Ancona Train Station (often referred to as Ancona Centrale, or Stazione Ferroviaria di Ancona) is the main railway station for both the city and region of Marche as a whole. Owned by Italy's state-run Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), it caters for regular long-distance, high-speed, intercity and regional services throughout the day, with additional links to and from the major Italian cities of Rome and Milan.
Housed in an impressive building, the station covers two floors, with the first floor housing the station’s various passenger facilities. Severely damaged during World War II, the original structure dates from 1861 when the line between Bologna and Ancona was completed. Located a short walk from the city centre, it is one of six stations in the city, along with Ancona Marittima, Ancona Torrette, Ancona Stadio, Palombina and Varano.
Crowned by the city's cathedral sitting on top of a hill, Ancona is a thriving tourist destination and the bustling capital of Italy's enchanting Le Marche region. Greek settlers founded Ancona, after which the Romans established a firm base with many monuments remaining from that period, most notably the amphitheatre and Trajan's Arch in the heart of the port district. The city's top cultural attraction is the National Archeological Museum which covers everything from the Paleolithic era to the Early Middle Ages.
With its prime location beside the Adriatic Sea, it's a city that is best explored on four wheels due to the many day-trip options available. With a car hire from Ancona Train Station you can combine a fun-filled city sightseeing programme with a series of journeys both into the interior and along its long sandy Mediterranean coastline. Other possibilities include a visit to the tiny microstate of San Marino and or lunch in the Italian city of Perugia a 2-hour drive away.

The station was opened on the 17th of November 1861 upon completion of the railway line from Bologna. The original structure (built in a similar style to Bologna Train Station) was badly damaged during World War II and largely rebuilt a few years later.
Most of the companies offering car rental at Ancona Train Station have their offices either right next to the station or in the streets surrounding the building. Please don't forget to have everything ready when you arrive to collect your vehicle, including your driving licence, passport, voucher and car hire coverage details, in order to speed up the pick-up process.

Clean and compact, Ancona Train Station is easy to navigate and has many on-site passenger facilities, including parking. The main building consists of two floors, with the upper floor mostly used as office space by Trenitalia, the Italian state railway company. Located on Piazza Rosselli, a short walk from the city centre and close to the port, it has cafés, snack bars, a newsagent and shops plus ATMs and electronic ticket machines. The station is also situated in a busy commercial area where many other shops, restaurants, bars and cafés can be found a short walk away. The station is the city's main transport hub with long-dstance and local buses departing from a station nearby and a shuttle to and from the port district.
Conveniently positioned between the port and the city centre, travellers who rent a car from Ancona Train Station can quickly be on their way and maximise their time in the lovely Marche region of eastern Italy. There's a direct railway service from the train station of Ancona Airport that connects with Ancona's central station (the journey takes 20 minutes), which is linked to cities all over the country. Passengers with time on their hands can find some of Ancona's top tourist attractions close by, such as Sacra Famiglia Church situated just 500 metres to the east and the city's ancient Porta Pia about a kilometre to the north-east of the station. Loggia dei Mercanti (another very historical place) is also within easy reach Ancona Train Station by foot.
In Ancona you can park if there are painted lines; ie spaces marked with yellow lines means that they are reserved for those who need them; white lines means that you can parking for free (although there may be a time limit) and blue lines means that it is a paid parking area where ticket machines can be found close by. In this case you need to buy the ticket for the amount of time you want to park and display it on your dashboard (if there is a time limit for free parking, you'll see a street sign indicated this). One good option close to the station is Garage Fortuna, which is conveniently situated right in the centre of Ancona, just in front of the station entrance. Thanks to its strategic location and reasonable prices, it is very suitable for visitors who choose to book a car hire at Ancona Train Station and park it there for a period of time to visit the main attractions. The area around the station is also very well served by public transport and easily accessible to other parts of the city and beyond.
