    More information about Catania

Catania has a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. It is known to have the hottest summer temperatures in the whole of Italy. During winter the temperature never really goes below zero Celsius, although, due to its neighbouring Mount Etna, snow peaks form at its summit. Catania was founded by the Greeks around 730 BC. After a spell under Carthaginian rule, Catania came under Roman rule during the first Punic war. During the middle ages saw Catania come under many other rulers, from Byzantine to the Islamic Emirate of Sicily in 1072. In the 16th century, the city came under Spanish rule with constant rebellions. In 1669, Mount Etna erupted and caused major damage to the city, but luckily due to the city walls, the lava was diverted into the sea. Sicily and Catania were ultimately unified with mainland Italy in 1860 and despite the effects of the two world wars, Catania is now a major port and an important contributor to the Sicilian economy.

Catania has many suburbs to visit, each with their own characteristics and charms. With your campervan hire from Catania, you can easily explore these districts and beyond. Head on a Catania shore excursion and visit ancient monuments left over from its colourful past. If you’re looking for some sports, then consider a day’s quad biking, or bicycling through the mountain paths. Do some wine tasting in one of its many vineyards, or head to the Mount Etna summit and feel in awe of such a natural wonder.
