" I was arriving at Southampton from a cruise ship and did not know what time I was going to arrive at the Avis rental desk.- I scheduled a pick-up at noon, which is my standard practice with other car rental services with the intent of picking the car up sooner if I arrived sooner. I arrived at 9am and the car was ready for me but I was unable to take the car until noon because of the rigid "systems" in place at Auto Europe. Avis was willing to give me the car sooner, but Auto Europe was unable/willing to release the car sooner. In addition, Auto Europe was unable to change my drop off location towards the end of my rental, again due to rigid "Systems". Next time, I will use another 3rd party or reserve directly with Avis. "

" We rented car in Edinburgh airport and were on our way to Invergarry when the car had a flat tire in the middle of Scottish Highlands . There was absolutely no recovery and we were left in the middle of nowhere and the customer care just told everytime that help will come in 2 hours - which never happened . Timeline of incident : 18.08.2024 - 07:15 pm - Flat tire on A86 - near Kinloch Laggan - Scottish Highlands 11.30 pm - first help came . Told cannot fix it and left. 11.45 pm - Customer care told rescue will come at 1.30 am 02.00 a m - Nobody came . We found a person who will drive for 1 hour and take us to Inverness 09:00 am - Recovery truck came Avis had failed to provide even basic recovery and this had led to trauma and sufferings for us. Because of failure to rescue us , I had to book emergency taxi services ( 258£) and emergency accommodation (329 £) in middle of night at 2 am . I feel so stupid for believing that Avis and Auto europe will somehow rescue us . Avis almost left us to die without even rescuing us . Even after 7 hours , Avis could not rescue us . The incident caused us enough trauma and near death experience for the kids and they were crying for hours till 2 am. The car that was provided was not serviced and maintained properly which led to this incident . "

" I have always had good experiences with Auto Europe (and have referred many fiends). Not this time. When I arrived at the counter with my voucher, they told me the booking had been cancelled! They told me to get out of line and call AutoEurope. I did, and it was a Saturday morning at 7 am and AutoEurope was closed. I found the Avis confirm number on my voucher (which was reconfirmed by Auto Europe 48 hours or so before via emai) and went to their app. I could see the booking and the fact it was cancelled. A new booking was about 5x what mine was. I got back into the (long) line. While I was in that line and Avis person came around looking for people with preferred status. When he got to me, I explained I had Avis preferred -- in fact their top status Chairman. But I had booked through Auto Europe and it did not reflect on my reservation. He took me to another booth and found the issue (which was not fully explained to me... so I am not sure where the fault lies) and gave me my car. In the end my voucher was honored, but only because they were willing to help a good customer. The counter staff initially had the 'not our problem' attitude. I doubt I would have had such a positive outcome had I not been a good customer to Avis. "

When I spoke to Avis they said the insurance could be difficult to claim back from Auto Europe if I had an accident even if I was not at fault, so I paid an additional £8 per day to reduce the excess from £1500 to £500. Therefore I expected the total to be £113.65. You can understand my surprise when the bill I received was £177.64. I was upset at the total lack of communication or information explaining that the total rental is not £89.65 at all and there would be numerous additional charges! I will certainly not be using Auto Europe again and will warn others that going through a third party incurs hidden costs. If Avis is at fault and that this is incorrect then I apologise if that is the case. "

On the side of the motorway googling for a car manual and then filling up air in the wind and rain is NOT what I expect when I've hired a car to be in perfect roadworthy condition. When I reached the destination I then had to take time reading through the manual to find out how to reset the warning light. Engine lost power and AA roadside assist towed car away (AA very good) AVIS and Auto Europe not available, nobody answered phone, AA man very flustrated with lack of availability of AVIS people. I had to call a personal contact to pick me up from breakdown position. Next day still nobody at AVIS answering phone so I took a train back to Birmingham airport to report situation in person to AVIS. Manager of AVIS pick up site very good, he had not yet received any report of breakdown but quickly confirmed situation and cancelled old rental and issued new contract and car. Because car was rented via third party (Auto Europe) Manager was unable to credit me back for loss and breakdown but informed me he would request credit from Auto Europe....not yet received "

" This relates to any of the car hire companies as they all in use an off-site location and my comments actually relate to Bristol Airport, which I really detest. It wasn't obvious where to wait for the bus to take you to the car rental office. On the return, I had to allow an extra 30 mins to an already early start to phone for the bus as the normal bus service did not start until 6am. Having car rental service at the actual terminal would be so much better. "

I had only used 580 miles of the allotted 2,100 so the charge wasn't for excess millage. The car was best described as tired but I guess that is understandable with the lack of new cars and the mileage the rental cars do. "

I was told by your agent that as I hadn't paid for cancellation insurance there was nothing you could do. I wasn't trying to cancel my booking nor had I changed my flight plans, the airline had. I was unable to unscrew the petrol cap and so was unable to fill up on return. I was then charged £153 for petrol when I had only driven 221 miles which proved that the petrol tank was NOT full as I had been advised. I pointed out these problems to the agent on return and said that I was willing to pay a fair price for the petrol used which I calculated was 25 litres max which should have cost no more than £40. " Even though I had hired with Avis Internationally and had produced documentation about my address on that occasion the system failed to recognise it. It also challenged my address where I have lived since 2004, was registered on the electoral roll and where my online Experian account said I currently lived. Auto Europe had failed to remind me that I MAY need more than my passport and driving licence so I had emptied my bag of identifying papers in anticipation of the trip. The representative was unwilling to use my secure Experian account as proof of address. More time was lost as the male representative told me to wait aside so he could serve other customers, without fully explaining the situation so I could start to rectify it. He obvious has need of some customer service training and focus on conflict resolution skills: Avoidance and blank expressions are just annoying. I tried to cancel the booking, as I thought I had lost too much time and had not enjoy the Avis interaction, but had Auto Europe presented as some difficult 3rd party to deal with who may obstruct the cancelation. I resolved to continue with booking. So I had to return home to get the materials, losing about 3 hours of my rental. When I returned a few hours later, his female colleague treated me with such diffidence it verged on rudeness. I was angered by this as much the initial situation, but whilst annoyed I wanted to get the car - and get out of there asap - so I did not react. I can understand the reaction of the original representative as there are conditions to be fulfilled (even if systems did not work to the optimum) but not this, she made me feel very uncomfortable. Such a pity as the car was as good as expected. "

Early on the central locking failed and the mirrors were stuck in one position. Finally when dropping off the car the area was full of litter and look uncared for (picture available). "

" We had requested a car seat in advance. Given it's a car hire company you'd think the car seats were going to be ok. First off we were presented with 2 that were too small for our child and then when we got the right car seat it was old and tired and not iso base fixed. I would have expected that a car seat, suitable to the age of the child, in a reasonable condition, would have been pre fitted in to the car and using iso base fixes. We wasted a lot of time sorting this out and I didn't feel particularly comfortable on long journeys with our child in it. Poor service. "

" Hired the car from 23/7/19 to 1/8/19, when i handed the car back, they checked the car & found new damage (some slight scraping of the rear alloy wheel), i was totally unaware of this, until it was pointed out on return. Anyway the Avis staff said they would check the approximate repair cost & told me it would be £101, which i thought was a bit steep, but i agreed to pay & signed electronically on a handheld gadget to sanction the payment. On the 28/8/19, i received an email from Avis along with a pdf of a receipt for £35, they haven't taken any further payments, so that's canny. I claimed this £35 back from the Auto Europe full insurance i took out, it took a bit of doing, but they did pay up eventually, though they're not the best for communication, i would recommend customers of Auto Europe take out their full protection, which is a fraction of the cost of the actual car hire company's full insurance. "

What the telephone assistance told me was completely different fro what the branch managers told me would happen. Also a delay on being served at Heathrow another 30 minutes. The replacement vehicle (not even an upgrade) was acceptable and did not give any problems. " I have a uk drivers licence and reside in spain. I called Auto Europe after i booked to check what documentation I would need at the counter of avis. The representative was lacking in knowledge and said that it was possible that i would not be able to hire the car as i did not reside in the uk but had a uk licence. I panicked and asked if i could have a refund. she refused as i booked the day before i was due to collect the car. She said that i should call AU once at the desk of avis and they would try to help me if avis refused to honour the contract. I then called avis and explianed my position. They said that as long as i can bring along proof of my spanish address and two recent untility bills or similar there would be no problem and that the drivers licence whether it be spanish or uk is irrelevant. sure enaugh all went well. " I have an on going issue with Avis. I collected the car at 13.27 on July 6th from Manchester Airport. On the 30 minute drive to my brother's house in Charlesworth, Derbyshire, I noticed that the tyre pressure warning indicator was on. Upon arrival I immediately called the Avis contact number at the airport. I was told that there was no one there that could help, as it was Saturday afternoon, and I would need to drive the car back to the airport on Monday. I was advised it would be easier to check how to reset the warning message using the internet. I managed to do this. When I checked the tyre pressures, three tyres were between 33 and 36 psi and one was 45 psi. On closer inspection the high pressure tyre was a new one with a white line around it. Clearly there had been a problem with this wheel, the tyre was changed and overinflated (presumably as a test). I was able to reset all the tyre pressures to the recommended 35psi. My first issue is that Avis sent me off in an unfamiliar car with the tyres seriously wrong in terms of their pressure. This should have been checked and corrected. I returned the car at 9.16 on 31st July, also to Manchester Airport. I was told that there was a small nick in one of the tyres and that I would need to pay 151 pounds for a new tyre. I am sure that at no time during my hire period did I hit a kerb or anything else with the tyre, to cause that damage. I really believe that the problem pre-existed and was probably the reason for my problems on day 1. Whilst I inspected the car body before driving away, I did not think to check the tyres. No one from Avis accompanied me to pick up the car from the parking bay. I therefore disputed the liability and I am still waiting to hear further from Avis. If I cannot convince Avis to drop this charge I will need to make a claim under the excess guarantee, which I took out with autoeurope. I have set all scores to 1 pending the resolution of this issue. "

When I went to collect the car from the cabin the booth was locked and no staff around for 11 minutes as they had just nipped to the shops. Enterprise were a bit better that Avis the last time I collected a car from Liverpool airport so will probably go back to them next time. The car had not been cleaned on the inside there were crisp packets and half empty bottles in the rear foot wells. "

They have taken out of my account the following: 07/12/2018 AVIS RENT-A-CAR -£305.91 26/11/2018 AVIS RENT-A-CAR -£12.79 The only charge should be 2 x 18 GBP = 36 GBP for the additional 2 days. I tried to resolve with Avis, they acknowledged the situation, said they will look into it (yesterday) and still took the money out of my account (today). They have also take 12.79 GBP on the 26th, without informing me of the charge of what it is for. Please resolve this ASAP. I have reported the fraud to my bank (Barclays) and will speak to my solicitior tomorrow regarding taking legal action. "

I had no choice but to drive on having checked all the tyres (by sight) first. On returning the car I brought this up and was told that no cars had either manual or pump, in my view these are essential equipment for safe driving, on the continent these are required by law. Correctly inflated tyres are a basic safety requirement. I will make sure that I have my own compressor with me in future. "

" Nothing wrong with booking process. Information about Car Hire being at the airport was misleading. Shuttle bus was still required. It is not fair against companies who advertise as being off the airport. Major car hire companies are also outside the airport, because they use Manchester Airport shuttle bus it does not make them technically at the airport. "
" I have hired a 7 seater to pick up my family which arrived from Amsterdam for the weekend. Unfortunately our plans for Saturday in Peak district failed as we have waited hours to get our 7 seater. Car should be ready for 12 but we departed AVIS at around 15:30 after we had something to eat, it was too late to go for our trip (main reason why I hired this car) . We were there with small children, aged 1 , 3,7, 12 everyone were hungry after the flight, we could not get anything from vending machine as we did not have change etc... I was promised to get a free tank of fuel for the waiting ( not worth really for a lost day, and partially weekend,especially when you pay lot off money for your flight for the weekend). This perk turned out to be pointless because we could not really use it as it was too late to go for Saturday journey. When car arrived, fuel was not there and they had take it away again to refill it. When we started to pack in we realised 7th seat was broken, and came from the garage not prepared and collapsed. Luckily my cousin managed to repair this as he is mechanically savy, he had to stick his fingers into springs and seat locking mechanism, so we were lucky and that he could get us going. Who knows how much longer we would have to wait if he would not do it. On monday when I returned the car, car was checked and receipt was handed over to me, later I have checked that they still put refuelling charge on my final receipts. Here we go again, I had to make phone calls to get my money back. I can say that staff tried to be nice, but AVIS certainly this time did not contribute for our weekend to be nice. "

Flight from Australia was delayed by 24 hrs, when I rang Auto Europe to advise them of the delay and request them to inform Avis I was told that because I hadn't given 48 hrs notice I would be charged a 100 pound cancellation fee and rebooked with a smaller car at an additional 300 pounds over and above what I had already prepaid. I rang Avis directly who were unable to change the booking due to it being booked through Auto Europe, but they held the original car securely for me until our arrival at Heathrow 24 hrs later. Gold star to Avis. Wooden spoon to Auto Europe who I definitely will not be using in the future. "

" I chose Auto-Europe/Avis because I wanted the Pickup full and return full option. In the terms and conditions, under fuel policy it says: "Refueling Charge: Vehicles are rented with a full tank of fuel and must be returned with a full tank of fuel. If not a locally determined refueling fee will apply." The car hire voucher says: "Fuel: The rental will be provided with a full tank of fuel, for which clients will be charged. Client is advised to return the vehicle as empty as possible as there is no refund for unused fuel." In actual fact, I was charged for a 1/4 tank and was told to return the vehicle as empty as possible. This is unacceptable, as far as I'm concerned. "

" The insurance thing is always a little problematic. The plan I bought from you apparently did not cover everything and I opted to purchase zero deductable from Avis @ £15/day. Not sure I needed to, but I did. Better safe than sorry, but why should this always be so confusing? On my previous rentals I did get zero deductible from AutoEurope. "

" Overall good. Fuel was marked as full, but only 3/4 of a tank. I spotted this and the staff at luton modified the paperwork. If I had not noticed I would have had to return the vehicle full. "

" I suggest all cars carry a handbook.The car I hired did not have one .For safety reasons I consider it essential and only common sense to provide one .It would help to ensure that the driver was aware of all the controls and any extra advice ,that may be helpful whilst travelling in an unfamiliar vehicle I was departing from the Edinburgh carpark in the dark at 10.30 pm. .I was therefore a little apprehensive; without the ability to familiarise myself with the controls with the aid of the manual . I consider the lack of this essential book contributed to a rather less than enjoyable drive through fairly rural countryside into Fife . I would ,therefore reccomend that this be considered seriously. "

MY journey began at 10.30 pm in the dark in Edinburgh car park . A hand book would have been most useful and reassuring that the vehicle was being correctly used and managed . Deposit box for car key was sealed up, therefore impossible to deposit key without considerable inconvenience and returning to Departures to Information Desk. Otherwise car excellent and staff very helpful and professional. "
