" Do not use Avis Italia – they are scammers My wife and I hired a Mitsubishu Space in late September at Sicily's Palermo airport. When we picked the car up I noticed that it had a few minor marks and scratches and started taking pictures of the (white) bodywork. An Avis employee came up and told me I didn't need to take pictures because "we know this car". I carried on photographing anyway but I guess his comment must have distracted me because I ended up missing a few places. In retrospect, a red flag should have gone up and I should have done a video, because when we returned the car a week later to Catania airport, the guy on the reception desk took a full set of pictures. He claimed that several marks – all tiny ones and including one that he claimed was a dent and that I maintain was part of the contour of the bodywork – had been added to the car during our hire period. To the best of my knowledge, only one mark was new, a small scuff mark on the back bumper right next to a virtually identical mark that was there already – and was photographed by me- when we picked the car up. In other words, Avis is happy to hire out the car with small marks and indentations on the bodywork, but still charged me nearly £1,300 – including a fee for taking photos of the car - for damage when I returned it. So I would bet another £1,300 that none of my money will actually be spent on repairs, and would challenge Avis to prove otherwise – or that their outfit on Sicily isn't operating what my experience suggests is essentially a scam. I would also argue that the car was not serviced properly before I picked it up as the brakes started making a loud noise – worn pads? - several days into our hire period. On this basis I have I have instructed my credit card company to contest the charge and, since I have had no response from Avis several days after emailing them a letter of complaint, will also be referring the matter to the industry ombudsman. For me, this has been an expensive lesson learnt, and I would strongly recommend avoiding Avis in Italy even (or especially) if they appear to be offering a better deal than their rivals. "

We tried on five occasions to call the number given to elicite help in making the urgent last minute changes regarding the return of the car ( see above) on 4 of those, we were cut off half way through the call. On the 5 th occasion I was told that you could not help. In conclusion, I don't think we will use Auto Europe again to book a car hire as there is no onward support. "

" Our experience with AVIS at Stazione Centrale Milano hasn't been satisfactory, especially considering the high price we were charged. In the week before the rental, we were reminded several times by email and on the phone to check-in online to speed up the process of picking up the car. We did so, answering online all the questions about whether we wished to purchase additional services or coverage. On arrival at Milano Centrale we went to the AVIS office just at the entrance of the station, and they told us that we didn't need to do anything there, since the online check-in, and that we only needed to go and pick-up the car. The pick-up point is a bit far, but worse, the entrance is not suitable for pedestrians in general, never mind whether you are carrying big suitcases! On the other hand, other car rental companies like Hertz are located on the upper floor of the same building with easy access by lift. At the pick-up point desk, they forced me to be on the phone with the desk lady at the office where we had just been told we didn't need to do anything because I checked in online already. Firstly, she tried to give us a 3-door car when we booked a 5-door car. She then tried to over-sell us a bigger car for an extra daily charge, and then she tried to sell us the insurances that I already declined when I did the check in online. What a waste of time in 35-degree heat! Finally, the car wasn't in great condition: the windscreen had a big chip on the main wind screen. We feared it might crack completely. It didn't happen, luckily, but it was such a nuisance for visibility anyway! The entertainment system was also a pain, we weren't allowed to connect our own devices by Bluetooth because too many have been already connected by previous customers, so it was locked to new devices. Therefore, we couldn't listen to our own music for the entirety of our holiday, only to the radio. From AVIS in Milan, you would expect a better value for money. Next time we will be happy to pay a little extra and go with Hertz. "

It concerns me that we paid well over the odds for the car and whilst we got a refund on the second driver (because presumably Avis had taken that money directly) redress opportunities seem limited. I would be very reluctant to use Avis again (and Pisa is an airport through which I travel regularly). "
" We had booked a 'special' compact automatic but when we arrived at the front desk were offered a Toyota Corolla and told it was in the same class. We were offered an Audi A3 but this involved an additional charge which we hadn't budgeted for. They also tried to sell us Sat Nav which was integral to the car anyway. In the parking lot discovered that a Toyota Corolla was an estate (who knew?), which was wholly unsuitable for where we staying. The parking lot staff found us a Renault Clio which was both automatic and compact but not 'special'. We were too tired to do anything more and drove off it. The parking lot staff were great; the front desk woman had an abrasive manner and arguably if as the seller you can't supply what was ordered the onus is on you to make good, not fob the buyer off with something less than was paid for. We should have argued this but just too tired (something I suspect they rely on). I have already fed this back to Avis who very swiftly responded to the negative feedback so that side of customer service is okay. "

However, we were provided with chains as listed on the hire agreement. " I have always found AutoEurope easy to deal with and are my first port of call in car hire. It would be good if they could influence the quality of service from the rental companies but I suspect this will not happen. "
" In summary the problems are as follows:- At the desk there was a large queue with a single and slow operator. There was a second person in the office who did not assist. It took 90 minutes to get a vehicle, about the same as the flight. All the other operators had similar number of customers but were able to manage them efficiently. The car was cleaned on the outside but had not been cleaned internally and was not COVID safe despite your policy. Photographs are attached. There was nobody to complain to save the person at the desk who still had a large queue to deal with. Most critically the windscreen washers were not operational on the return trip from Corvara (Dolomites). This required the use of snow from the side of the road every few kilometres to allow vision, the combination of no vision via the windscreen and having to stop in the dark representing an extremely dangerous situation. The ambient temperature was -1C, nothing exceptional for December. I did add -70C fluid bought from a service station to the washer bottle in the car but to no avail. Function stated a few kilometres from the airport. I surmise that normal screen wash had not been used, but only water. The last 2 points represent negligent conduct and the latter could easily have resulted in the death of customers. "

The booking details were also confusing as they said the hire was in terminal whereas it was not. On arrival we were told the booking had been cancelled and although we had paid in full in advance and the car had obviously been rebooked as it was no longer available, no refund was offered. Auto Europe also advised they could not help obtain any reimbursement. We were unable to rebook a car for our holiday until 3 days later and the total additional cost of the new arrangements were approx £700 due to taxi requirement of EU160 plus new rental cost of c.£550. Whilst the original error was ours, the way this was handled was very poor in our view and whatever the contract may say, it feels entirely inequitable that a customer should forfeit 12 days car hire which has been paid for in advance and be left without any vehicle option. The car i was allocated was quite basic Renault Twingo, a small car> it had 50K on the clock and in average condition, and could have been cleaner inside, but we had no problems with it for the week we had hired it. Car collection was pretty straight forward in the airport. Standard paperwork was processed but my copy of the form I signed was unintelligible because the carbon copies and the handwriting made it almost impossible to read the detail on the form. But we had not problems and the car was dropped off where we picked it up from, with the keys 'posted' through a letter box at the Avis kiosk, which was closed when we arrived to get our flight. To be honest I would far rather leave the car keys with a person who cold validate with me, that the car was returned in the same condition, before i leave the country, so that any issues can be dealt with there and then. It took another two days before they contacted me. They eventually contacted me and requested that I return the vehicle and to fill it up. Bearing in mind my holiday was being wrecked. In short: - spent an hour standing in the queue waiting to be seen. - when I finally got to the front they told me the convertible I specifically booked (and paid extra for) was not available and that I had to take the only car they had available. No refund or compensation, no options for resolving their mistake, they just couldn't care less. - I called Auto Europe for help, they were totally uninterested in getting me any sort of refund for ending up with a worse car that I didn't want. Guy on the phone was pretty rude. - I returned the car a week later, fully fuelled, but a day or two later Avis charged me over £100. When I rang them they said it was because the car had no fuel in it. Outright lie. I'm now in the middle of some admin-heavy complaints procedure. I wouldn't use Avis or Auto Europe again. I've been using Auto Europe for years but will never use them again. "

" If your flights times change and you need to change collection and drop off times be aware that the "free" alteration service that is advertised simply means that Auto Europe won't charge you for the change. What happens is that they essential cancel your current booking and re-book with the new conditions. If prices have changed dramatically that could cost you a lot, on the other hand it could be a lot cheaper if prices drop. "

The car had a windscreen that was filthy on the inside (Extra cleansing due to the Covid 19 pandemic? This was fine as you do spend a bit of time talking through things when picking up a rental car, and this ensured the safety of staff and customers. I had no choice to put 6 large luggages and 3 adults into that mini car with some of the luggages set out on our laps. And then I started to see the 54 bux administration fees from them for apparently giving our info to the local citation dept. Complete rip off. The only good thing is the mini car had airplay and at times I did appreciate the small cars in narrow gully of amalfi, but had to put up with the adults sitting in the car constantly yelling at me for having large luggage on their lap for the next 1500 miles. One small issue is the quotes don't highlight which ones have full insurance from the supplier vs excess protection from autoeurope. One has to read the detail of all the quotes. " On Pick Up, it was lovely to find out that we had been upgraded. However at Drop off, the Avis member of staff who checked the car, told us we had scratched the wheel rim on driver side, front. As we had done very low mileage, with the car parked each night in a private driveway, and driving 20 mins to the private beach parking every day, there was no way we had come next or near a high pavement to enable the wheel rim to be damaged. I also would have known immediately had I hit the kerb. I refused to accept responsibility as I knew I had done NO damage. The Avis guy told me he was going to write up a report. At this time, I told him I would not sign such a report. He went into the office then returned to tell me that he had phoned a colleague who had told him that the wheel rim had been previously damaged but had not been identified by them on collection. The front spoiler, which sits low, had been badly scratched on both the left and right. I suspect the wheel rim damage was possibly caused at the same time. This seemed to me to be attempt to have me pay for something I didn't do. This was very disappointing. I would have rated Avis 10 had this incident not spoiled my expereince. "

" I will be submitting a formal complaint seperately but it was the worst car hire experience i have ever experienced. The avis rental stand at Milan Central Station is pure chaos and we had to wait over 2 hours past our selected collection time before i finally kicked up enough of a fuss to get taken to the "preffured" customer desk to get served. Once there I was told the autoeurope warrenty i had paid for was not valid and i had to pay for the avis one or i couldnt take the car, that was an additional £100+, and also that i had to pay the taxes again and the one way fee again even though i had already paid with auto europe and could prove that, they said it didnt count. With a huge que behind us and a possible another wait of 2+ hours if I said no and tried to contact auto europe we had no choice but to agree and pay the additional fees. If you google the reviews of Avis Milan you will see they dont just do this to me, they do it to everyone. I dont know how a company like this can still be trading and Auto europe still work with them, its criminal. After we finally got the car 3 hours later than planned no one allowed us to check it over for scratches, no one to show us how the car worked or how to drive. 5 days later and the full charges with avis are still pending on our credit card, including 70 euros for petrol charge we we returned the car with a full tank. We then walked to collect vehicle and spare wheel was on front left side and no cover. " I had booked a Peugeot 3008 which is a large estate SUV with a boot to enable me to carry enough luggage for 5, when, after queueing for 1 1/2 hours we eventually get to the desk I was provided with the keys for a Mercedes GLA which is essentially an A class SUV that is clearly much smaller! they were able to provide me with a RenaultEstate SUV only if I parted with more money first. they wanted to €25 per day eventually we got the same sized car that was requested for an additional €15 per day I was not at all satisfied by the experience!! " Avis Palermo are a joke. Two hours+ waiting to get a car. The car had no navigation disk and the GPS given was without any mounting mechanism, so useless (used Google Maps instead). Three days into the rental we had to make a three hour round trip for them to add 'Adblue' additive or the car would stop working. But worst of all, Avis trying to charge 690 euros for no reason at all, and now having to fight to get this returned. If you read Avis at Palermo are crooks, believe it and avoid them. "

" Terrible pick up. I had a 3.5 hour wait at Rome airport to collect the car. Of 8 counters they had between 2-3 open at varying times. Only after my 3.5 hour wait and it was my turn did they have all 8 desks open. When I was finally seen they did not have the car I had booked - a Jeep Renegade. I appreciate it's always "or similar" but the car I was given was not similar. I had changed my reservation with Auto Europe to get a more spacious car - at an extra cost, but the car I was given (Alfa Romeo Giulietta) was pretty much the same size as the one I had booked originally, so why did I bother paying more... ?? I was told by Avis the car category I had booked throughout Auto Europe (compact SUV) did not exist. A Giulietta is a hatchback and not in anyway a SUV. I tried to argue this at the desk but given I had waited so long, by this point I just needed to get on the road and start my holiday "

" I found Avis, on arriving at their desk on collection day, too keen to attent to sell additional charges, despite I having understood that I had paid the full cost with yourselves at the outset when booking. The car I had asked for, a Renault Clio, was not available. A Fiat was provided instead, but that was not a major issue. But immediately I was being asked to pay for additional insurance cover up to 400 euro, saying i would be liable for any damage caused, an offer which i declined, and there was an attempt to extract more money for a sat nav which i initially asked for and then asked to remove from the booking with yourselves. Only on checking with her supervisor did the assistant finally agree not to charge me for something I did not wish to have. She claimed the request for a sat nav was on the booking form. I was then offered a towing service for an additional fee, which I accepted, though not sure I should have. My wife went as guarantor using her credit card as i did not have the PIN for my own card available to pay for the additional fee and she was charged around 90 euro for this privilege as she then had to become a named driver, even though she had no intention of driving the car and never did. None of this experience was encouraging or expected. The lady at the Avis counter suggested I should have booked with them directly to avoid confusion about additional fees. This did not make sense as they appear content to take recommendations through your agency. "

" I am furious with Auto Europe as after paying additional for fully comprehensive insurance online when I reserved my vehicle, I was told at the AVIS counter that this was not valid and I would have to buy fully comprehensive insurance again. I therefore bought insurance from Auto Europe that I did not receive. When I queried this with Auto Europe, I was told that the insurance was sold to me by a third party and I would not be able to do anything about it. " The car booked was severely damaged and broke down soon after collection. The gearbox broke down and I could not use any other gear other than the 2nd one. I was likely able to drive back fairly soon despite the heavy traffic in Naples. Fortunately, I did not manage to go on the motorway which avoided for me and family (2 toddlers) to get stuck on the road at 10 pm. "ironically", the staff presented the car has recently serviced which was obviously a lie. I had to take another car at an extra cost of £60. I will not book with Avis anymore. When returning the car there was no Avis member to check the condition of the car and fuel level (returned full), so we went to the Avis desk in the airport, spoke with the same representative as before when collecting the car. He told us he was the only member of staff working that day, couldn't check the car, but all would be fine as we only had the car two days. This is the only aspect of the hire we are not happy with as the car should have been checked and signed off upon return. "

" When Avis were closed we rang Auto Europe who were not at all helpful. We said that our only option was to hire another car that evening and return the next day to pick up the car we had originally hired. We rang to confirm the next morning and were informed that the contract had been cancelled, despite the fact that we had paid in advance, and that we would be charged £190 as a result. We spoke to a very unhelpful and obstructive "Philippa" who refused to admit that there was a supervisor and could not have been more awkward - I have seldom spoken to someone more adamant not to help in any way with the problem we now faced with four children without a rental car that we had booked weeks before. We eventually did speak to a manager, despite Philippa's best efforts, and he agreed to reduce the penalty to £50 but still claimed that they could not provide an equivalent replacement car. We hired the replacement car from Sicily by Car (who you also use) at a significantly increased cost as it was all last minute. The additional cost was at least £400 and that doesn't take account of the cost of being on the telephone for ages - at one point we had been in Italy for 19 hours and had spent 1.5 hours on the telephone to Auto Europe! And then there is the stress of being lied to by Philippa and generally having to sort out the mess ourselves and without any help from you. I have used Auto Europe on many occasions in the past so am particularly upset to be treated in this way. I look forward to your comments and would like you to treat this as a COMPLAINT. "

" The car pick up and drop off at Comiso is only manned by one guy who does everything including going to wash the cars etc. This means he was nowhere to be seen for 10 mins when we needed to pick up and we also waited 10 mins when we dropped off. The general condition of the car was good though the gear changing (Mercedes class A) was often quite clunky when coming down in gears. It's also worth noting that the autoeurope website still gives directions to call a couple of numbers on arrival to arrange a shuttle. These numbers no longer work and it's only when one comes out at the exit that it's clear Avis now have an office on terminal. This needs to be clearly communicated to the customer. I would also be more likely to choose Avis on par of prices with another company if it was clear on the website that the pick up in now at the airport as I am likely to forget this next time I fly there. We repeatedly said no she brought the cost of the upgrade down from €80/ day to €15 we still didn't want the so called upgrade she then tried to make us purchase duplicate extra cover which we'd already purchased from AutoEurope again we declined so then she tried to sell us breakdown cover. The whole experience was unpleasant & hostile all we wanted to do was collect the car we had ordered which was a large estate. She gave us a small estate which was a ghastly car a Renault Megane. We waited an hour before being served and her hard selling wasted a further 30 minutes of our time. All in all very unpleasant. Certainly wouldn't recommended Avis or Rebecca at Pisa airport. "

Overall I was disappointed with Avis; I chose the brand as I thought the customer experience would be slicker. It most definitely was not. " I aske for a satnav when I hired. This had to be arranged at the pick up. The staff member confirmed that I had asked for one. He told me it would cost 486 euros for the month. Seemed like an excessive amount but I really needed one so agreed. Gave me the contract and said that Super damage waiver was included as I had rented the satnav.I said that I didnt need it as I already had cover. He said it wasnt costing me any more. He wrote GPS next to the super damage waiver line on the contract. I now realise he mislead me as it appears thet the satnav was included free with super damage waiver. To add insult to injury I realised, after leaving the airport, that the ford focus I had hired had a built in satnav - so I had two! I am really unhappy with this. "

" Despite clearly stating (and having confirmed in your documents) that we wished to collect the car at 13:30 - and the documents saying that Avis Ancona is open all day, when we arrived at 13:00 they were closed. There was still an agent behind the counter, but she refused to serve us. We had to wait 2.5 hrs until 15:30 when they reopened. Fortunately, we were collecting a car, not dropping it off before getting the train! Even when they reopened, the check-in took ages. The directions as to where the car was parked were very vague (50 metres according to the agent) We hunted around for the car for quite a while, ending up returning to the office. In the end, they had to run us to the car which was over 500 metres away and not visible from the road. Highly unsatisfactory. "

The female who assisted me in the office provided no eye contact, refused to provide me with a copy of my rental contact and when I requested the form to note any vehicle damage I was told it was in the vehicle. There was no form in the vehicle to note damage at the time of picking up the car. When I returned the vehicle the gentleman who helped me was prompt, helpful and very customer service orientated. "

They also had additional costs like adding 15 euros for refuelling when I have brought the vehicle back with a full tank. So arriving with a voucher with 149 euros paid to you for car hire and ending up with another 400 euros costs plus the 300 euros for the damage ends up with me feeling upset and unsure how to proceed with my next car hire. " When I arrived to pick up the car I was offered an upgraded car for extra cost. The cost was not very clear and turned out to be more than I had expected. A Sat Nav was included without extra cost which was a help. The sales person then wanted to add considerable costs to cover accidents and personal accident cover. I already have a separate policy to cover these so declined them. I did take a roadside assistance cover. I examined the car for any damage before leaving and all looked in order. When I returned the car a scratch on the underside of the front apron was discovered and I was charged almost 300 euros. I am almost 100% certain that this did not happen while I had the car. I cannot say that I had looked at that particular spot as I picked up the car. I get the impression that they were not happy that I did not take their extra cover. A very good value car hire from Auto Europe was turning out to be quite the opposite with all the extra costs. I almost feel that they knew of this damage and that it gave them the opportunity to recover some of the money they wanted to take from me when I took on the car. I have used Auto Europe on many occasions and have not encountered this price hike strategy before. Whether this is an Avis strategy or not I do not know, but this whole encounter has left me very unhappy. I an in the process of recovering the 300 euros from my other insurance company. "

We were given a Mercedes A class, which I notice you advertise as having space for 1 large and 1 small case. We only had 4 passengers, 1 large case 3 small cases. 2 case had to go on the back seat as only one large and 1 small would fit in the boot. If we had arrived with 5 passengers, 2 large cases and 2 small cases, the advertised capacity, we simply would not of fitted in. You are falsely advertising and miss selling. The sat nat was provided without the bracket to mount it so the passenger had to hold it. "

" Good service from Auto Europe. Vehicle supplied by Avis was lower spec than expected (Fiat 500, not VW Polo or similar); although it performed OK, we expected better for the money. I got the impression that Avis were not bothered to give good service because the reservation was not made with them directly. "
" 1. Inconvenient opening hours - closed from 13.00 to 15.30 for lunch (our train arrived at Chiusi at 13.45)! 2. Vehicle (Fiat 500 automatic) was missing rear screen wiper blade, which we realised after 3 days when it rained! When phoned, Avis did not offer to fix but told us they'd reimburse us if we went and bought one. (We did not bother - luckily rest of holiday there was no rain) 3. Car poorly valeted eg lots of dust in rear door seal. Too little water in windscreen wash tank - I had to fill it up after 2-3 days. 4. At pick up, member of Avis staff did not come and check for pre-existing damage - he had to be asked to come out and mark-up a bodywork dent. There was a burn-hole in the driver's seat that neither Avis nor we noted at pick up. "
