Atlanta DeKalb Peachtree Airport first began operating as part of Camp Gordon, a World War I training camp and later during World War II as as a naval air station Atlanta. It it was converted for civilian purposes in the 1950s before being transformed into a full-scale airport for commercial aviation in order to cater for the overflow of traffic into and out of Atlanta's fast-growing Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Situated at an elevation of 1,003 feet (306 metres) above sea level, PDK today covers a total area of 745 acres (301 hectares) and has three runways.
