Barcelona is the second largest Spanish city and one of the most visited European cities. It attracts over 7 million tourists per year. There is an estimated 1.6 million inhabitants alone in the urban areas, only overshadowed by Madrid. Barcelona has untold visitor attractions - so whether you're looking for a place to live, interesting museums, picturesque parks or impressive architecture, Barcelona has it all and so much more. It is therefore recommended to make enough time in your schedule to visit as much as possible.
Unfortunately, it would be beyond our scope to list everything that Barcelona has to offer - although, we do recommend the following locations. The Plaça de Catalunya is a traditional old square sited between the old town (Barri Gotic) and the new town (Eixample). It is considered by many to be the centre of Barcelona and from here; you are able to reach many other sights on foot, such as, ancient Roman ruins and the splendid shopping district of Passeig de Gràcia.
In addition, the Casa Milà and Casa Batlló by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí are nearby and ideal for a visit. Antoni Gaudí made his mark on Barcelona, but not more so, than with the unfinished Basilica Sagrada Família. The current completion date of this imposing structure is set for 2026 and hopefully it will be achieved.
La Rambla is known as one of the most famous streets in Barcelona and is constantly frequented by tourists. There's always something happening along this avenue which leads to Barcelona's harbour. Cafés, restaurants and entertaining musicians and acrobats fill the avenue and keep visitors happy - you will even find the Mercat de la Boqueria market, which is built out of steel and glass. Interesting works of art and exhibitions can be found in one of Barcelona's numerous museums. From Fundació Joan Miró, Museu Picasso to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, Barcelona cates to everyones tastes. For quiet moments away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Parc de la Ciutadella is the ideal location. It is also the home of Barcelona Zoo, in which you will find over 500 different animals to visit.
Let's not forget the lively festival scenes, where a variety of musicians attend and help to make Barcelona a must go to for music. Thanks to the cities ideal location on the Mediterranean coast, beautiful and popular beaches are never too far away. La Barceloneta, Platja del Bogatell and the Platja de Badalona are but a few must see beaches.
