" Although I presented my voucher, my passport and driving licence and credit card the agent managed to open up and print the contract for someone else. This was torn up and we started the process again. On the second attempt the contract had all my details correct except it was still in the wrong name. This contract was torn up and we started again. So it took three times as long as it should to get the keys to the car. Outside an agent inspected the car with us for damage and marked four areas of damage on the form for us to sign. We asked for her to point out the damage she had noted but she said she didn't have time and said that 'was not how we work'. I said I wasn't happy and she was abusive and threw the paperwork down on the bonnet and stormed off. Another agent came down and went over the damage report with us and it took all of 2 minutes. "
" At Ponta Delgada you don't rent through AVIS but Ilha Verde and so you don't get the normal AVIS service. Ilha Verde operate as an agent for AVIS and this should be made clear by Auto Europe. It took the counter staff three attempts to get my contract correct for signature leading to a long delay. "

On arrival at the AVIS desk I was informed that this vehicle was not available, the only available hybrid being a Toyota Corolla. I was told that there were no similar SUVs available but that I could purchase an upgrade. I do not consider that a Toyota Corolla is a suitable replacement for a Toyota CHR SUV. The cabin space is much smaller, and we could only manage to fit 3 suitcases into the boot by dropping one of the rear seats forward! It's a good job that there were only 3 people in our party. Having paid over £800 for this rental, the whole AVIS rental experience left me feeling cheated! "

Had to wait 30 mins to speak with someone but he was very helpful and sent me an apology email stating the money had been refunded. " As I wrote above, I use your company to try to avoid the rip off companies, the wild west attitude of fleecing the unsuspecting customer. In this case, I had to swerve the outrageous charge levied. Many clients must fall for their robbery. This is an area which EU legislation is needed to curb the actions of these companies - as far as I am concerned it is a simple transaction, rent a car, return it clean, full of fuel no charges. As a renter, you return home with the risk of charges for anything with little chance of appeal, they just take the monies. "
" Auto Europe voucher clearly stated an Avis charge in Portugal of €2.10 per day for the motorway toll transponder, tolls would be charged. The counter clerk printed a sheet and insisted on payment of €30 for the four day rental. I showed her your paperwork, her English was very good, she was very clear I had to pay this sum. I declined in principle, she removed the charge. I therefore had to spend the few days carefully avoiding the toll motorways in the Algarve. I did call your team on Monday 18th, this complaint was noted. The car reserved was shown as a small SUV, a Peugeot. I was interested to try this type on vehicle. The surly Avis employee made no attempt to help with this choice, she allocated a small Seat and said this was the same class of car. I do understand there could be a barrier of language but this was an unhelpful negative employee, trying to extract more money from a client. I chose your service as I believe insurance etc is covered, try to avoid the seemingly dishonest practices of the southern EU car hire firms. "

The booked vehicle was 'unavailable' so we were given a very battered and beaten up Fiat Panda with many dents and marks. Upon returning the car, the receiving agent tried to claim some of the pre-existing dents were caused by us - but luckily we had carefully logged all the damage on pickup and pointed it all out to the pickup clerk. " All the car hire companies at Lisbon ariport are apalling - the airport is too busy for the facilties provided. I tried Avis for the first time hoping that they might be a bit better. I waited almost 2 hours before being on the road. 55 minutes was waiting at the desk and then another 40 minutes waiting for the car in the car park. I was initially given the wrong car in the car park and almost drove away before the agent finally agreed with me it was not the right car. When the right car came it was still wet and was parked between two other cars in a dark car park. I did the inspection with an agent and agreed with the pre-known marks. On my return the agent discovered damage to the wheel trim and tyre which I believe was not caused by me - but I had not been in a position to see during the pick up inspection. I had taken full excess, but was then told by Avis that I had to pay them and claim back from Authoeurope - which I dont think is clear when making the booking. I use Autoeurope a lot, and this was one of the worst experiences I have had. "

" We have used Auto.Europe for the last 5 years and have found their service to be very reliable, with a wide choice of agents and vehicles. My perennial complaints are that the pick up is ALWAYS very slow at which ever third party we use. Additionally, the insurance is too opaque and complicated. We pay insurance when we book and then are offered insurance at the time of pick up, which you feel you should take to be on the safe side. I would prefer to know all the costs upfront and decide which I want at that point, not when you pick up the vehicle. "

Only a short wait to get sorted and I was upgraded to a Peugeot SUV 2008 when I had reserved a Toyota Auris! Very happy withe car and all went well with the rental. On return, the keys were just taken from me and I said: "Is that it?" to which the reply was "Yes". I waited from Thursday to Sunday for the "block" on my account to be removed and for the adjusted account to be emailed to me.which I wasn't happy with as usually the hire car is checked on return and a verbal assurance that all is ok is made and the block removed. On querying this, it appears it is actually a roadside assistance package which I did not need. Not happy at all as what was the cheapest company to hire through became the most expensive. "

" it was the worst experience Ive had in years. when I arrived I presented the voucher at the check in desk. The person behind the desk told me that I only had basic insurance which required being upgraded. I told her that I had an Excess guarantee up to £3000. she said regardless of what I thought I wasn't covered. By now I was getting very nervous as insurance is something I take very seriously. I again asked her was she 100% sure I wasn't covered she said yes I wasn't covered ie it would cost me 95 euros for the 4 days. not happy paying it but there was absoulutly no way that I was going to drive on strange roads without fully comprehensive insurance. when I returned the car I again asked the question about insurance telling the man behind the desk that I felt they were wrong as I booked the car in the UK with excess cover included as part of the deal. He again said I was wrong and should take it up with Auto Europe. to be honest I feel that I was continually told lies but I was so nervous about driving without insurance I felt I had no option but to take it and pay the 95 euros "

When I asked about a motorway toll tag the agent told me that it would cost 40+ euro. When I challenged him with the information provided on my voucher that the maximum charge was 21 euro and the daily charge just over 2 euro, he backed down and said that he was offering a different service. This was the second year that I have used Avis at Porto airport and each time the agent has hassled me to upgrade and pay for unnecessary services. "

" Very good booking service with Auto Europe though the website needs improvement. There is a USA / UK and EU website all giving different options for the different waivers. If you are on a USA website - then you get complete cover (zero excess) but on the UK website - you only get refundable excess and the EU website also had something different. I think those need to be standard across all the websites together with the pricing. Unable to get the exact vehicle model / spec of my choice as i had to go with the class of vehicle. Despite this i got lucky and managed to get the S400 which is what i wanted in the first place. However this can be improved at the booking stage to give the customer an exact choice of the vehicle that he requires. "

" Collection felt rushed and the toll tag situation wasn't explained sufficiently well for someone with no knowledge of Portuguese roads meaning we had to spend hours trying to avoid the motorway to avoid fines. The car was filthy and obviously hadn't been cleaned since the last rental so we were given another car. No real apology just another bunch of keys and told to get on with it. The whole process was too rushed from start to finish and no rental agreement was received for the new vehicle. "
