keep count if a new one appears or not. Staff were relatively efficient and not too pushy for their own extra insurance. "

" Your paperwork claims that the Abbycar rental office is 150 metres from the Corfu airport terminal. It is not. It is more like 500 metres plus, and across a busy main road. Another customer receiving their car at the same time as us raised this issue with Abbycar staff as they had quite a long walk with heavy luggage. Had to phone Auto Europe re the additional insurance as it wasn't listed on the paperwork & the Abby Cars Agent didn't understand what I was talking about. This was resolved, but what you are covered for needs to be made clearer on the booking documents I was a bit worried about the amount of scratches and dents on the car and carefully listed everything. Ironically I the rear office bumper on a metal fence and I pointed this out to the Agent when I returned the car and she chose not to ask for any payment for the repair, even though I had insurance. So, that evened things out and saved me time and effort! "

Unfortunately only car available, and as we had no other means of transport, i felt i had no option but to take the vehicle. I would recommend taking out the higher insurance due to very high excess and after driving in Santorini I could see why it was set so high as we were amazed that we completed our holiday without a scratch as every day was an adventure! But on the plus side car was in good order and we actually got a slightly bigger car than we asked for and price was very good compared to others!! " Driving abroad might seem daunting to a lot of people, they drive on the other side of the road! I have always found the roads to be very quiet other than in major town centres and parking may be an issue but as long as you have your site about you you should be fine. "

This is, I think, only the second time I have had to write to Autoeurope for assistance. I sincerely hope Autoeurope will intervene and in the longer run help to minimise what seems to me as 'cowboy' practice which is prevelant in this sector. Of course, I would be more than happy to bear the 645 euros if it can be shown to me that I am liable for this amount which is above the policy excess. "
" I am sure there is limited space in this column for me to give an official complaint and a request for Autoeurope to intervene and so, I shall try and keep this brief and hope Autoeurope will proactively reach out to me wth a formal contact point so that I can give a detailed account of what happened with my car hire. Essentially, I had an accident in the original car that I had picked up on 25 September and had to change to another on 27 September. I had damaged the front driver side wheel when it collided rather heavily against the kerb as the car skidded around a tight left hand downhill corner in what was then light drizzle in a built up area. It couldn't have been at a speed of more 30 kph. There was no problem with the exchange of cars and I was told I would be advised of the repair cost later. I was told and shown an account of the cost for the damage on returning the car on 4 October. It was a total of 1,645 Euros. Having caused the damaged I was quite ready to pay my share of the cost which to my understanding is limited to 1,000 Euros, the policy excess, which is clearly stated in the Rental Agreement. Neither the Abbey counter staff member nor subsequent manager whom the conter staff member contacted by phone could give me a clear explanation as to why they needed to charge me the full amount of 1,645 Euros. I naturally refused to pay the 645 Euros that exceeded the policy excess of 1,000. I pointed out I am an insurance professional with 30+ years experience and know what a policy excess means. In the end, the counter staff said they would only charge me the 1,000. I was given the related credit card transaction chit, but the staff refused to give me a copy of the repair cost statement of account. After protest, she only gave me a separately printed receipt for the 1,000 Euros. However, on reaching the airport, I received a notification from my American Express app that they had also debited 645 Euros. I immediately called the counter staff who denied making such a debit. I want to highlight a further dubious point which appeared on the repair statement of account which is perhaps another reason why they had refused to give me a copy after I had agreed to pay the 1,000 Euros (policy excess). The total amount stated had included "paint work" when there had been absolutely no damage to the body paintwork of the car! The damage was to the wheel and probably the related connecting rods because the wheel was wobbling noticably on reaching higher speeds following the accident. Anyway, unless Autoeurope and Abbey can point to a specific clause in the hire agreement that justifies me having to pay any amount above the 1,000 euros excess, I expect Autoeurope to assist in getting the 645 euros that has been deducted from my American Express account without authority. It infuriates me that Abbey had LIED to me when they said they would only deduct 1,000 euros against my card when they had subsequently made the second deduction of 645 euros behind my back and without my authorisation! "

The person examining the car for damage pointed to a scratch that was over painted by what I assume was an earlier issue tried to blame me for the scratch. I explained to her that it was overpainted and nothing to do with my hire. " Waited 25minutes at the airport for a shuttle bus. Wouldn't accept debit card so charged additional insurance of around £120 AND held a cash deposit. GPS broke on day 2 and when returned at the end of our trip was told no refund as should have called their emergency number. Complete rip off company. Don't use on all accounts. Pay the extra £30 and get somewhere near the airport and who won't charge hidden extras and deliver shoddy goods. "

" Well when we got to our destination we were told that we would lose £1000 excess and if we paid 130€ the excess would go down to 350€. The advert shows a new car the car I got was a Fiat punto with a fair bit of dents lack of power the air conditioning was poor only worked on one setting.The car smelt of Fuel Bear in mind the outside temp was 36 degrees. Overall quite expensive for the quality of the car. Best going to the major car hire places may pay a little more however you will get a newer car. "
