" When we arrived there was nobody at the counter but a sign saying it was closed. I asked the other rental companies staff and they advised that did not know. We waited for a while and then decided to walk to the car park where I found a member of staff from europecar. He told me he was on a break and I said the sign did not say that. The sign said the counter was closed. He told me that when he finished his break he would come and help. I thought that was very unusual as I tend to travel a lot and never I found an empty counter in a busy airport. "

There are four classes of SUV shown on your website: Compact, Intermediate, Standard & Full Size. Of these four, full size seems to be the largest, so I chose that, deliberately, but apparently your definition of "full size" does not translate to a large SUV...far from it. This is an appalling misrepresentation and as a result it was incredibly tight within the car, causing all sorts of stress. It's 100% false marketing and will be following-up if no one gets back to me based on this. "

" Not taking advantage of your customers would be a good start. I paid £550.54 / ~$1050AUD on 17.02.2024 to secure my booking of a "MG3 or Similar" vehicle. When I arrived to collect the car, I was told that there was no such vehicle available, so I would have to be "upgraded" to a larger vehicle. I was bombarded with information about excesses, charges, fees, and cars. None of this information was presented clearly, and when I asked for any kind of explanation, I was treated as though I were stupid. After a very arduous process of repeatedly seeking clarification and not receiving it, I gave in and agreed to pay an additional fee so that I could leave. Initially I was told it would be an additional $1100AUD, more than doubling what I had initially paid. After further unclear changes, it was put down to £936.98AUD / ~£490, which I paid at the desk. Forcing me to pay a ridiculous "upgrade" fee for a vehicle that I neither wanted nor booked is awful. It was not my fault that the vehicle that I'd hired was unavailable, and the fact that I was charged for it was shocking. Pressure sales tactics are clearly effective, and I absolutely was pressured into agreeing to these terms. On top of this, the car broke down near the end of my trip. I phoned the roadside assistance number that was provided to me, and I was unable to reach anyone. I also phoned the Europcar desk at Brisbane Airport, and the general Europcar Helpline, to repeatedly be palmed off from one person to another with no answer. It took my father phoning from the UK to supposedly get an engineer out to check the car. I was told at 19:00 that the engineer would be there by 20:30 at the latest. I waited a further hour, until 21:30, and there was no sign of them. I hadn't yet eaten, so I went back to my hotel room to order in. Numerous further phone calls revealed that the engineer arrived at around 22:00, and since I wasn't there, simply left. No attempt was made to contact me. Another callout was then arranged. I was told at 22:30 that they would then be with me by 23:30. I waited outside until 00:30, with no sign of any help. A lone female traveller sitting outside in the dark gone midnight, with nothing to show for it, wasn't really a great way to close off my holiday. On top of that, I could not complete the activities that I had planned for the following day since the car wasn't working. I took a chance on driving the car 2 days after the breakdown, only so that I could get it back to the airport to catch my flight home. I got lucky and the vehicle did make it back to Brisbane International, but I did not feel safe the entire journey. When I went to return the vehicle, there was nobody at the desk. There were a number of other rental companies nearby with staff members, and the Europcar desk was the only one without a member of staff. I have never been so dissatisfied by a company before, and I've never complained like this before either. The treatment that I received from start to finish was abysmal, and I will not allow this to go unreported. You need to do better. "

" Awful - would never use again. For context, my boyfriend (the named driver) had his wallet stolen the day before we're were due to fly from uk to Australia for 6 months. I rang auto Europe to assess what we needed to do re picking up the car given the named drivers physical licence had been stolen in his wallet. It was an extremely stressful 24 hours (as we also had all of our bank cards and travel money taken) and the man I spoke to at auto Europe was the most unhelpful, inconsiderate person I have ever dealt with. He informed me that there was nothing to be done and that we would need to cancel the booking, losing all of our money. I asked to be put on as the named driver instead, asking for some sympathy given the circumstances but was told that given it was less than 48 hours until car pick up, we couldn't change the named driver. He was extremely forceful about telling me I needed to cancel the booking as we would not be able to pick up the car, to the point where I had to shout down the phone at him and tell him under no circumstances to cancel the booking as I refused to believe there was nothing that could be done and that we just had to loose all our money. Funnily enough, I rang Europcar at Brisbane airport directly and explained the situation. They were extremely helpful and told us to not worry, turn up after our flight and they would see what they could do. We arrived and they happily and with ease changed the named driver on the booking, for no fee and then also added my boyfriend on as an additional driver when his new licence arrived. Again, not charging us the full fees for this and showing some sympathy in the circumstances. All of this goes to show that auto Europe were only concerned in keeping our money and have no interest in helping customers. Disgraceful service. "

" It would seem by using the rental broker Autoeurope I received a very poor service via Europcar and given a downgrade to a lesser car. I was extremely disappointed with the vehicle provided. "
" Booking via Autoeurope was good and found a competitive price for two weeks car rental. I received the Europcar voucher for a Hyundai i30 or similar. On collection I was given an MG XS, a lesser car in poor condition. I was told this was an upgrade despite being a much more inferior vehicle. The car provided had numerous warning lights on and during the rental exceeded its next service interval. On returning the car, the Europcar colleague agreed that the MG XS is not an upgrade to the i30 and is a very poor car, especially for a two week rental when covering significant mileage. "

" I arrived at Auckland International Airport for a 5pm pick up from Bargain rentals. The flight was a little late so by the time I got to the phone to make contact with the shuttle bus it was 6.10pm I called the number and an automated reply informed me they were closed. It went on to ask me to leave my name phone number at number of passengers so and to go to the shuttle bus pick up place at the International terminal. It said they would send a message. Two hours later after 5 further attempts to make contact by phone and asking for help from Information at Auckland Airport we gave up and rented a car from Avis for 24 hours so at least we could get to our accommodation. This cost me $120 aussie dollars extra. Next day I drove the Avis rental to the Bargain Rentals location which was open. They gave no help re the previous nights attempt to connect the car. They said it was all in the booking details. I double checked. It said it closed at 6.00pm but made no suggestions how to connect. At the Rental location they said I had booked two cars with them. I did not only one. Ive checked to see if I had made a mistake but I cannot find more than one voucher, this one. They said they would reduce the rental to two days but as it was prepaid I would have to contact you for a refund. I told them I would need to return the Avis vehicle to the International arrivals drop off and requested a curtesy bus to collect me. This was 3.45pm. I dropped the car and went to the pick up area. Half an our later no bus. I went back inside and rang the number. Same recorded message. They said they would send a txt telling me where to get the bus. Nothing came, no txt, no bus. Finally after an hour and half I gave up and went to the taxi rank to get a taxi, at which point I saw a Bargain curtesy bus. I ran to flag him down, passengers saw me and told him to stop. He sped off. I ran back to the shuttle bus at International arrivals. I am 70 years old it was 37c and not easy. He at the far end of the park, saw me coming and made no attempt to come any closer. I finally made it it the bus. He asked my name which was wrong and the he said, he had been waiting at the Domestic terminal from 3.15pm This was a lie since I had only arrived at the Bargain location at 3.45. In front of other angry passengers he humiliated me about being a whinging Pom, loud enough for passengers to hear. Finally 5.35pm I go the the Bargain rental location and got a car. They said I had two bookings which one would I use and they would not reimburse me for the lost day. I and other passengers complained about the attitude of the driver. I was absolutely disgusted by the attitude of Bargain rentals. I intend writing to them but to have any hope of getting my one day less rental refunded they said I had to write to you. I have used Auto Europe for years and never had a problem with a pick up like this. Your service has been exemplary. "

" Whilst there was no issue with the actual car the problem experienced was at the Sydney Airport International Terminal where only Europecar was unmanned. There was a note to say that the desk was no longer manned at that customers should proceed to Domestic Terminal. This was the 1st problem. When calling the number advertised for assistance I spoke to two different people as I was unhappy with the 1st information that after a 25 hour flight, loaded with baggage for three weeks, I had to get myself and wife over to domestic terminals. When calling again, to establish how to get to domestic, I was advised to use the airport bus service. I eventually went to the information counter at the Sydney Airport to enquire why Europecar was unmanned and they advised that it should be manned. A call was made by the Information staff and lone behold a person was available and opened the counter. The next issue was that there was only one person, all your competition had two people manning the desks. It took 30 minutes to process my vehicle pickup. I arrived around 7am and it took three hours before I got a car. The poor customers behind me who were 5 deep had a very long wait. "

" It was dark on my arrival after a very long flight and obviously keen to get on my way to my final destination. Took some time to work out how the mechanics of the car worked...never easy when it is dark. Only realised once I got going that the tank was NOT full and only 3/4 full but too late to do anything about it once I had left. In the daylight the car wasn't very clean... empty pop bottle found under driver's seat and just generally not clean in the interior. The boot stopped opening after a few days which wasn't great but not worth the inconvenience of reporting. On drop off I had to ask for the car to be checked otherwise the single female employee who was obviously in a rush to deal with several customers just wanted to take the keys and said providing everything was in order I would get my deposit back. " Due to being stuck in Australia for an extended period we had to extend the hire period. This was done over the phone with the Brisbane office no problem. I asked for an email to be sent to me with a price of how much extra this was going to be, and was told my email address which was correctly read to me over the phone. I have never received an email, we have returned the car 4 days ago are now back in the UK and have had no corresponding email from the office or any contact whatsoever on the rental price or return of the hire car. Thanks for a good car though, and the phone number on the door for taxi to take you to the airport didn't work either, luckily we had the Uber app, or we would have missed our flight home! "

" We were a bit confused with the pick up instructions but after calling the company's number, we were told to go outside and wait at a bus stop for a minibus to pick us up. It was convenient and we only waited less than 10 mins. When we got to the office, the lady who dealt with us was efficient but not that welcoming or friendly. Might be because of it was later in the day (around 8pm). We then went to the rental car, the multi storey car park was not very lit. We took a vid of the car both inside and out for any damage. The car was OK but not very well looked after. The next morning in the day light, I was horrified to find a used surgical mask in a gap between the passenger seat and the hand brake! We were in the middle of the Covid-19 outbreak! It was disgusting!! I had to clean the whole interior of the car with disinfectant! I also took a few photos of what I found and the state of the car in daylight. Just appalling! Never again we will use Eastcoast! "

" The arrival details were incomplete, they did not say that you had to call Ace and they would collect you, we wasted 30 minutes walking around the airport trying to find a non existant desk. Also the number we were given was incomplete. The UK staff were not at all helpful. We also discovered when collecting the vehicle that the insurance was not with ACE but with Auto Europe and any damage we would have to pay the first $4500 and reclaim it from you. Very poor staff and communications "

" I have already given feedback about the tolls charged whilst in and around Melbourne. Hertz rental cars are pre-registered with the toll company (which is not the case with other rental companies) so there was no way to avoid them being automatically charged (I asked but was told no) and then sent on by Hertz PLUS AN AUD $38 ADMINISTRATION FEE WHICH IS OUTRAGEOUS. It appears from my credit card that the total tolls incurred were about $25 so their fee is 150% of the tolls, which is a disgrace. I cannot view their invoice as the link to their Journey Portal doesn't accept the only input I have to make, my date of birth, which I am pretty sure I have correct. They have ignored my complaint, which I have made at least three times presumably on the basis that I will just go away. I will never use them again and am happy to tell others about my experience as well. Their charge is completely out of proportion to the tolls incurred and the effort involved in on-charging them, which will have been automated of course. There was no mention of the administration fee at the time of booking, which if I had known about would have made them much more expensive than other firms who would therefore have got my business. $10 maybe acceptable but $38 is a joke; they charge it because they can and of course most Hertz users are companies and they don't care because they are not paying personally. "

" Despite Hertz imposing a A$70 cancellation fee AutoEurope impose a 48 hour notice period, which although I was outside by 90 minutes - unfortunately the family emergency which prevented me not only picking up this car but flying from the UK to Australia wasn't timed appropriate to cancellation policies - Autoeurope pocket the entire rental amount - which is plain profiteering seeing as their obligation to Hertz was A$70. So no I wouldn't use Autoeurope again when booking direct with a rental company affords better protection. "

" We've hired cars at three locations and overall the experience has been excellent and hassle free. Seattle, Kona Hawaii and Tasmania. In total we travelled around 8000km (5000 miles). "
" At check-in I was told the fault 06 came up meaning my credit card was probably blocked for security reasons. My other credit card from another bank was the same. We spent an hour trying to contact our bank without success. My wife said try her card. There was another man present at check-in and he immediately said the problem was there end and they could not connect to their system. He would put it through later in the day. Very unprofessional. We had a puncture on Day 2 on an unsealed road. I changed the wheel. We called into Thrifty at Launceston Airport and they were brilliant. They replaced the car and we were off in no time at all. Drop-off was easy as you locked the car and dropped the key off at their desk. Overall very happy with Thrifty in Tasmania. "

There was a long queue and it took an hour and a half to get car We where just given the keys and told where the car was, there was no walk round or condition check done and the car was parked in a dark corner of the underground car park. We left the car park and drove to our destination 4 hours away. During the drive we could not get any radio reception. On arrival we then saw that the Aeriel antanae was missing When we returned the car we notified the drop off clerk who said we should fill out a claim form. I refused because we did not do the damage. I have emailed europcar direct and sent them pictures of the damage taken when we noticed it. Their level of customer service was unacceptable "

" The vehicle was unpleasant to drive. It has covered 95,000 miles and the gearbox is terrible. We had not used East Coast before. We felt it had not been made clearer to us that we needed to phone you on landing in Cairns to arrange a pick up service. We expected you to be inside the airport. We have also used AVIS, Enterprise and Alamo whilst in Australia and we have preferred thwir processes. Although staff were efficient and friendly, the process isn't as good as the vehicle was poor, so we would default to another provider first in future. "

" We were versy disspoinnted to find out the day of collection that were not actually collecting the car from Perth airport as booked on website but that we were to be collected at Perth airport by a shuttle and taken to an office in Perth city somewhere. This is not what we wanted! Not only was the location for collection an issue but we arrived at the airport at 9.15am for our 10am collection and were still at the airport at 11.40am due to a driver not being able to find us, however following 3 phone calls to the office it was confirmed we were in the correct place. This delay cause issues for our family as we needed to be at a wedding venue which was 1.5 hours away and unfortunately as a result of the car not being at Perth airport to collect around 10 am and us not being collected by the shuttle until nearer midday we were late!! Not at all what I would have expected from your complany. We have since had an email from your company to say there was a set of keys found in the vehicle upon return and asked for us to call the office. At this point we were in Thailand and replied explaining that we were not able to call but asked if a photo of the keys could be sent to us, that was nearly 2 weeks ago now and we still have not had a reply! " Vehicle, registered in QLD not SA, had almost 100,000kms on the clock, worn/torn carpet in driver's footwell, lots of minor scratches and scrapes and an annoying dashboard rattle at speeds over 80kph. The gear change and clutch were stiff not as one would expect from a Hyundai. When returning the car I mentioned these matters to counter staff and was told 'it's a rental - they get mistreated and anyway you're not paying Hertz prices!' The return shuttle to the airport was a farce! We waited for 20 minutes for 2 minbus renters to go and refuel their vehicles to avoid the refueling surcharge. We could have been dropped at the airport and the shuttle back at base while staff were 'faffing' around like headless chickens. We have always used Atlas thru Economy Car Rentals in the past and they have never let us down. We will go back to them next time. "

" we was late arriving to pick the car up due to our flight being delayed. But on arrival at east coast rentals it wasn't ready and had to wait another half an hour whilst they cleaned it. One of the team checked the car over with us and showed us the address to return the car to on the reverse side of the check sheet and not to bring it back to the pick up point. On arrival at the drop of point there was nobody there. We called the number on our documents and was advised this closed at 12 noon on a Saturday and they couldn't understand why they had told us to take it there we needed to take it back to the pick up point, which was another 15 min drive. We asked the woman at the call centre to advise the office that we was on our way as we had a plane to catch and therefore had a further delay making us very anxious. On arrival the person was there who had told us where to drop the car off he chuckled and said "who told you to go there" I reminded him it was HIM. Very disrespectful with no apology from any of the staff. We was very dissatisfied with the service and won't be using them again. "

" We arrived from London to Melbourne. I called and was advised our car was ready, they collected us but then couldn't find the car. Time passed, we asked for an update which we didn't really get, after about 30 minutes we received another car. We specifically asked for a manual but this was an automatic. I felt going through the whole process of getting another car would break me (after the long flight). The staff didn't seem much bothered. The car itself was ok throughout the rental. Drop off was rubbish. The staff snatched the key off me, took the car and left us waiting. This happened to others as well. We had some things we needed to complete at the airport so after about 10 minutes of standing waiting I asked about the transfer. The staff member told me it would be 7 minutes but at the same time was radioing to find the location of the driver. We ended up getting an Uber at our expense. This is a true example of you get what you pay for and we will be staying well clear of Autoeurope and whomever they decide to work with in the future. "

" I am writing in the hope that you will change your procedures to advise customers, before they book, exactly how the rule 'Cars are not permitted on unpaved roads' (in your T&Cs) could adversely affect the enjoyment of their holiday. In WA access to most National Parks is via unpaved roads so I could not enter them. As soon as I realised this, I was so far away from a Hertz office that I couldn't change the car. Fitzgerald River, Mount Roe, D'Entrecasteaux and Cape Arid National Parks were some of those where I went 100km or more out of my way just to gain partial access. Neither I nor my wife were happy holidaymakers. Please don't let others suffer in this way – tell them they need a 4x4 if they are going to enjoy their holiday properly – and explain 'unpaved roads' to them in detail! "

I ended up having to take a smaller model as this was the only type of car they had available. I asked the counter staff to inform me when the intermediate car would became available & was told Xmas day. So I had to give up 2 hours of my Xmas evening to head back to the airport to collect the car I should have received from day 1. Absolutely disgraceful that this even occurred especially when the car was paid for up front. " No issue with the car or value for money from the rental fee alone however the counter staff tried to sell us a full tank of fuel (clearly stating that at 130c/l this was far cheaper than the open market. I did not take this option and the first petrol station we saw 500m from the thrifty depot was 114c/l. We were also pushed to take a damage waiver (£230) which was very expensive compared to our previous rental through autoeurope last week - (east coast rentals - Cairns). No one talked through the Ts&Cs and having stopped for some food an hour later I read the detailed Ts&Cs. Realising the 'scam' I phoned Thrifty to cancel the damage waiver only to be told I couldn't do this by phone or email and would have to return to the original depot. Not really an option one hour into a three hour journey with 3 young children. Very disappointed and surely in breach of my consumer rights. Finally we paid a refundable 'deposit' on taking the vehicle which was actually taken from my card (rather than staying as a pending token'. On return of the vehicle Thrifty took 4 days to issue a refund by which time the exchange rate had changed leaving me £8 short of my original deposit! "

" This feedback is solely directed to the company Auto Europe, and not East Coast Cars. Auto europe provides a completely unacceptable service and unreasonable attitude towards its customers. The staff provide conflicting information and advice, and an unwillingness to help resolve issues. If you cannot 100% guarantee your travel plans will run on time, such as delayed flights, DO NOT book with Auto Europe as they will leave you stranded in another country and WILL NOT make an effort to help you. They will then likely quote their terms and conditions at you about not giving a refund, when you ask only to pick up the car you booked and paid for one day later. It will result in you paying twice for your hire car, and working up international phone call bills as you try to speak to someone who will only tell you something different than the last person. They are even unwilling to let customers talk to a manager. I have tried to make a formal complaint, yet have not had any response or even acknowledgement in 10 days. My experience with Auto Europe ruined my holiday plans and made me use my holiday money to pay twice for the car I booked through them. DO NOT use this company, it's not worth booking through them as it will only cost you more money - book direct with a hire car company. "

I suspect that booking through your agency deters companies from spurious allegations as it would quickly become apparent if one company reported an out of the ordinary number of increased extra charges etc "
" The young lady working on her own at pick up but with no other customers gave no eye contact and spoke down to her computer keyboard. As a result the combination of my age-related presbycusis and the background noise made communication difficult when it needn't have been. Having said that, the rest of the experience was hassle-free as it had been with Europcar in Auckland the previous 3 days. In both cases, the cars had some minor paint damage which had not been mentioned at pick-up. The cars both in Auckland and Brisbane were collected from a dark outdoor car park and the scrapes were only apparent the following day. This didn't bother me but having had problems with cheaper Portuguese car hire companies in the past claiming old blemishes were new I was a little concerned. (Fortunately on the two occasions when this has come up I had collected the cars in daylight and photographed them comprehensively) Anyway, the drop off was keys into a box and I received an email from Europcar without comment and I would use them again. " First impression count and the lady that served me in Sydney Airport was unfriendly. The car was fine although I was under the impression that a Hyundai i20 or Golf would be available. I had to pay extra for the sat nav too which is way to expensive for the quality of the device rented. It was very poor. "

" My booking did not go without a problem as I needed a pick up in Melbourne and drop off in Sydney. This is what I thought I had booked, only to discover that the booking made was for drop off in same city. I then had to phone to change it and the lady operator was very helpful but informed me that I would have to pay extra for the Sydney drop off at the time I collected the car from Melbourne. She amended the booking and sent me a new voucher with the correct details. I also purchased the additional insurance cover, however the Europcar office seemed unaware of this as they tried to sell it to me again. "

I did struggle a bit with the member of staff in Melbourne, partly due to my poor hearing (I wear fairly conspicuous hearing aids) and partly to his attitude (perhaps he had not had a good morning). Having prepaid for additional insurance cover, I did not expect to be asked if I wanted what I assume was same additional insurance again. Not worth the premium unless it works! Your emailed confirmation didn't give the number of the (Melbourne, Bridge St) destination office - a good way of dissuading customers from calling you, but not so good if, as a customer, you have queries en route. Website answering systems rarely work, only serve to annoy and aren't practical when you're on the move. Staff each end were pleasant and helpful. Would also be useful to indicate what bodywork blemishes are notable and which are not - always a source of anxiety to customers picking up and checking for extant scratches. "
