" For our honeymoon, we booked 10 days in Vancouver and 6 days in Calgary. In Vancouver, we booked a budget vehicle that turned out to be a Toyota Camry Hybrid. In Calgary, we wanted to treat ourselves to something a bit special, so we paid double the price of our 10 day budget option for what we expected to be a muscle car. Only to be offered what we had just had, but for double the price. Unacceptable. "
" Avis told me the car they were giving us was a Toyotay Camry Hybrid, when we booked a Dodge Charger 'or similar'. A Camry is in no way similar to a Charger. One is a hybrid, family friendly sedan, the other is a muscle car. It is delusional and false advertising to put these cars in the same bracket, especially when it was advertised on your page as Dodge Charger. The Avis manager eventually offered us a Ford Bronco, which was OK but really disappointing not to get the muscle car experience we hoped for. "

" We have visited Canada a number of times to ski, hiring a car and travelling between ski areas. We have always looked for deals with Winter Tyres included rather than the minimum requirement in much of Canada of M&S level. Winter tyres are more than M&S. In all instances of hire to date the promised Winter Tyres booked have been supplied. In the UK, we purchased carhire for Canada with Auto Europe in July 2024 for a 35 day rental). Previous experience with Auto Europe has been good but sadly not this time. In July 2024 we opted for the product advertised by Auto Europe specifically as there was an offer banner claiming that Winter Tires were included. We checked that this was on the voucher when we booked. This level of tyres were important to us for safety reasons. . Our voucher clearly states 'Your rental includes: .........Winter Tire Fee for rentals commencing Dec.15th – Mar 15th.' {note different dates than the M&S minimum required for much of Canada until 30 April}. At Calgary airport we pointed out that we had paid for Winter Tyres as per our voucher and there was no denial of what the voucher said but instead it was said 'it's all Auto Europe fault' ....'we never provide Winter Tyres on a prepaid'. . . What has amazed us is that any complaint to either Auto Europe or Dollar for over half our trip got the response that we should complain once the rental was over. We didn't want to complain we wanted winter tyres on the car. We tried to reason with Auto Europe several times to no avail and we received many unhelpful messages from them.. We wasted an age trying to get action so we could get a car with Winter Tyres to allow us to do our planned trip. To us this seems absurd as we have a car for 35 days that is not of the safety level booked relevant to the local road conditions, yet no action was taken. We expected action. over half way through our trip Auto Europe suddenly sent a message saying it was their mistake. . We are still awaiting recompense that addresses the error sufficiently. This seems a case of unfair trading practices,. We are very surprised that there is no intention to address this during our 5 week rental leaving us with a vehicle that is not as contractually agreed. our rental has turned out with the failure to supply the very feature advertised that persuaded us to purchase the particular car rental product. "
" When we arrived at Calgary airport the Dollar service desk seemed to have missed out on the service element. There was an issue with winter tyres as below but there was no effort to sort this. It was Auto Europe error but we did not know this until more than half way through our rental. I would have expected Dollar to try and help sort out the problem. There was no getting further in discussion no matter how we tried and we then heard the service desk worker beside us tell another customer that they had no cars with Winter tyres available It does seem that the Calgary Airport Dollar office had very limited cars available. We were given a car that has chips in its windscreen and after only a few Miles showed an oil warning light – there was little oil so it seems it was not checked (and we suspect needed a service). We added oil but expected the cost to be reimbursed - it has not been even though requested. We did try to ring the Calgary airport office to report the oil light but to no avail so we bought the oil. We asked at Calgary airport what we should do if the chips in the windscreen turned to cracks and did not get the courtesy of a reply. As there was a long queue waiting we had no option but to proceed with the car we now have. It seems that the car given to us had not been prepared for a 35 day hire. "

" Pick up of the vehicle from Calgary Airport was very poor, long queues and only one or two counter staff. We deliberately booked with a Big International car hire company expecting a swifter efficient process, but instead we got something similiar to "Goldstar" in Mallorca Airport ( I did it once but never again). Having said that there appeared to be no quibble nabout minor scratches and scuffs upon pick-up and no forensic inspection on drop off at Vancouver. Prices seemed very high at a cost of £1,570 for 14 days for a so-called Mini Van. The costs included a one way charge for Calgary to Vancouver, but in fact the car originated from Vancouver and I was really just returning it ! The vehicle itself was perfect for our needs as with the 3rd row of seats folded it provided good seating for 4 and took a LOT of luggage. we could not have managed with an ordinary large car. No problems with the car itself, which had done 76,000 kms on pick-up, and we drove it a further 3,000Kms in 2 weeks. No GPS, but I had downloaded maps on to my phone and used a mapping and GPS system which didnt rely on an internet and therefore data connection. "

" We like Avis cars and service and use rental cars a lot owing to extensive travel. BUT, this is the second time we have rented a car from Avis at Calgary Airport when there has been absolute CHAOS. The queues were unreal and a couple hours long, we have never experienced such poor demand management anywhere in the world at car rental companies. They need to sort their service provision out to meet supply. The poor staff did their best and Patrick helped me get a car as quickly as possible as my mom was terminally ill, and did eventually pass, and I had a 3 hour journey to get to her from Calgary. If he hadn't have been so compassionate, I would not have got to my mom so quickly. I also chose extra cover for breakdown as we were travelling in low populated area and payment for a full tank of petrol. On contacting Avis I was eventually (after around a dozen emails) given a breakdown of the 'extras' which included an airport fee of $120. My Auto Europe Voucher states that this is already included in the rental. What I fail to understand is why the rental company would not look after their cars by including breakdown recovery. Why would this not be included? On a plus note, the car drop off was made very easy by the signage provided by Avis on where to specifically leave the car in the parking garage at 757 Hornby St, Vancouver "

The Avis garage supervisor was very helpful and sympathetic and took me back to the desk (where staff were still overwhelmed). I was asked to return the paperwork and key and they would try to find me a model close to what I booked. I was told to wait (along with several other customers who were equally frustrated at the service). About 30 mins later, they came up with a Toyota RAV4 which I took. Altogether one of the poorest ever rental collection experiences I've had. "

" 1, Midsized car wasn't available despite booking months ago. Given the option of a small car, which wouldn't fit our luggage in, or a truck which cost much more in fuel. Had to go for the truck, as the other option was not viable, which we estimated cost an extra £125 in fuel costs. 2, Ordered a booster seat, which I was quoted 100cad for when I booked initially on Auto Europe and again when I pre-checked in on Avis website. On arrival they attempted to charge 216cad. When I mentioned this, the manager insisted that I would not have been quoted 100cad. I have rechecked on Avis website and it is 100cad. It's frustrating that they would attempt to gain extra money in this way. It is also very frustrating that I had to ask the manager to stop shouting when he was telling me that I was incorrect about the price, 3, I decided to use the 'return with empty fuel' option. On the rental agreement sheet I was quoted 107.10cad for fuel, On returning the vehicle I have been charged 167.10cad instead. As the office was so busy, I was unable to sort this out before we had to catch our flight. Fortunately, following the booster seat problem, I had suspicions that this might happen and have kept all the receipts, so I can get my credit card company to get the money back if Avis don't sort it out. " We initially booked for a Dodge Charger (or similar) with Avis, and we received a confirmation of the booking over a week before, and then 48 hours before the pick up we received a phone call/mail from AEUK saying that Avis had cancelled our reservation. We had no other choice than to accept a booking with Thrifty for a Toyota Camry. AEUK claimed that the category was the same but a Dodge Charger at Thrifty is in a superior category so I consider being downgraded for the same cost. We had made that reservation with Avis because we knew that had Chargers since we rented one in May at the exact same agency. I was told to discuss this with the customer service of AutoEurope and not the reservation people, I'm still looking for their contact... "

Car was clean inside but outside had just been pressure washed with water leaving dead flies and bugs on the paintwork making checking for damage difficult. Boot shuts were lagged in dust and this is one of your first impressions as most people will have luggage. No screenwash, just water. Front brake discs were warped giving an unpleasant experience especially when braking downhill. I did inform the chap I returned the vehicle to but did not get the impression that anything was likely to be done about it. The cleanliness is not a massive issue as we hired a car to get us from A to B and that's what it did but you want feedback, you appear to want good feedback but you'll need to make a little more effort. Picking up a grubby car isn't a great feeling. "

I have since found out that Avis have debited my card by approximately 800 Canadian Dollars for some mysterious 'extra charges' when they told me it would be 400 Dollars which would then be returned into my account in the next few days. When we collected the car (Jet lagged after a 9 hour journey) we were dealt with by an Asian/Canadian lady with a difficult accent to understand, wearing a mask and talking behind a screen, who spoke very quickly and told us to sign and initial the form in 9 DIFFERENT PLACES !! She DID NOT tell us at any stage that we were agreeing to extra charges which would then amount to £250 !!!! or I would have politely told her NO THANKS. (My wife can verify this as she had to be summoned by me to help me try and decipher what she was saying.) I have since discovered that one of those 9 places we initialled (WHICH WAS ALREADY PRINTED OUT AS 'ACCEPTED' and consequently so very very easy to unwittingly agree to) refers to extra insurance cover that we did not request or require. Please restore my faith in Avis quickly by returning ALL the money taken from my card (not just the 400 CD) as this appears to me to be a well organised, probably not totally illigel, but nevertheless dispicable way of getting more money out of tired vulnerable customers by the Avis counter staff at Calgary airport "

It took them approx 90mins to connect my phone to the car in order to access a GPS app. The car was requested upon booking to have GPS. The car given had a Satellite Radio and uses a app 'carplay as my phone being a iPhone. Not wanting to use roaming with charges. The GPS route had to be set using WiFi, so if no WiFi could be found - No Map.... I asked for a different car and told none was available. I asked for a Dashtop GPS (Garmin/TomTom) as conventional. They could supply such a gps/satnav but with a charge of $16/day despite showing them my request of a car with GPS.. I have made comments within various media platforms advising others to use their own GPS where it appears becoming popular for cars not to have standard gps but via Android/iPhone using your phone apps. As said above it took 3 people approx 90mins to sort the issue of connection. Thanks "

On collection from Avis we were advised that the additional cover was not valid with Avis and should anything happen that is not covered by the additional cover (windows, towing, breakdown etc) then we would have to pay Avis. As a result of this, I had no other option other than to pay as no management were available to speak to and the desk staff were not willing to discuss this any further. being charged such a large amount of money over what was stated within the terms of conditions I had agreed to resulted in a trip of a lifetime being ruined as the extra money required for the car took away from other activities that had been budgeted for. " We were given a Hyundai car, however I was not happy with the road noise and took it back the following day as we were travelling some distance. As no cars of that class (intermediate) were available the lady offered us a full size car and kindly waved the additional fee for the week.
