Car hire in Ancona – Gateway to Eastern Italy

    Car hire in Ancona

The largest city in the stunning Le Marche region of Italy, Ancona is a city with a very long history (over 2,400 years of it, to be precise) that offers its visitors a truly Italian experience. A traditional port town from days gone by, it boasts an idyllic location some 280 kilometres (170 miles) north-east of Rome on the country's beautiful Adriatic coast. Its architecture and many cultural attractions proudly demonstrate the heritage of this old Italian city which in recent years has emerged as a popular gateway to its enchanting surrounding areas.

From lovely Renaissance towns to bright white Caribbean-style beaches, the verdant countryside around Ancona is prime terrain for an exhilarating road-trip and/or a series of day trips out of the city. Nestling between the mountain slopes of Monte Conero and Monte Astagno, the whole region affords glorious vistas at every turn on coast roads extending all the way up the Adriatic coast to Pesaro, a charming fishing town situated close to the independent microstate of San Marino. Heading south with your car hire in Ancona will take you to Pescara, a city renowned for its fine cuisine and fabulous beaches.

Founded by Syracusan colonists around 390 BC, Ancona was taken by Rome in 2 BC and subsequently developed into a flourishing port. It was particularly favoured by the Roman emperor Trajan, whose marble archway still dominates the harbour today. Ancona has been a preferred entry and exit point for travellers into the area since the ancient Greeks, and today its international airport (named after the master painter, painter Raphael) is attracting more and more airlines operating a growing number of flights to and from destinations far and wide, most notably London, Paris, Munich, Dusseldorf and Brussels.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Ancona?

Yes. It's important to make sure than when you rent a car in Ancona and arrive to collect your vehicle, the main driver needs to present a valid credit card (such as Visa, Mastercard, Diners or American Express) in their name with enough funds to cover the deposit. This is because the local supplier will want to hold an amount on the card (known as an excess) which is duly refunded once the vehicle has been returned in the same conditiion in which it left the pick-up point.

Some drivers are surprised to discover that their debit card is refused when they check in at the pick-up point, which is why it is so important to have a major credit card with you in the driver’s name with enough credit to cover the excess to avoid disappointment. When hiring a vehicle in the luxury category, the supplier may ask for two credit cards (both in the main driver's name) due to the high value of such vehicles and as a measure of additional security.

All the necessary details regarding credit cards are easily accessible by making a quick search in the Auto Europe booking engine. Just select your dates, supplier and car category and click on the blue and white info icon (i) and all the relevant credit car information will pop up. For more information, please read the blog post about the six most important things to know about credit cards and deposits. More advice can be found on our page explaining why credit cards are so important for hiring a car.

What insurance do I need for my car rental in Ancona?

Whenever you book a car hire in Ancona on the Auto Europe website, you'll find that all our rates automatically include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), theft protection, fire insurance and third-party liability at no extra cost. CDW does not cover damage to every oart of the vehicle, so it's always best to purchase our Full Damage & Theft Protection package for total peace of mind when on the road.

Please be aware of the fact that some car rental employees are motivated to earn extra commission by attempting to sell their company's products and services on top of the ones you have already purchased. Coverage is often mentioned when customers arrive to pick up their vehicle, but these additional coverage policies are totally optional and normally surplus to requirements. It's easy to find out the details of what exactly is included in the car hire rate simply by clicking on the blue and white info icon (i) after making a search in the Auto Europe booking engine. For more information about our excellent coverage policies, please call our rental specialists on +44 123 3225 114 and they will be happy to give you all the help you need for your forthcoming trip to the Marche region. Please take a look at dedicated page on the subject which provides a general overview of the types of car hire coverage available.

How is the traffic in Ancona?

Driving your car hire in Ancona is not difficult compared with other larger Italian cities like Rome and Milan, but like any other port city it gets busier during the high season when more people are travelling through. The main roads that connect Ancona with other cities are generally in good condition but you need to keep an eye out for potholes. Ancona doesn’t suffer from the kind of rush-hour traffic that you find in larger places, although you can expect a mild build-up and some congestion during the mornng and evening rush-hours, particularly around 8am and 5pm when people are commuting to and from work. Traffic sometimes builds at the city's main intersections, most notably along Banchina Nazario Sauro (where many of the most popular restaurants are located) and the Via Flaminia. Ancona is small and quite compact with much of the night-life and social activity centred around the harbour, which is split between leisure and commerce, so there are many pedestrians around for most of the day and well into the evening. The city also has a large university, which adds to the amount of cars on the road during term time. Always remember to drive your car hire in Ancona on the right-side of the road and for more information about driving in Italy, please visit our Italy Driving Guide.

Where can I park my car hire in Ancona?

Parking on the streets is categorized with lines marking the parking spots and there are three kinds of parking. If the spaces are marked with yellow lines, they're reserved for special categories, such as policemen or doctors. If they're marked by white lines, parking is free, although a time limit may exist. A good recommendation is Parque de Pesados on Via Einaudi Luigi where plenty of free spaces normally exist. Another popular option is Stamira less than 5 minutes by foot from the city centre. If they're marked by blue lines, you need to pay for the parking and there will be a ticket dispenser in the vicinity. You will need to buy a ticket for the amount of time you want to stay, and display it on your dashboard. Many of the parking spaces at Ancona Airport are located within walking distance of the main passenger terminal in the short-term (sosta breve) car park, as well as the cheaper long-term (sosta lunga) car park.

Can I drive my car hire in the ZTL-zone in Ancona?

No. To allow for more effective preservation of Ancona's beautiful historic centre, an electronic access control system is now active at all times of the day in what is known as the city's ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato), which translates as Limited Traffic Zone. In effect, the system detects violations committed by those who enter the restricted area illegally without the need for the presence of the traffic policemen and women. Access to Ancona's ZTL in the city centre is currently monitored by two cameras located at the intersections of via Leopardi with piazza Saffi, via Pisacane with via Marchetti, via Pisacane with via Maierini and via F.lli Bandiera with via Armellini.
