It took another 30 minutes to be given the right car and actually exit the car park. Even the staff admitted that they were totally overwhelmed. The fuel tank was only 3/4 full. Stupidly I forgot to check in the general craziness. before handing the car back I refuelled to a full tank (at the airport). Now looking at the final bill Thrifty have charged for a fuel top up. So the summary is - incompetent, timewasting and deceitful. A truly dreadful experience. "

We had planned to spend the day in Sandwich and Plymouth to visit the rock etc, so didn't do this as just wanted to get the car back. As I stated before, I thought I bought premium coverage with Auto Europe Car Rent, but this time, the Dollars counter staff told me that I didn't buy it, just regular coverage. " We weren't initially offered the car we booked (convertible mustang) once at the collection parking lot. We were offered a non-convertible mustang or a 2 seater convertible MG. The MG was much smaller so no way our cases would fit plus it was not on par value wise. The non-convertible was a lovely car but not as expected. We were offered to choose a different vehicle type, ie a Jeep or similar but this was far apart from what we reserved. We travelled without an actual credit card which we accept was our error and understood that it was going to mean picking up our rental car was unlikely. We knew the problem was unlikely to be resolved but his manner was very unpleasant and unhelpful. After 10 minutes, gave up and made do. A few days into the hire, became concerned about the inclusive toll package and if we needed to do anything to make sure it was working, so contacted Dollar with questions. Their response was nonsense and when I replied for clarification I heard nothing more from them. Turns out the toll issue was fine, but I had two weeks of stress worrying we were racking up massive charges. " Where do I begin Pre booked the car,as I've done many times before, making sure the vehicle will be big enough for our luggage, that additional insurance is already paid for and additional driver is in place and covered. Upon arriving at the car rental desks at Logan Airport, We found that the Dollar counter was closed and were redirected to the Thrifty desk. We were dismayed to find that there was an enormous queue and 2.5 hours later we were served- there were only 2 assistants working. As we were being served it became clear that the order we had made in the Uk was not what we were getting for our money. 1.no additional driver 2. Extra insurance to cover further eventualities- that we refused having already opted for the premium package. We then arrived at the car lot where we would usually be able to choose a vehicle from the group that we had indicated upon booking. We were not given this option and had to take the car offered-it was a Dodge Equinox which is a small SUV crossover- not the Jeep Grand Cherokee that we ordered.We understand that we may not get the car ordered however the Equinox is not even similar.As the day had already been so long and the stress of the situation already compounded by a lost suitcase and the horrendous car hire queue we didn't feel up to dealing with a confrontation at that point however we were very unhappy and should never have been put into that position by Dollar. "

" In the main the process was fine and the car was no problem at all. I 'hired' a sat nav and to be honest the 16 day hire charge was greater than purchasing the identical unit in the UK. The unit hadnt been refreshed for some long while ad it wad giving outdated junction numbers which I'm told where changed over a year ago. " This was in a number of ways a disappointing experience, on the plus side the car supplied was ideal in terms of size and economy but had done almost 25k miles and had clearly been well used and appeared to have been poorly maintained, the cruise control was inoperative, and the engine management computer intermittently indicating that the grill shutter was not working and that the tires may have been under inflated. These warning messages were disconcerting. "

" The charging of your Pass for Tolls appears to be simply a form of extra charges. We where told it was the best way to get out of Boston and where under the impression we would only be charged for the tolls used. Not the case. Alternative give was to be charged excessive tolls charges and administration costs for each toll we went through. "

" The most important feature on a rental car is a SATNAV (also known as Nav or navigation or GPS). It seems impossible to specify this with any rental company (not just Dollar), but luckily the car we hired came with an in-built SATNAV which was excellent. We had brought a WAZE system on our phone and various maps, but the fitted SATNAV was all we needed. We would more likely book with Dollar if we could be assured that a SATNAV would be fitted. "

" Had purchased the Gold package (3 additional drivers plus fuel full to empty). Wanted to ensure wife was named as an additional driver on the rental paperwork. Had problen doing this. R At main counter, was told that in MA, partner living at same address was automatically covered on rental & no need to physically name them on paperwork, nor had they the facility to put them in the ' Named Additional driver' part of the ... told to get wife added by staff at the exit at the gate. Then at exit, the agent said they couldn't add as not needed. They said they would email to confirm wife was covered ... no email was ever recieved. Whilst MA law may cover spouse on a rental, the rental contract clearly says, only main driver is covered plus any named drivers on the list, which wife was not named. On a previous rental, when stopped for a routine police check, they said wife / spouse has to be named on the rental paperwork if want to drive the rental vechile. Fortunately the main driver was driving at the time so no issue but since that time, we ALWAYS want wife named on paperwork,. Seems right, especially as paid for the Gold package. Alamo rentals in Florida, do add & name a wife / spouse on the rental paperwork. So experience at Boston was not good & seems both desk & agent at exit didn't want to allow us (or accommodate our request) to add wife on paperwork, leaving us very uneasy as to whether wife was legally covered to drive the vechile. Email from Alamo to confirm was never recieved. "

" My experience with SIXT was awful. We arrived very tired to be told they didn't have the car we had booked and paid for but they had a higher spec model that had a built in sat nav so they would deduct the cost of the sat nav from the bill , although the higher spec car was more expensive., They then went on to act like a double glazing salesperson, saying we could have discount for travelling by British airways, discount for being a married couple etc, etc. I was so confused by the end of the discussion I didn't know what I had saved or what i had paid. Now I have come back and checked my online banking I have currently paid an extra £500 plus on the top of what I had already paid and there is no sign of the 200 dollar refund if we handed the car back in pristine condition with a full tank of petrol. I HAVE TRIED TO GET THROUGH TO SIXT WITH NO SUCCESS AS YET. "

I was traveling a long distance over this trip so felt I had no option. Car upgraded to Ford Edge. GPS not working properly and instructions unavailable. " The collection process was awful. Signage was not clear, and when we eventually found our way to the desks, the agent was not pleasant at all. She aggressively tried to up-sell - to the point where she was practically lying to us. She said the car we'd booked (a Nissan Rogue!) wouldn't fit more than two bags, and is too small because we were "too tall". She said that sat nav we had booked would lose signal all the time, so if we didn't want to get lost we had to purchase a built-in one. We said no, she made up some ridiculous discount by asking which airline we flew with, we said no again and proceeded with what we had booked. When we didn't pay more money, she was very rude and the worst part was that it looked like she was training someone else! There is a way to up-sell a product, this was not professional or acceptable. She lied to make us believe we'd been wrong in choosing our package and to say that we would not fit into the large vehicle we'd requested was not only incorrect, but also deeply insulting. No surprise, when we collected the vehicle we had rented, the sat nav worked fine and there was plenty of space for us and our bags. Very unsatisfied with the collection procedure and it's really put me off using Alamo again. "

" Hired for two months from Logan, Boston, USA. Car had previously been hired to 'SMOKERS' (UGH) - please have smoking and non-smoking vehicles. No information about how to activate transponder so spent 2 months using EZPASS lanes without it unknowingly. Thankfully discovered that Alamo cover this eventuality - but it caused a lot of unnecessary stress when we realised our error as the fine per violation is $57!! Please show customers how to activate/deactivate the transponder as required or at least tell customers if the transponder needs to be activated as some do and some don't. Systems are changing constantly without proper notification. "

We arranged to return the car at Burlington VT airport but we had to then leave the desk to go and refuel to avoid a charge for gas. Advised that there would be a partial refund (USD 75) after we returned the replacement car but it has not been received yet. Staff did their best to help but I felt they had little discretion to do so. Otherwise, standard of service was at the high level I expect as a regular (so far) customer of Avis. "

He told us (very clearly) that, based on the journey we would be taking, we would need to pay an extra £130 for the e-z pass. He told us that none of the toll booths accepted cash and each time we went through we'd be charged the toll and an admin fee of $10. He said we'd go through at least 8 toll booths and the tolls were about $10 each. So we paid for this. What actually happened was that we went through 5 tolls. 3 of which we could have paid cash and the fees were $2, $3 and $1 (I have the exact locations if you need). So we essentially wasted over £100 on the pass which we were told "we really had to have so we don't get charged $150 or more". We mentioned this when we dropped the car off at Boston airport (the guy here was brilliant). He did process a refund but I'd like to get full refund as this is totally unacceptable. " The car had damage to the underside covering, I had to take tools from hotel owner to remover the cover. This explained the noise form the car and the gravel that was falling as I drove. Also, I was charged $44 for full tank, I pumped in $15 and had over half a tank! They did say they would take off fuel charge when I returned car, I am yet to check that actually happened. "

" Happy with car (Hyundai Sonata) - great big boot for 2 large and 2 small cases. Car appeared to have been internally valeted but not particularly clean on outside and the interior stank of cigars. Quite unpleasant as we are non smokers. We also had the car for over 2 weeks (touring holiday) and the smell didnt dissipate until near the end of the holiday. Otherwise it was comfortable to drive and we had no other complaints. We would consider using this company again as their prices were very competitive. "

The auto tail gate feature on the Ford was dangerous as I and my wife did not appreciate that it closed automatically when "kicking" under the rear of the car. As a result it struck us on the head on numbers of occasions when we were loading/unloading or getting changed under the raised tailgate. It also came very close to crushing some of our fragile possessions. All customers should be provided with a clear warning of this problem when they collect car - I guess there would be some liability for any injury/damage without such a warning. "

" There was a long queue and it was nearly 90 mins before we got our car. We had a puncture a few miles from the airport. After the tyre was changed we had to return to the airport to swap the car as it was only a temporary tyre. The second car we were given had around 40k on the clock, the interior of the car was in a poor condition with the springs making indentations through the seat, causing discomfort. The tyres on the car were so shallow, the car was low to the ground and the slightest dip in the road was felt. The back and side vision was obscured by the shape of the windows and it only had 3 doors!! You are probably wondering why we did not ask to have a different car. However by the time we got back to the airport and picked up the replacement car we were exhausted. It was raining heavily and we still had to get to our accommodation. We were unaware of these issues at that time. We landed at 6.30pm we arrived at our destination a few miles away at midnight. Not a good start to the holiday. As our holiday progressed the poor visibility, uncomfortable seats and the issues with the car being low took away some of the enjoyment. "

" The initial hire process was a little 'bumpy' because there was an issue relating to the fact that you had taken the booking and yet then chose to inform me on the morning of travel that my reservation had been "suspended" and that I was required to go through a number of security checks despite having hired from you before. These security checks would have involved me sending you a copy of my passport and credit cards in an email, something that I am loathed to do even for government authorities. However, following an email from myself the matter was quickly resolved, Auto Europe displaying the high level of customer service that I had expected. I have used your services several times as indeed have many of my friends and you are regarded as being amongst the best, if not the best, for overseas car hire. Collecting the vehicle from Alamo in Boston was painless and the level of customer service excellent, as indeed it has been when I have hired through Alamo or been with friends who have hired through Alamo. Sadly though that level of customer service was severely lacking when it came to issues that were experienced during the hire. The rear luggage compartment cover was missing which presented a security issue; I emailed about this but failed to receive a reply. I then had to return to the UK briefly and asked whether my Father could be put on the policy or whether I could return the cart Alamo and park it there - I was not asking or a refund - and pick it up again upon my return to Boston to save any messing around; I did not receive a reply. I will not bore you with the email chain that ensued suffice to say that when I returned the vehicle Alamo were extremely apologetic and admitted liability, indeed both the 'return check out' lady and the supervisor were dismayed and embarrassed by the appalling lack of customer service. However, what makes the matter all the more infuriating is that, because Alamo had failed dismally to deal with the matter and because the email that I finally received also failed to deal with the matter, I emailed their CEO Pamela Nicholson and, guess what, she failed to reply. I emailed again and yet again received no reply. Given the absolutely pathetic level of service it would appear that Ms Nicholson has her cranium well and truly inserted in her anal cavity and cares not about customer service but more about her pay check which she receives for, what would appear to be, doing little or nothing. I have just sent an email to Mr. Nestor and am awaiting a reply, I will not be holding my breath though. "

After a long flight from the UK with 2 young fractious kids I was fairly aggressively and misleadingly upsold to a larger car with no clear indication of the increased cost. Right at the end I found out Alamo were trying to charge me about 400% more than the agreed price, from about £210 to about £750. After complaining I managed to get this reduced to about £660 but still left a bad taste in the mouth. I'm sure if I'd been on my own I would have insisted on the original deal, but didn't feel it was possible at the time. Was also annoyed that a transponder for tolls (which should have totalled $2 for the usage) was added for $20, at no point was I told the price was a flat upfront fee. I was expecting to pay whatever usage was flagged by the tolls scanning the transponder. "

" Unfortunately, Alamo Boston Logan Airport did not have many vehicles in the class that we had booked, (Intermediate SUV), and the one that we took suffered transmission problems halfway to our destination in Maine. The vehicle had 32500 miles on the clock, although the service receipt only showed 2500 miles (an error by the Alamo vehicle prep. employee). The failing transmission meant that we had to drive to Portland to exchange the vehicle which involved a round trip of +90 miles. Portland Alamo staff were very helpful and gave us a 2 month old vehicle which was much more to the standard that we have had from Alamo in previous rentals. I am very surprised that Alamo are utilising vehicles with +32500 miles for rental purposes. "
